March 7, 200916 yr Yan's German Chart Comments - Issue Date 6.03 Yes, finally, James Morrison, one of the most surprising number ones in Germany, has been kicked off the top after spending five weeks there. The new week sees German band Silbermond and the pilot single of their latest LP attacking quite successfully the number one position. That's by the way the first time the group manages to have a big hit with a first single taken from an album. Surprisingly or not, the biggest songs from Silbermond's previous two albums were the third singles from "Verschwende deine Zeit" and "Laut gedacht". I'm speaking of course for "Symphonie" and "Das Beste" - two minor German classics. Now after the number one "Das Beste", Silbermond are much more famous and it has been expected that a great song like "Irgendwas bleibt" will be massive :cheer:. A place below Silbermond comes in the second single from current chart sensation Lady Gaga. Debut single "Just Dance" was a considerable hit in Germany last year, lingering outside the top 10 for months and now even living a second life (this week - #20) following its late, but quite successful release, in the UK. So, having in mind these facts, no surprises for follow-up "Poker Face" charting so high in the German charts. The top three is rounded up by Razorlight, who continue to rise for a third consecutive week. One more new entry in the top ten this week at #9, where legendary German rock band Die Toten Hosen enters with its latest offering. As the video includes coverage of the band's tour, it comes on time after the winning of the Echo for the Best Live Act of 2008. As the new chart includes data from the 2009 carnival period, a lot of carnival-themed songs soar or re-enter the countdown. Once again the leader is Tim Toupet, who achieves his highest ever peak position at #6, while the best party song of them all - Hoehner's "Viva Colonia" charts once again in the top 40. Speaking of more serious music, at #19 we find the rather miserable new entry of U2's latest single "Get on Your Boots". Though the song is not bad, I think that something is missing this time around. U2 have had more successful hits in Germany so far, albeit never making it to the top three... Still, I expect Depeche Mode's "Wrong" to chart much better. It at least deserves it. Four places under U2 come the latest winners from Pro7's Popstarts, aka the casting show that gave us No Angels, Bro'Sis and Monrose. However, now for the first time ever, winning band Queensberry fails to make it even in the top 20 with its debut album. So far all winners have charted at least once in the top 10. The failure of Queensberry is not only certain to put a quick end on their career but also to question the show itself. And finally, let's just pay attention to two nice ladies, who seem to have been struck by the curse of having an old song refusing to die. As Katy Perry and Amy MacDonald smash hits "Hot n Cold" and "This Is The Life" are staying for months in the top 20, the follow-ups have charted outside it. Now the two girls we face the weird situation at which VIVA will continue to rotate "Hot n Cold" and "This Is The Life" but drop the new ones... Edited March 9, 200916 yr by YanBG
March 8, 200916 yr Tim Toupet had already a top 10 hit in the last carnival season with "Ich bin ein Döner" ;) Queensberry failed thanks to the record label's weird release strategy. Their first single back in December right after the end of the TV show was only released digitally and not applied for the charts. It sold pretty well on iTunes and Musicload and would have been Top 10 for sure. Well, at least their album made it into the Top 10 for 3 weeks.

Ash do you know which download sites are the biggest in Germany? As far as I know iTunes are nowhere near as big as in the UK.
March 9, 200916 yr I don't have any data.... but I think that iTunes and Musicload together will have a market share of like at least ~80%. Some years ago Musicload was by far the biggest one, but I think iTunes might have passed them since that. so maybe 50% iTunes, 35% Musicload... but that's only estimations...
