After the success story that was breakaway, Which to date has sold over 13 million copies, Kelly Clarkson's career took a slight detour withe her third album, My December. Earlier this year Kelly returned to the top of the charts with the more mainstream single "My Life Would Suck Without You", A hint that her upcoming fourth CD, All I Ever Wanted, would win back fans alienated by her previous album.

 

How do you feel about the way MD was received?

Well, it was critically acclaimed - probably more so than any of my other albums, and it sold over two million copies world wide, so i was pretty proud of it.

Didn't you have arguments with your record company about it?

No. I'm not a very controversial person, so people will and try to make me that way. yes, obviously labels and artists have different ideas and opinions on what to do, but the last CD was nothing compared to what happened with my first. No one knew what to do with me- except for me. But people who have worked with me understand me. We've never had a huge issue and nothing that isn't normal for every other artist. I think people just grabbed on to [the rumors of fighting] and ran with it. I'm far too lazy to even be that person

There's a lot of buzz around the track "I Do Not Hook Up"

Yeah, I love that song. That's probably going to be my next single and Katy Perry and Kara DioGuardi - who I've worked with on three of my albums now - co-wrote it. I'm a big fan of Katy's and she didn't get to use it for her album, so when it came down the pipeline, I asked whether i could record it. I love the message: you like to have fun, but you're not a ho!

 

Is there a theme to the album?

Variety - that's my big thing. It's actually my goal with every album to make sure it's different from previous one and I'm always trying to push the envelope. Who wants to here the same song 12 times on an album? No one!

 

There have been a lot of winners of American Idol since you - any advice for recent or future winners?

Not [only] for people on idol, but people in general in this business -just do what makes you happy. Sing and write or pick song that make you happy, because it's your face and it's your life and you're going to be singing thoe songs forever.

Whats on your iPod at the moment?

I like The All-American Reject's new CD, and I love the Twilight soundtrack, Muse and Linkin Park.

 

You've been to Australia a few times what stands out for you?

I've always said its like a giant Texas to me. I love the people. if i lived anywhere else in the world, it would be Australia. I think its perfect. My favorite experience was when we went to Manly. They said from Sydney you could take a ferry to manly, so i figured it was Manly Island. Then, in the middle of a concert, i was like, "Yeah, we just went to Manly Island!" Everyone went quit and I was like "What?" and everybody was like "It's not an island." I was in front on an entire audience and they're like, "You don't know what the hell you're talking about!"

Do you have a favorite travel destination?

Hayman Island, whooo! I love Australian islands.

Do you sometimes miss anonymity?

I'm not a fan of the spotlight. I do like it in the sense that you make a difference and do some really positive things. I'm big into helping animals and I also support the baby charity March of Dimes. It's cool that you can throw your name around for those kind of causes.

Where's the strangest place you've been recognized?

I've been in a bathroom stall and somebody knocks on it and slid a piece of paper under the door. She said, "Oh my god, I'm your biggest fan!" I'm literally peeing! That was probably the most awkward thing.

 

What do you think about people who are famous for the sake of it?

I don't understand people like that. Why would you want to do it? I'm obviously a different personality. My favorite parts of this life are getting to do the music or touring. I love being on stage - it just brings out the better part of me.
