Posted June 17, 200619 yr http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/7b/Cache_Haneke.jpg Hidden (Caché) is released on Monday probably not in features!! but hell what a film!!! Interactive Features: Interactive Menus, Scene Selection, Theatrical Trailer, Making Of Feature, Filmography, Featurette Review: Writer/director Michael Haneke delivers a masterpiece of unsettlement with Hidden (Cache). Life seems perfect for Georges (Daniel Auteuil) and Anne (Juliette Binoche), a bourgeois Parisian couple who live in a comfortable home with their adolescent son, Pierrot (Lester Makedonsky). But when an anonymous videotape turns up on their doorstep, showing their house under surveillance from across the street, their calm life begins to spiral out of control. Subsequent videotapes arrive, accompanied by mysterious drawings, and gradually Georges becomes convinced that he's being tormented by a figure from his past. But when he confronts him, the man assures Georges he is innocent. A growing sense of guilt begins to rise in Georges as he recalls his less-than-angelic childhood, yet for some reason he's unable to be completely honest with Anne. Soon, their happy home is an emotional battleground, leading to a climax that is breathtaking in its ferocity and ambiguousness. Though Haneke's film works first and foremost as an insidious thriller, it is also a powerful commentary on the urban paranoia and racism that continue to permeate modern society. Without using a score, and keeping his camera detached and static, Haneke nonetheless establishes a nearly unbearable level of tension. Not for the squeamish, Hidden remains a work of menacing brilliance, and was the winner of the Best Director award at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival. June 20, 200619 yr A seriously good film. I saw it at the cinema and was seriously shocked by the finale...... Haneke's really good at that sort of stuff though. Have you seen the incredibly disturbing "Funny Games"?
June 20, 200619 yr Author A seriously good film. I saw it at the cinema and was seriously shocked by the finale...... Haneke's really good at that sort of stuff though. Have you seen the incredibly disturbing "Funny Games"? no not yet. I've got the Piano Teacher on my disc drive (its about 2 mins to big to put on a disc   ) to watch at some point.
June 21, 200619 yr Oh dear lord. A movie this bad only occurs once every couple of years. NOTHING WAS TIED UP!!! NOTHING WAS EXPLAINED PROPERLY!! I GOT ABSOLUTELY NOTHING OUT OF THE FILME EXCEPT A SLIGHT SHOCK OF WHAT MAJJID DID IN THE FINALE.....boy it sucked
June 22, 200619 yr Oh dear lord. A movie this bad only occurs once every couple of years. NOTHING WAS TIED UP!!! NOTHING WAS EXPLAINED PROPERLY!! I GOT ABSOLUTELY NOTHING OUT OF THE FILME EXCEPT A SLIGHT SHOCK OF WHAT MAJJID DID IN THE FINALE.....boy it sucked Geez, talk about totally missing the point dude.... The fact that nothing was actually resolved was the whole point, it pretty much says a lot about the French nation itself and its inability to solve the problems of race within its society..... France has never resolved or come to terms with its colonial past, it has never come to terms with the terrible incident that happened at the Seine (which the film makes allusions to) in which hundreds of Algerians were drowned by French racists. The fact that Daniel Auteil's character just forgets what's happened and goes to sleep at the end of the film is a comment on how France itself is sleeping and has never reconciled or really dealt with its past. It's an incredibly powerful ending.... AND YOU JUST TOTALLY MISSED IT!!! I'd've thought it was pretty obvious seeing as how the film was made pretty much at the time when there were mass riots going on in France....  Sorry, but I just cant believe that you didn't get the point....
June 22, 200619 yr Author Geez, talk about totally missing the point dude.... The fact that nothing was actually resolved was the whole point, it pretty much says a lot about the French nation itself and its inability to solve the problems of race within its society..... yeah why would you want everything resolved? isnt great art supposed to be ambigious? i think about this film most days, one that def sticks in you mind. and one that will have people discussing for years to come. maybe if you didnt like it you need to see Imagine Me and You?
June 22, 200619 yr yeah why would you want everything resolved? isnt great art supposed to be ambigious? Absolutely. It's an open ending, incredibly interpretive and relies upon viewers to actually think and provoke debate not spoon-feed an audience with ludicrous "Happy, Happy Feel Good" Hollywood ending all tied up in a neat little bow. Because, the problems in French society that Haneke's film alludes to and brings up cannot be resolved in an easy way, as the riots last year in Paris proved.... If Haneke had come up with some pat Hollywood ending it would've been just plain dishonest....
June 22, 200619 yr I was getting excited about seeing this after reading the first message - but I know the ending now, guys :o

June 22, 200619 yr This is such an amazing film. It ended and I sorta felt let down that nothing was resolved - but then I couldn't stop talking about it and realised that was the point. It's so thought provoking. I can understand that people won't get - if they don't understand the race issues in France - but I think it has so much to offer than that. I found incredibly tense and so shocking (in one place ;) ).

I don't think it really takes a genius to be honest to understand what's been going on in France, it just takes an awareness of news and current affairs. I'm not French and Michael Haneke (the director and writer) is German. "Hidden" also deals with the hypocrisies and complacencies of the middle classes and the things that lie underneath seemingly "polite society". His German language films are really good as well, especially "Funny Games", which is truly disturbing stuff....

Yay, i know let's play a fun game and look down on people because we think they didn't get the film. I got the film and still hated it with a passion. I'm not opposed to ambiguous endings, i just didn't like this one and as i originally said, i got nothing out of this film at all, except the feeling to slash my own throat after 20 minutes of shots with just people going about their daily lives and i know that's meant to have some interpretation of the social/political climate in France, but frankly i don't think it makes for good cinema. I can see i'm out numbered here and anything i say about my opinion is going to be scoffed at (as already seen with what you've already said). Anywayz, i've had my 2 cents on the film, now i'll leave you all alone to stroke each others superiority complexes. Edited June 22, 200619 yr by eliott256

Well, if you really did understand all that mate (and frankly I dont reckon you did, you just looked at mine and Tiger's posts and are faking some attempt at understanding...) then you should have gotten something out of it.... A film that is thought-provoking and sparks debate isn't good cinema?? Rubbish. You clearly have no clue what good cinema actually is in that case, because films like "Hidden" are everything good cinema is about.... But hey, off you pop to the next 'by-the-numbers' Hollywood blockbuster that is all style over substance.... -_-
June 22, 200619 yr would it be rude to suggest that a Kelly Clarkson fan probably wouldn't have the depth or intelligence to 'get' high art cinema?
June 22, 200619 yr would it be rude to suggest that a Kelly Clarkson fan probably wouldn't have the depth or intelligence to 'get' high art cinema? Now, now Russ, we'll have none of that here.....

I do understand the film, granted it took a little bit of help from your responses, but i'm still less then satisfied with it. And when i meant it didn't make for good cinema, i meant watching the tapes with them, hence the watching people go about their lives for 20 minutes. I'm all for thought provoking films and this one obviously worked on both of us in different ways because we're debating it now. If you knew anything about my taste in films, which you don't, it's true i like some of the blockbusters, but i tend to favour limited releases/indie films, so hold back on the snap judgements yea? June 22, 200619 yr Please refrain from calling mate, i'm not and never shall be your "mate". OOOh, get her... :smoke: Sod you then. I was actually trying to be polite. I even told Russ to restrain himself.... Obviously trying to be a bit civil doesn't work on some people....

Obviously trying to be a bit civil doesn't work on some people.... Lol, just before you posted i deleted it realising it was a tad bitchy. No one has to restrain themselves, we all have our opinions, which is what makes us interesting. PS i hardly see how implying im an idiot is polite or civil
