March 22, 200916 yr Hi Guys...new to the site. Saw the Punk V Metal and had to have my say. The Punk movement back in the late 70's...it's in your blood, it's not a fad like the crap nowadays. In 30 years time, are people gonna be talking about Green day, Blink, Dragon force...Nah, didn't think so. Green Day formed in 1987, and we're still talking about them, so, they've only about 8 years to go mate..... :P
March 22, 200916 yr Author Green Day formed in 1987, and we're still talking about them, so, they've only about 8 years to go mate..... :P yeah i definatly dont think that 'they dont last 30 years' crap works exactly, another band he mentioned, Blink formed in 1992, that's 17 years now (although they have just been split for 5 but they are back together) I dont think people realise these bands do actually last an incredibly long time, however much you think there music is good and innovative or not  Proberly just as many metal bands last as short as punk bands that dont last, and ones that last a long time or not. Infact we still have bands like The Buzzcocks who are still going strong and they formed in 1976 before Metallica formed.
May 22, 200916 yr I really like both but prefer metal. Punk was there first (The Monks' Black Monk Time 1966) but early metal was more popular (Beatles - Helter Skelter; Led Zeppelin 1 ) Metal has more depth than punk, in terms of both music and songwriting. Punk is NOT Just noise. Punk, post-punk and even pop-punk have produced some great albums and tunes. It has great bands and melody too. But Metal is just better overall. Some would say the creation of rap-metal has marred music but I think it has enhanced it. Edited May 22, 200916 yr by musicbox4249

I'd put the "Punk" (it was undefined in the late-60s) genesis as being the likes of MC5 and Iggy and the Stooges tbh, that sort of scuzzy, dirty sound in tunes like "Kick out the Jams" or "I Wanna Be Your Dog"....

Mainly due to the fact that they have such huge grossing tours.

Yeah, they're definitely early punk but the Monks were "scuzzy, dirty" too
May 24, 200916 yr I always thought Iggy was pretty much Alt. ... Alt & Punk, like Nirvana being Grunge & Alt. Alt. means not mainstream rock so punk & grunge are both alt. That's unless your talking about alternative in its most extreme kind; not fitting into any genres eg Beck
