Fair enough that immigrants should learn the language of their new home nation. But forcing religion down everyone's throats (be they atheist, Muslim etc.) is quite disgusting - and having it on school walls amounts to little more than indoctrination IMO :/ I see what he's getting at but the way in which he's saying it just makes him sound like a complete lout...

Australian politicians have always been rather more outspoken than British politicians.

 

He's right to say that immigrants should respect the traditions of their new country but I would prefer to keep religion out of schools altogether.

 

As for the language question, we aren't in a very good position to complain. There are plenty of Brits living abroad who don't speak a word of their new country's language.

The man is an actually legend. You can see on the news that he honestly cares about the country and it's people. When news broke that some of the Victorian Bush fires were deliberately started he was being interviewed in Melbourne i think by an aussie station (i saw it on the news back home, it was just before i left for Aus.) and the woman interviewing him asked what he thought about that and he was genuinely horrified by it.

 

His equivalent of out pathetic vat cut was to give every tax payer a check for A$950 (£470 aprox.) there due to be sent out soon.

 

Not a single Aussie bank has gone bust or anywhere near it so far. their economy is in far better nick than the rest of the western world, they have only just had their first quarter of negative growth, and it was quite small too.

Not very subtle...but I fully agree that the laws of the land should not be influenced by the influx of a religion into parts of the country. Those who wish to live under Sharia law must remain where it is (wrongly in my opinion) in place. You should be made to make a choice between your religion and your lifestyle and if the former is really that important then the latter should be dictated by it.

 

Also, the despicable way women are treated under Sharia law has absolutely no place anywhere in the world...it should not be encouraged.

Rudd may have a point about Sharia Law, I'll give him that, but on all other points he is an ignorant arsehole who denies the facts that when these "good, christian" white people went to Australia, they weren't "natives", they butchered and murdered the REAL Australians- the aborigines - by the thousands, took their land, their dignity, and even tried to exterminate them with the whole "stolen generations" idea.... Did any of these "good, christian" people attempt to understand the aboriginal culture or attempt to learn the aboriginal language....? Did they fukk..... The white Australians have treated the aborigines in exactly the same manner as the Amerians treated the Navajo, the Apache, the Sioux, and the disrespect continues....

The Rudd government has changed a lot of things in Australia, one of which is all the stuff to do with the Aborigines.

 

If you have aboriginal heritage, no matter how small even like 1/20th then you can claim a lot of benefits, and grants/bursaries. Those of aboriginal descent get their university paid for and most of their living costs.

 

While there still is a gulf and p*** poor attitudes in many places across this fine, beuatiful but very racist nation, things are changing for the better.

You clearly have no experience of K-Rudd. He is not a racist, and was in fact the FIRST person from the government to apologise personally to the aborigines for the pain and hurt that was caused by the white australia policy. Nobody from any other ruling party has done that, nobody who implemented the policy has done that.

The UK needs to take note of this and have a serious think about it. We were in the UK first, we are the native citizens. And the immigrants should respect our culture and language. It was here a long time before they were. We should NOT have to pander to their beliefs and run scared incase we say something that might offend them. If they don't like it, they can f*** off home. If they really want to stay they should adapt and make an effort to fit in, just as we should when we move abroad but shamefully never happens.

And besides, Multi-lingual states DO function perfectly well - Canada, which I just mentioned, the US, Belgium (French and Flemish), Switzerland (which has French, German and Italian speaking parts), China (Mandarin and Cantonese, and no, knowledge of one does not necessarily mean you'll be able to follow the other, plenty of Cantonese speakers in Hong Kong have no knowledge whatsoever of Mandarin, and vice versa....). Britain used to be a multi-lingual country as well, with Welsh, Gaelic and Cornish being spoken in this country... Now, that part of our cultural heritage has been all but destroyed over the centuries by English cultural imperialism, a bit like the aboriginal and native american languages and cultures.....

What IS the point?

My view is based on the fact that i am currently LIVING in Australia. Hence the little Aussie flag next to my username. I don't read the aussie papers, i haven't been here long enough to discover the tabloids ie the ones to avoid. The news service isn't amazing on tv so i read it off Yahoo!7 which is basically one of the TV channels down here.

 

As for the 'prison' i believe the official term is detention centre. They don't often get kept their long before they throw them back out, and the people that get put there aren't potential immigrants they are illegal immigrants. We would do it if our stupid bone idol politicians could be f***ed to get off their arse and sort out the illegal immigrants in the UK instead of just pretending the problem doesn't exist.

 

Not everyone is sent home, some are kept their while their visa's are sorted out. Mainly when they've held a previous work visa but it has expired they look at their circumstances and let them stay.

 

They aren't animals about immigration, just far more strict than we are. And with good reason, the vast majority of the 20million population live on the coast lines and there just isn't enough water to go around. There is regular droughts and hose pipe bans. My flat is filled with water saving $h!te.

 

And Grimly what do you think of those who come to the UK and refuse to speak english, preferring to continue to speak polish or arabic???

 

The official language of Australia is English, just like the UK and the States.

 

Canada has both French and English as it's official languages same for Belgium, Switzerland and China. Spain doesn't recognise it's 2nd language which i can't remember the name of but i know it starts with the C and is the region Barcelona is in.

 

and the key word your missing in that quote is Mainly. (third word) he acknowledges other languages are spoken and he is just encouraging people to speak the main language of the country to help people integrate better. If i was PM, i'd make people pass an english test before they were allowed to live in the UK.

 

Welsh and Gaelic are still spoken in the UK.

 

Welsh is compulsory at all welsh schools to GCSE level. I have welsh cousins, and shame on you for not knowing the Gaelic is still spoken in rural northern scotland. and very much in the west.
