Gordon Brown has praised Jade Goody's "determination" to provide for her family.

Sky News

18th February 2009

Speaking at his monthly news conference at Downing Street, the Prime Minister expressed his sympathy for the terminally ill reality star.

"It's very sad and indeed tragic that someone so young has got this deadly disease... and it's very sad indeed that the treatment that has been given has not been successful," he told reporters.

However, Brown praised Goody's "determination to help her family" by selling the rights to her wedding, adding: "[it] is something that we've got to applaud."

Jade, 27, has confirmed that she will marry her boyfriend Jack Tweed at Down Hall in Hertfordshire on Sunday.

OK! has paid £700,000 for the exclusive images of the ceremony, while Living TV has reportedly pledged £100,000 for the rights to broadcast the event on TV.

Do you agree with Gordon Brown is right to comment on pop culture like former Big Brother contestants & X Factor or do you think Gordon Brown is a "insert Jeremy Clarkson quote" who should concentrate on running the country (badly)?

He's just offering his condolences I guess.

If he makes comments such as "I'm so happy blah won X-Factor" then he should seriously get back to work instead of watching TV :)

He did with Alexandra Burke.

Pathetic of Gordon wasting his time with this and pathetic of the "journo" from The Sun asking him in the first place, The Sun seems to think no one bar Jade has cancer in this country

If Gordon wants to talk about cancer let him talk about sorting the postcode lottery for cancer drugs on the NHS and what he proposes to do about it instead of waffling on about a Z List "celeb"

i think in her position she is right to be publically open about her plight, so brown praising her is really nothing, it means nothing.

clinics have been inundated with requests for smears from young women ever since her plight was made public..... GOOD.

after a succession of Tory PMs hopelessly out of touch with the public... I think it's refreshing to have a Primie Minister who makes a comment on what a large percentage of the British public are talking about...and, like her or not, Jade Goody is being discussed everywhere right now.

It seems Brown really can't win - say nothing and he's another ivory-tower politician... say something and he should be getting back to work

Yeah but surely him talking about Jade's cancer and calling her courageous or whatever is disrespectful to everyone else in this country that has cancer bar her ? its like saying "your cancer is not important as Jade Goody's"

If I was a cancer sufferer or the relative of someone with cancer right now I would find the fact he can talk about her but not make reference to the courage of every cancer sufferer in the UK a big insult

Sure it is sad what she is going through but it is for EVERYONE with cancer

I totally agree with you.

Especially since becoming Prime Minister over the past two years he has cut back the expenditure on Cancer Research and cancer care that Tony Blair's Labour Government was paying out for.

Therefore, it all leaves a rather nasty taste in the mouth for everyone who has a loved one suffering from or is carering for someone with this terrible disease who has not got on TV and made racist comments towards someone of Asian origin or is making £700,000 thanks to the PR machine of Max Clifford (a future thread about whom I will unleash after Jade Goody passes away).

one of your greatest assets is the way you see the real problem and drop all previous distastes to address it. you hate brown, or have given that strong impression.... you dont like jade goody, but you have not let those prejudical thoughts get in the way of the real issue.

spot on, brown couldnt win. spot on jade IS being talked about.

but the HUGE flaw in your post is pretty gobsmacking....

NOT EVERYONE WITH CANCER IS IN THE PUBLIC EYE.

jade is, therefore of course she will come to the attention of the pm!

and i totally disagree, surely cancer patients will be happy that this pernicious disease will be getting more publicity with significantly more young women going for smears as a consequence and generally raising cancer awareness in the public eye.... sorry but if i had cancer i WOULDNT be jealous of the pm picking out jade goody for special favour...id have much weightier problems on my mind!

oh yeah... she called shilpa 'shilpa popadom' ..... very racist innit! <_<

what a load of bollox that was.

The fact that more young women being screened is of course a good thing but that is a pleasant side effect of the whole thing, Jade is doing this for Jade she is not some crusader who is campaigning for cancer screenings she is a mercenary out to line her own pockets and if others get screened due to this then all the well and good but Jade is doing this publicity for her own wallet, she is no Jane Tomlinson

But instead of soundbites from Brown if he wants a tribute to Jade he should put more government money into cancer research, more government money into national screening programs, end the Postcode Lottery that denies working class cancer sufferers proper access to the best drugs, that is the sort of thing Brown should be doing not worthless soundbites in press conferences, Brown has CUT government money towards cancer I read recently

Jade is going to die, nothing can save her now but Brown should be focusing on the future Jade's and not having her die in vain by increasing what the government does for cancer

Spot on Craig.... Brown's proclamations are weasel words when you look at the facts... He's hoping we'll all just forget about the FACT that there is a post-code lottery as far as cancer treatements go for thousands of patients who dont have the good fortune to be Jade Goody and have a press campaign following them around, or indeed afford the best private medical care in the country.... Brown is an utterly sychophantic, opportunist piece of sh!t who is insulting the thousands of ordinary cancer sufferers who are in this position.... Put your money where your mouth is Gordy, end the Post Code Lottery, give people the cancer drugs they NEED, stop making excuses or issuing soundbites in an attempt to ingratiate yourself on the public, we see through you mate..... <_< Frankly, Russ, Rob, I'm amazed that you cant see through this for what it is, I'm beginning to wonder if Crazy Chris has hijacked both your accounts tbh....

And, indeed, you are correct in your assessment of Jade, she is NOT some crusader out there pushing for awareness, she's not setting up a charitable foundation like Caron Keating and her mother Gloria Hunniford did, her motives are purely mercenary; the fact that so many women are making appointments to have smear tests is obviously a good thing, but it's not happening because Jade is this martyr or crusader for enlightenment or cancer awareness, it's happening rather despite of her attention-seeking actions (yeah, I mean, setting up a bloody Media wedding with Elton sodding John is really spreading awareness of cancer innit.....?). Neither is she Michael J Fox - a real hero who took on the might of the US right wing political establishment to be an advocate for Stem Cell research when he found that he was suffering from Parkinsons, now THAT was courage and showed real grit and determination, a star using his fame for a truly useful and admirable cause.....

Jade fukkin' Goody is too STUPID and too fukkin' SELFISH to take a stand for the rights of cancer patients to get the treatments they deserve..... She could use her fame and the fact that the press is focussed on her to the same effect that Fox did, she isn't and I have nothing but contempt for her lack of action on this very important issue, nahh, she just wants some bloody Max Clifford-endorsed, puke-inducing MEEEEDJAAAHHHHHHHH wedding to some fukkin' lowlife who'll probably rob her kids blind once she's dead..... <_<

Anyone notice the common link between Jade Goody and Alfie & Chantelle....? Max Clifford....... Never let it be said that this fukkin' parasite didn't pass up an opportunity to exploit and manipulate events to make money for himself...... C/unt.....<_<

I look forward to Richard's Max Clifford thread......

of course im in agreement with you two on the post code lottery and governments cancer cut backs... but thats slightly a different subject.

jades life has been all about shamelessly making money for doing nothing. as long as idiots 'follow' her type she will carry on making money... frankly i dont blame her, the blame lies squarely at the feet of her band of followers, they have made her who she is, max clifford was merely the orchestrator .... without an audience she/he would be nothing.

Jack Straw climbs aboard the Jade Goody bandwagon

Telegraph.co.uk

David Hughes Feb 20, 2009 at 16:09:25

Jack Straw didn't get where he is today by politely declining a seat on a passing bandwagon. Today the Justice Department announced that Straw has adjusted the curfew restrictions on Jade Goody's fiancé Jack Tweed to allow the couple to celebrate their nuptials properly.

To call this a cheap political stunt would be too generous. Here we have one of the most senior Ministers of the Crown playing a walk-on part in one of publicist Max Clifford's tasteless schemes.

Goody is sick with cancer, which is sad, but then so are hundreds of thousands of others. The difference here is that Goody is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the red tops and everything she does, including dying of cancer, is commodified for the tabloids. While her desire to make as much money as possible for her young children may be admirable, why does the Government feel obliged to get involved?

Ministers seem to cleave to the pitiful notion that by associating themselves with tabloid obsessions, they somehow seem "closer to the people" or more attuned to popular culture.

It was this sentiment that led to the toe-curling spectacle of the Prime Minister of the day (one T.Blair) backing a Sun campaign to have a Coronation Street character freed from prison.

Just a bit of fun, say the polticians. Really? That may be the case over a soap plotline but there is nothing funny about the Goody affair. What sort of precedent does Straw think he's setting? Will he intervene to oblige every other prisoner who is marrying a dying cancer victim? Or does his mercy only extend to those whose story has been sold to the highest bidder?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Indeed I'm sure the 16 year old boy who was attacked by a golf club by Jack Tweed must be thrilled for them, as must other cancer victims and families of up and down the land, many of whom have worked for 47 years paying taxes towards the state, before suffering this truly awful disease to a terminal demise who have not been supported by the state in their hour of need.

I think Brown & Straw are just after some good publicity, to try and deflect people away from the constant bad headlines about the economy and expenses rows(Home secretary).

I am very uncomfortable with all the tabloids bending over backwards, fawning over her with money offers, some of these papers were the same ones that critized her after CBB row. They are only doing it because they will coin it in with Joe Public who will buy the papers & magazines in their millions. Surely we are all hypocrites.

You get the stars we deserve, a chav star for a chav nation. <_<

oh yeah... she called shilpa 'shilpa popadom' .....

Yeah, and the rest mate, the bullying, the harrassment, the threats..... And not just to Shilpa..... You seem to forget that Jade is a seriously nasty piece of work with a mouth on her to shame a fukkin' navvie, or even Chris Moyles, yeah, get terminal fukkin' cancer and all is forgiven eh.....? Bollocks, a nasty piece of work is a nasty piece of work, cancer or no cancer, I wont feel sorry for Jade any more than I did for Ronnie Reagan when he got Alzheimers, or indeed for "Lady" Thatcher who I also believe is suffering from Alzheimers.... I didn't kiss this vile bitch's arse when she was healthy, I will NOT be a hypocrite and start kissing it now.....

Jade and her whols conduct and character makes her an extremely vile person and I fully agree with what you say but part of me also thinks she was a little bit hard done by with the CBB stuff

Danielle Lloyd and Jo O Meara or whatever her name is that ex S Club bint said stuff that was just as bad if not worse than Jade yet Jade was public enemy #1 and the Danielle and Jo got off scot free to resume their careers, Jade was out of order but she has an IQ of about 7 whereas Jo and Danielle are more intelligent than Jade so I think they should have got worse treatment from the public than they did, I think it was a bit unfair for Jade to be the bogeywoman while those 2 got away with it

jack straw was right to allow the curfew to be lifted for his fiancee, but i hope he would also do the same for anyone in that horrible situation
