June 20, 200619 yr There is far too much American culture creeping into English society Everywhere I go I hear people with London accents using terms like "sidewalk" "restroom" "mall" etc - erm its a ****ing pavement, toilet and shopping centre dumb ****s :rolleyes: (not you guys but the morons who talk in American terms ;) ) Then add to that the ambulance chasing and compensation culture that is polluting England where someone wants damages for trivial little things, that $h!t made its way across the pond and is destroying society American grammar is damaging the true English that people should be writing, I often get CV's from people who have probably never been to America in their lives being submitted with "center" and stuff like that Add to that the English obsession with fast food England is more and more becoming the 51st state of America :rolleyes: :rolleyes: :rolleyes:

June 20, 200619 yr The USA IS the most powerful nation on the earth, so any globalisation process is inevitably going to be largely influenced by them. It's sad that one country should be able to effectively shape the world as they wish.

Everywhere you bloody look there's more creeping Americanisation. We're calling "Shopping Centres" bloody "Malls" now.... <_< and the crowding out of small independant cafes in favour of ever growing amounts of Starbucks.....
June 20, 200619 yr Here in Brazil we also call it "shopping centers", even tought that´s a foreigner expression to our country. We were not able to create a portuguese expression to describe it.

Why the hell not?? :o Surely in Portugal itself there has to be a Portuguese language expression for it. What I respect about the French is that the "Academie Francais" absolutely refuses to allow any non-French expressions in the French language, thus France maintains its cultural identity. Isn't there an equivalent Portuguese thing...?

Isn't there an equivalent Portuguese thing...? Well, the first time a "shopping center" was installed in Brazil people didn´t knew how to call it... And then used the same name it was given in other countries. The name became a sucess and everyone started to use it... It´s popular demand, language cannot be controled. On the other hand, most countries use the expression "mobile", even portugal use the portuguese word "móvel", but here in brazil we use "celular", which is an equivalent to "cell phone". It´s an illusion to think that a language can be "pure" and free of any foreigner influence. Portuguese itself is a degenaration of latin, mixed with other elements (arabic, african, etc...). In the 21st century the language is suffering american influence. Everything that is being ivented now receives an english name. Some english verbs have been adapted to out language, like "delete" = "deletar", it´s a foreginer word that is already completely included in our vocabulary. I belive in the future all the languages in the world will converge to something more similar, probably influenced by English. These days teenages in most non-english speaking countries have an average knowledge of the english language, because of music, movies, internet, etc... When they grow up, their kids will speak english better then them.

Well theres probs a version in Portugal but maybe its not taken seriously in Brazil? probs like american english and british english? isnt Portugal the place that you can get arrested if you call your kid something like plantpot or vacuuummcleaner (or other celeb daft names :lol: ), have to call them approved Portugese names!! or is that place Norway?

I heard that you have chose among a list of "decent" names, so there can´t be any Apple Martin or BlueBall Halliwell, but I don´t know if it´s true... Brazil is separated from Portugal for something like 1,5 century, we don´t get too much influence from them these days, altough I think people in Portugal heavily listen to brazilian music and watch brazilian shows. But it´s very rare to hear something from a portuguese artist in brazil.
