Posted March 22, 200916 yr Obviously iTunes have by far the biggest share, but does anyone have even a rough idea of what percentage they, and the other main download retailers have, of the overall UK download market?
March 23, 200916 yr there doesn't seem to be any up to date figures published for this- i asked 7Digital about this once and they said they couldn't say! Most people seem to think 50-70% of download market in the UK is iTunes. Its seems obvious they are the biggest, but i've seen songs do quite well when they are low on iTunes, with someone usually posting "But Howz! Is onli X onz Itoons!!!!111" The answer being? There are other download sites (and physicals) If you find anything would be interested as i've wondered this myself :)
March 23, 200916 yr I'm guessing that iTunes has about 60 to 70% of total sales. I do think amazon.co.uk are making a considerable impact with perhaps them having a 20%(wild guess) share already. However on a single by single basis it could vary considerably as: -If a single is not listed on iTunes, then 100% of it's sales will be elsewhere. Obvious when you think about it. -If an artists main site/mailing list is advising it's fans to go buy it as 7digital (or elsewhere) then you can be sure the position on the 7digital chart will be greatly increased and likewise the iTunes position will be decreased. -Lastly, don't forget prices, why buy "My Life Would Suck Without you by Kelly Clarkson' from iTunes for 79p when you can buy it on amazon for 29p. The price explains why Kelly is currently #1 on amazon but #7 on iTunes. Edited March 23, 200916 yr by Breathe Slow
March 23, 200916 yr I posted for a while an article about this in a thread (can't remember where tbh) but it was from 2004 or something like that. nothing fresher is on the internet tho. If I find it, I post it again.
March 23, 200916 yr This is quite a fresh article: Amazon-tops-UK-digital-downloads This is an article from 2005: apple_responds_to_rivals
March 24, 200916 yr Cheers ben. I bookmarked an article a while ago someone posted but on another comp so i'll look out if its the same one. Not sure if it was you - you're signature wasn't as memorable before Hugh Jackman
March 24, 200916 yr Author This is quite a fresh article: Amazon-tops-UK-digital-downloads Thanks for this. I would guess then, that iTunes has maybe 50-60% of the market, Amazon maybe 20%, and all the others, the remainder (except for the 2% physical sales). :w00t:
March 24, 200916 yr They surveyed 515 users? It's almost like those commercials that say "67% agreed, 30 women tested".
