Drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, one of the original members of US band Smashing Pumpkins, has left the group, it has been announced.

In a statement on the band's website, singer and founding member Billy Corgan said that he would "continue to write and record as Smashing Pumpkins".

Chamberlin, who joined the alternative band in 1988, played on its recent 20th anniversary reunion tour.

Corgan said the band plan to head into the studio this spring.

Chamberlin played on all the Chicago band's albums except 1998's Adore.

Following the 2000 break-up of the band, Chamberlin joined Pumpkins frontman Corgan in the short-lived Zwan, before re-forming Smashing Pumpkins in 2005.

The band released their latest album, Zeitgeist, in 2007.

so it was pretty much a Corgan solo project but with a SP drummer before, and now it is literally just a Billy Corgan solo project, it is actually an insult he is still recording under The Smashing Pumpkins. The worst thing is that he is obviously using the name to make more money, if he actually cared about the music he would proberly record under his own name.

It just goes to show what a douche Billy Corgan is. Their recent live shows sound thoroughly LOL-tastic.

yeah Corgan has been p*** poor for so long now.

I remember when they plated Reading 2007 after NIN were on, it's embassasing when a headline act is shown up by the band before them

Sad thing is my mate thought they were amazing  (although even he agreed NIN were better and he doesnt even really like NIN).

It really is so sad that Corgan seems to be so determined to utterly pish on the Pumpkins' legacy... They were a really good band in the 90s, when they actually WERE a band, and not merely an excuse for Corgan to print money, "Gish" and "Siamese Dream" remain faves of mine.... "Zeitgeist" was not a particularly good album (although, it has to be said, a bit better than anything he did as Zwan....LOL), and, frankly, I never even bothered with the live show, I'm more than content to have my memories of the times I saw the Pumpkins live with their original line up - Corgan, Iha, D'arcy and Chamberlain, although, Melissa Auf Der Maur was also good....
