Okay i'm gonna do a long post to show my final takings on Harper's Island...

Well first off i've loved the show. Was a breath of fresh air to what's about. There was complexity and development in the characters, a wonder location and a really good mystery. But ultimately poor writing let the show down. And i'm really disappointed. I know the show was billed as a sort fo Scream mixed into a soap, but seriously? There's basing it on Scream then TOTALLY RIPPING OFF SCREAM 3. A poor, poor attempt by the writers imo. I actually enjoyed the final clips with some of the cast at the end, it was a really nice touch. It showed them all being happy, and the ending of Henry's killer smile was good. But imo the writers used too much plot. They complicated the whole thing, and ultimately made it so obvious for us as the viewers, but not the Harper's Island charcters.

The writing of Henry as the killer was weak. Right, so his motive was he wanted him and Abby to live together on an island. Hmm OK I can buy that a little. But the writing was f***ing terrible. So John Wakefield was going to kill him and they made a 'connection'? Lame. Then a year later he finds out his son. Then within moments of this he kills a man. Again LAME. Chris Gorham played Henry brilliantly, I mean he went from being a rock and Mr. Tough to his cold, sadistic, twisted killer - I really bought it from his acting skills, shame the material he was given was so poor. The ending was so clique tbh. And whilst i've predicted Henry as the killer for a long time, I was hoping they would reveal much more behind the killngs. For example, Uncle Marty wanted to invest in Malcom's business, and he doesn't think to maybe use a bank to invest? Poor writing again.

Onto the actual episodes, well I was right about Henry killing Trish. From the first 5 mins it was painfully obvious that Henry was the accomplice just by his actions. I still don't get why the killed them one by one. Danny's death was pretty heroic, and i've found Sully a bit of a dick throughout the show, but his death was tough. He could have got off the island, but he chose to stay and help (redeeming himself) and then he was eventually murdered by his best friend. Ouch.

Again I wish they'd have explained the killings much more. I mean so Henry killed Rev Fein, Trish, Sully, Richard, JD and Katherine - and we're to assume Wakefield killed Uncle Marty, Lucy, Beth, Malcom, Hunter (suspect that was Henry, and maybe Malcom too). All in all, a good show let down by amatuer writing at the end.

Thank you Rooney for the link :D

It was really exciting, especially the 13th episode. I was so on the edge on my chair for most of the time. Although Henry being the killer was quite an obvious fact and this finale suspence almost made me insane I think the whole plot was amazing, we need more TV shows like this one.

I shall agree with you on these lame things, especially about a 'connection' and when he kills a guy. This far-fetched scene was adduced by the writers too much in my opinion.

No probs for the link! Wasn't the best of quality, but I was so glad when I found it.

All of the forums are in meltdown atm, saying they hated the ending. It was a cliche. I mean mother and child, and reunited lovers are the 4 survivors. It would have been better if either Abby or Jimmy had died and Sully or Danny had survived imo. Henry being the killer i've no problem with. OK I guessed it (and a lot of people did) but that's only because we're so sucked into the show. It wasn't a let down for me, I just found the writing around it poor.

For me, the finale sucked! Loads of plotholes, loads of unanswered questions, just bad writing really. The only thing that saved the show was the acting which was top notch for nearly all the characters, including creepy Madison

That's what i'm annoyed about as well. In hindsight, this would have worked better with say 9 episodes? And then less characters too.

When answers get given on shows, fans are always not going to like it (see LOST). It happens. But the writing in the final episode for example was awful. I mean Henry falls off a cliff, then a few mins later he's fine.

and to me the motive was crap. Sorry, but it is. So he kills all those people just to have Abby alone on the island, purlease. Not to mention that they seem to have killed them all in random order, nothing was planned. Why not kill Trish earlier for example, if the motive was nothing to do with her or her family? Its just stupid.

I agree that they should have had less characters, but I think the 13 episodes would've been ok if they had cut some of the crap from the earlier episodes and used the later ones to explain the deaths. Although that didnt matter it seems. The worst is that the writers actually believe they wrote an amazing ending, when everyone predicted exactly what was gonna happen during the episodes...

Oh and poor Gigi! :P

Oh the motive was f***ing awful, and a total rip off of Scream 3. If Gorham didn't play Henry's character change so convincingly, then there'd have been hell about it (seriously Christopher Gorham was excellent in this episode). I mean what I don't get is one minute he's planning to kill Abby, then all of a sudden it's his plan for him and her to live together forever. And how the hell did the police know Jimmy, Henry and Abby were dead? There were NO bodies!!!

I think the killings were random, and if you remember Trish SHOULD have died in like episode 4 I think? Looking back at it now there were subtle hints each episode that Henry was the killer, and while I picked up on a lot of them, some I didn't!

Yeah, but since then he's had like a million opportunities to get rid of her. Why wait til now?

I have no idea how he got Abby and Jimmy's DNA on the church (which I thought he said he burned it down). He most likely cut Jimmy and put some blood in the church, and perhaps either did something to Abby while she was asleep. But yeah, loads of unanswered things.

I think he never told his father that he wanted to kill Abby, I think they're plan together might've been to get rid of everyone, but he probably told Wakefold he'd kill Abby last or something. Dunno.

They were planning to get rid of everyone but Henry chose Abby over his father in the last minute hence this sudden change. Blood and dead bodies were everywhere so i guess they just thought that there's not much of likelihood that the said three, Henry, Abby and Jimmy, are alive.

CHRIST. OK. The show was fantastic. I loved most of the characters, and each death was really really good. But, um, the finale. Yeah... it was odd.

Overall, I'd give the show 8/10. I think the finale was good, but the motive was farfetched. C'mon, if I had a connection every time I shared a glance with somebody, then we'd have a problem. But I think Henry's macho to freak was really well done, and I really enjoyed his happy "I'm-not-going-to-kill-you-after-I-just-helped-murder-your-best-friends" thing, and his death was sad. :(

Who should have survived: Abby, Cal, Chloe, Sully, Trish, Nikki

Who should have died: Shea, Madison, Jimmy

I'm definitely going to buy the box set if/when it's released. :)

Abby didn't die :kink:

And btw EVERYONE on every forum wanted Madison to die  Me not included. She was weird but i liked her. :heehee:

Madison should have died, but she didn't as she was a kid. Such a cliche. That's why Shea didn't die either because she had to look after Madison as all her family is dead.
Abby didn't die :kink:

I know. I was just including everyone. :heehee:

Hm.

I've read there was another ending.

Henry still as the killer, but explained better, and he had pictures or something.

Perhaps it'll be on the DVD.

Everyone in this thread might wanna check out this new mid-season drama...

Is probably better written than Harper's Island, but nowhere near as good a concept...

Seems interesting. I'd agree about the concept and hope the killer wouldn't be as obvious as Henry was

Edited by Un Lobo De Pavel

That seems interesting, hopefully I'll watch it :)

Back to Harper's Island, I agree with what you all said the ending was quite boring, why waste such a perfect idea on a boring ending. I loved the show though kept watching it week after week.

I was reading one of the producers' Twitter account, and he said that Henry was always going to be the killer because there was the most motive and story to play around with. They did toy with the idea of the Sheriff being the killer for a little while, but ultimately it was always going to be Henry. I just wish they'd explained the killings into more detail. If the whole JW thing wasn't there it'd have worked much better. I'd have rather it being that JW WAS dead, then Henry found out that Wakefield was his father so he went on a murderous rampage to follow in his father's footsteps. Wakefield being there, just made it... too cheesy. But i'm not gonna let the negatives get in the way of the positives, Harper's Island was a great show, it started slowly but from episode 5-11, it was just some of the best TV for me i've ever seen.
