1 A star is born

Will Young has come a long way since winning 2002’s Pop Idol on ITV – when he beat front-runner Gareth Gates to claim the top pop crown.The likeable performer has since gone to claim the (then) fast-selling single in UK history with his debut release (double A-side Evergreen / Anything Is Possible), sell millions of records, bag several top music awards, perform for royalty as well with many a music icon – and that's not to mention wowing crowds and critics alike with a clutch of high profile acting roles. Celebrate Will’s South Bank Show special with a look back at his career and some of his most memorable pictures.

02 Royal welcome

Will’s debut album, From Now Own, follows the huge success of his first single, and shoots to No.1. The star is then picked to perform alongside music greats (here with Queen's Brian May) as part of The Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations in July 2002.

3 2003

A year on from winning Pop Idol, the newcomer finds himself among 2003’s coveted list of BRIT Awards winners, including Robbie Williams, Coldplay and Eminem, after scooping the British Breakthrough Artist trophy. The star triumphed over fellow rising stars such as The Streets and Ms Dynamite. He also releases his second album, Friday’s Child, which includes the single Leave Right Now. It was nominated for the special BRITs category, Best British Single of the past 25 years, celebrating the award ceremony’s 25th birthday.

4 2004

Fresh from a sell-out theatre tour, Will appears at Olympic Torch Concert and duets with none-other-than soul legend, James Brown.

5 Will picks up his second BRIT Award. - this time for Best British Single for Your Game, from his Friday's Child album.Now a fully-fledged celebrity in his own right, Will is invited to appear on ITV's Parkinson chat show... and finds himself accosted by a famous fan, David Walliams.

6 All the world's a stage.

Will proves his versatility as a performer, taking a lead role in the big screen movie Mrs Henderson Presents..., which premieres in November 2005. The pop idol holds his own alongside acting heavyweights Dame Judie Dench and Bob Hoskins and wins rave reviews.

7 He's in fashion.

Will not only proves of top of his game musically but also in the style stakes - seen here hanging out with Sugababes at the Elle Style Awards in 2006.

8 Fancy that.

Er, no this isn't Will trying out a bold new look with a pal (that's Will on the right), but rather the pair are heading to Little Britain star Matt Lucas' fancy dress wedding in December 2006. Will proves he certainly moves in the right circles as he is chosen to sing at The Prince's Trust 30th birthday concert at the Tower of London by HRH Prince Charles.

9 All white .

The following summer Will is invited by princes William and Harry to perform at their mother's star-studded Concert for Diana at Wembley Stadium.

10 Will continues his ascent to pop royalty, as he joins a select group of stars who take part in the Olympic Party outside Buckingham Palace in The Mall in August.

11 The X Factor

Three months later the star returns to his talent show roots to mentor stars on the X Factor and also sing his latest hit Grace on the show, before old foe Simon Cowell. He pulls off a show-stopping performance which has all four judges on their feet, showing just how far he has come since winning Pop Idol in 2002.
