it will be soon the mercury music prize. and this year its rumoured that twee pop megartistee Isobel Campbell will be in the running with her album

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/9a/Ballad_of_the_Broken_Seas.jpg however as the album is credited to her and Mark Lanegan this makes the act only 50% British!! hafter the controversy with antony last year and his multinational band. Should acts be disqualified from the mercury music prize if the act is not totally british? should they be disqualified if they go over a certain percentage of foreign nationals. or does it not matter?

Yeah I think the artists should be totally British tbh.

It is a British award, so yeah defo should! ^_^

The award is for British acts and you don't see acts like Gnarls Barkley or All American Rejects being able to go up for the award, and if they ain't British artists / bands then I don't think they should win.

I'm still wondering how Anthony and The Johnstons won last year.

the american version is open to all nations i thinkl, just as long as the acts are smaller and not magaselling

that was a technicality of antony's birthplace, even though hes lived in the states for agews and his backing band are international

...because it's a work of unparallelled brilliance?

He's British - born here, raised here - moved to the States in his young adult life.

I think the Mercury Prize should award acts who are British - not half British. There are hundreds of brilliant UK acts - why would Mercury even think of awarding a non-Brit act this British prize?

Anthony and The Johnson's is one of those you either love them or hate them. I personally don't like them.

The mercury music prize should still the for sole British artists though.

I agree it's a like him or loathe him type of album - but you have to admire him for his don't-give-a-toss attitude and the balls he had for making it. These days, you have to admire anything that's not bland and faceless and nameless, I think.

the act is not even half british as they are down as being from UK/USA/Canada/Russia

my point is that Antony and the Johnsons was born in the UK, raised here and moved the the US in his late childhood/teens... that makes him full British in my eyes.

As for the Isobel Campbell album - I heard some snippets - and it's truly horrible. Whether she's British, American or from Outer Mongolia - the album's a stinker.

On the topic of the mercury music prize, I know its a bit early to start specualating but so far who do you think could be nominated for it.

Some of my guesses would be Artic Monkeys, The Kooks, Corinne Bailey Rae, Plan B.

Anybody else have any ideas?

she is Scottish, the problem is that the album is co-credited to a bloke who was from the screeming trees and did a lot with qotsa
