Pop Idol winner Will Young has shown himself worthy of more than the 15 minutes of fame grabbed by other reality TV winners. Now he's been given the SBS stamp of approval. As well as a flourishing musical career he also made a creditable Nicky Lancaster in a stage revival of Noel Cowards The Vortex. But, as he says here, "I feel at my happiest when I sing."

Well, I have to make a confession. I've quite fallen

in love with Will Young. Which has come as a surprise not

only to my wife but to me, too, for I'd always dismissed

the Pop Idol winner as so much reality TV fluff, a reedy

voice with a weedy personality to match. Yet now I've had

to change my tune, as the South Bank Show profile reveals

a consummate performer.

 

Young won't change your life, but he's solidly professional

in the blue-eyed soul tradition of Mick Hucknell or Hall and

Oates. He also proves to be an engagingly elusive persona.

Film-maker Matt Cain followed the singer for a year,

through rehearsals, tours and his 30th birthday, and his

reward is he gets to peel back the layers of a man who

manages to conceal his true personality beneath intelligent,

articulate exterior. We see how Young's coy caution is

swapped for the impassioned joy of performance.

"I feel at my happiest when I sing," he explains.

"When you've got a microphone it feels completely right."

Between the music, Young's playful chat gives us the

lowdown of the sudden fame of Pop Idol, the trials of

coming out in the public eye and his stiletto-sharp

thoughts on Louis Walsh. The doe-eyed boy of 2002

has become a man, set for far more than the 15 minutes.

Long may he continue to grow: Will and I may be in for

a long haul.

Long to know what didn't get saved. It would be nice to see some of the edited stuff on O/S. 90 hours down to 45 minutes!!!! How sad he had no support the day after he came out - had to face the press all alone :cry:

Are you talking about "sky"? If so, did they say anything worse than calling Will false? In my opinion, the reaction to that by one Devoted member, i.e. asking them to "p*** off" was worse. And others joined in, agreeing with her. No wonder "sky" was rather hurt, I would be, too. So he overreacted in response saying that silly thing about him knowing more bla bla...

 

OK, I didn't see the whole programme, so my opinion is purely based on the 3 clips that were available on the itv website. Just from those, I can see where "sky" is coming from. However, I wouldn't go so far as to call Will "false", but he's guarded and has a certain facade firmly in place - pretty much like that reviewer said:

None of us know Will and we never will "get to know" him, not even if he went on Big Brother. He's a private person and wants to remain that way. Fair dos. Obviously, this "sky" person expected/hoped for something more and was disappointed. I know I won't be, as I expect him to be guarded, but with just enough openness and honesty to keep us interested. :D

Absolutely. I said this to Sky but got no response just another post "False". If this person knows him as well as they claim why would they expect to see William Robert on the tv. The programme was about Will Young the performer. He's always been two entities - it's his way of preserving his privacy and sanity.

I'm sorry, if people don't read and understand how the SBS was advertised then that's their bloody problem if they're disappointed.

 

It was stated from the beginning that the documentary was following Will as he promoted his album and we got some back stage footage from that. No where was it even hinted that that Will would be on a shrinks couch and we'd all end up knowing everything there was to know About Will's private life.

 

And Toni, if you'd perhaps taken the time to look at that poster's history, then you'd know why she got jumped on like she did. If it wasn't Amanda, then it was someone who is a copy cat pest and there's no reason why any of us should give them any benefit of the doubt, their history has already condemned them.

Marguerite - I still don't understand why people overreacted so strongly. And I did look at the person's posting history. No, they're not your typical gushing, love-everything-about-Will person. and we do have A LOT of people like that on D, plus the more analytical ones, the worriers (I'm often one of those), the ones who subtly domineer the site (yes, it's "ruled" by a few, it's just like that, can't be helped, it's true for most sites I've been a member off) etc. This "sky" had a mixture of opinions in the past, some good, some not so good. If this person has now been banned, I think the person who told them to "p*** off" should perhaps be given a warning for real rudeness.

I did not watch until 1am but my i loved it..he seemed really hurt by what LW said, loved the concert footage brought back memories of having such a great time :wub:

I think you'll find that the person who was banned from this site had got away with having different user names for a very long time before she was sussed. Likewise, the same happened on Devoted, just one incident gives them away and that could be a long time coming.

Amanda is definetly a girl she uses the same terminology and her posts were almost identical to someone who had multiple identities on here DS /Haven and D until they were found out :lol:

So has *Amanda* been banned from DS? I think she "sounds" like a woman - or maybe a very bitchy gay guy. And did "she" really admit to being Pumpkin? Because if she/h is/was that person, too, she/he seems to have gone off Ronan as well, or is pretending to be (according to some old *Amanda* posts on DS), just so as to disguise. Some people... :blink:
