Posted April 16, 200916 yr Friday come`s round again! With another bunch of the week`s charts, that`s top films, dvds, tv, albums, an debatable flashback (that bugs me), and finally back later for the up to minute singles chart. Going to slag off MY FAMILY this week...Why is it that Don Taffner (the man chiefly behind the prog), insists on rehashing old scripts from other shows for this? Last week he took an old script from MAN ABOUT THE HOUSE. Yes, Ben becomes coward against a chap in a bar. 1974, Robin Tripp is a coward in a bar with a chap (who`s bigger than him). DON TAFFNER already re-used this script when he turned MAN ABOUT THE HOUSE into THREE`S COMPANY for the American audience. In previous series, old episodes of scripts from BLESS THIS HOUSE, and SYKES have been used. Can`t he be just a little bit more original?! Is there no copyright in those 1970s (far better) scripts? This week`s top albums: Based on a rota of sales, and adjusted figures for falling figures of new entries. 01 01 NOW 72 - VARIOUS 02 03 THE FAME - LADY GAGA 03 05 ONLY BY THE NIGHT - KINGS OF LEON 04 02 KINGDOM OF RUST - DOVES 05 06 THE BOAT THAT ROCKED - OST 06 13 FREEDOM - AKON 07 11 IT`S NOT ME IT`S YOU - LILY ALLEN 08 04 TWO SUNS - BAT FOR LASHES 09 08 ANNIE LENNOX COLLECTION - ANNIE LENNOX 10 10 POP PRINCESSES - VARIOUS 11 NE DARK DAYS LIGHT YEARS - SUPER FURRY ANIMALS 12 09 CLUBLAND CLASSIX VOL. 2 - VARIOUS 13 17 I AM SASHA FIERCE - BEYONCE 14 RE TWILIGHT - OST 15 20 INVADERS MUST DIE - PRODIGY 16 27 SONGS FOR YOU TRUTHS FOR ME - JAMES MORRISON 17 21 FEARLESS - TAYLOR SWIFT 18 07 IT`S BLITZ - YEAH YEAH YEAHS 19 30 HANNAH MONTANA - OST 20 15 FLEET FOXES - FLEET FOXES 21 NE FOOTSTEPS - CHRIS DE BURGH 22 NE BARE BONES - MADELINE PEYROUX 23 28 THE CIRCUS - TAKE THAT 24 16 SONGS FOR MY MOTHER - RONAN 25 24 SELDOM SEEN KID - ELBOW 26 18 HALLELUJAH - VARIOUS 27 40 TAPESTRY RE-MASTERED - CAROLE KING 28 14 DAVE PEARCE TRANCE ANTHEMS 09 - VARIOUS 29 22 ALL I EVER WANTED - KELLY CLARKSON 30 37 FUNHOUSE - PINK A-ha, ABBA go back up to 32 this week...Mamma mia also went back up, just outside the top 10 dvds! Price cuts in the offing then! NOW 72 takes the runaway lead of LADY GAGA though, no catching them VAs! :winner: We got to flashback now...to April 1978. Controversy on this one for me. All will be explained! Firstly 1978`s tv: 01 THIS IS YOUR LIFE 18.80M 02 RISING DAMP 18.20M 03 CORONATION STREET (MON) 17.40M 04 MIXED BLESSINGS 16.70M 05 ARMCHAIR THRILLER 16.30M 06 WHODUNNIT 15.70M 07 WILDE ALLIANCE 15.20M 08 GET SOME IN 15.00M 09 CORONATION STREET (WEDS) 14.90M 10 RONNIE CORBETT`S SPECIAL 14.70M 11 CELEBRITY SQUARES 14.50M 12 ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL 14.50M 13 CROSSROADS (MON) 14.50M 14 SALE OF THE CENTURY 14.50M 15 CROSSROADS (TUES) 14.20M 16 CROSSROADS (WEDS) 13.90M 17 CROSSROADS (THURS) 13.60M 18 EMMERDALE FARM (TUES) 13.50M 19 GOING STRAIGHT 13.30M 20 EMMERDALE FARM (THURS) 12.90M Well EAMONN ANDREWS pull the strings for the number one show. RISING DAMP was in it`s final series (without Richard Beckinsale, who at this point was starring in the sequel to PORRIDGE (GOING STRAIGHT). Surprising GOING STRAIGHT never repeated by the BBC themselves. CORO content with nearly 17 and a half million at 3. MIXED BLESSINGS was a sit-com where White man marries Black girl...shock horror! ARMCHAIR THRILLER was made by Southern television...an anthology of half hour plays/mysteries. WHODUNNIT was introduced by JON PERTWEE...this was the last series, and had a format similar to Cluedo. In which panel celebrities had to guess who commited a murder at 6.45pm on Monday night! JOHN STRIDE and JULIA FOSTER played crimebusting husband and wife duo Rupert and Amy Wilde in WILDE ALLIANCE at 9pm on Thursdays. GET SOME IN was another sitcom...set in the RAF, and National Service based. Originally it had starred ROBERT LYNDSEY (MY FAMILY), but he went to star in CITIZEN SMITH on BBC1...So Thames TV drafted in KARL HOWLMAN (BRUSH STROKES/MULBERRY) to replace him, as JAKEY...and I believe his surname was also Smith. TONY SELBY played B.A.S.T.A.R.D. Marsh (the loud-mouthed Corporal). RONNIE CORBETT sailed solo in his special. RONNIE BARKER was concentrating on other things, so we only got 2 shows from THE TWO RONNIES in 1978...a Best Of in May, and the Boxing Day newie. Why do UK GOLD (or G.O.L.D.) cut great chunks out of the 1976/77 series of it? I can`t get it...CELEBRITY SQUARES moved from Sunday Afternoons to Saturday Evenings for good old BOB MONKHOUSE...The Big Box Game, in which contestants had to agree or disagree to Celebrities answers, with the likes of WILLIE RUSHTON, ARTHUR MULLARD, JOHN INMAN, AMI MCDONALD (no not that one), etc. You could win a thousand pounds!!!!!!! The Saturday series was shorter than the original Sunday one, as in the original Bob did around where he was asked questions by the celebrities. Also, in the Saturday series LANCE PERCIVAL provided the voice-overs...the Sunday show had KENNY EVERETT doing this. Early days for the series of ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL...Arghh PETER DAVISON! Who was 58 on Monday...his real name is PETER MOFFAT, you know! Could never understand why ITV had 2 quizzes on Saturdays...Celebrity Squares got the honours at 5.45, and SALE OF THE CENTURY with old NICHOLAS PARSONS (sounding rather pompous) at 7.30, or 8.30 depending on your ITV region. The top albums in April 78: 01 01 20 GOLDEN GREATS - NAT "KING" COLE 02 03 SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER - OST 03 10 AND THEN THERE WERE THREE - GENESIS 04 08 LONDON TOWN - WINGS 05 02 THE ALBUM - ABBA 06 06 KAYA - BOB MARLEY 07 04 20 GOLDEN GREATS - BUDDY HOLLY/CRICKETS 08 07 CITY TO CITY - GERRY RAFFERTY 09 05 THE KICK INSIDE - KATE BUSH 10 09 THIS YEARS MODEL - ELVIS COSTELLO 11 11 PLASTIC LETTERS - BLONDIE 12 NE THE STUD - OST 13 13 RUMOURS - FLEETWOOD MAC 14 NE THE RUTLES - RUTLES 15 14 OUT OF THE BLUE - ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA 16 15 PASTICHE - MANHATTEN TRANSFER 17 16 FONZIES FAVOURITES - VARIOUS 18 12 REFLECTIONS - ANDY WILLIAMS 19 21 BAT OUT OF HELL - MEATLOAF 20 24 NEW BOOTS AND PANTIES - IAN DURY AND THE BLOCKHEADS NAT "KING" COLE did well to keep SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER off the top for a week! As JOHN TRAVOLTA danced his way through the album. GENESIS "AND THEN THERE WERE THREE" had cult status, as it got stuck at #2 for a whole month. WINGS tried a single of the title track of the album, but it didn`t do so well...Many title tracks from albums don`t do so well...thinking ELTON JOHN (HONKY CHATEAU)...well HONKY CAT...and of course MICHAEL JACKSON`s "THRILLER" single did not do as well as maybe thought. BOB MARLEY was doing well. Not only with "KAYA", but EXODUS was outside the 20...and another single title that did not sell so well! BUDDY HOLLY was there just off a #2 album...kept from the top spot by ABBA. 7 straight weeks for ABBA-THE ALBUM. GERRY RAFFERTY got a top weight #4 album, that stuck around for some time. KATE BUSH was also off a #1 album, with her first THE KICK INSIDE. ELVIS COSTELLO got some singles from THIS YEARS MODEL, as the album peaked at 8. BLONDIE got off to a flying start. FLEETWOOD MAC, ELO, and MEATLOAF were there forever...as THE RUTLES mimicked a kind of Beatlesque for tv. Class with MANHATTEN TRANSFER. IAN DURY gots his boots and panties out...Don`t ever play "Clever Trevor" to Trevs...he hates it! HAPPY DAYS was also on telly all over the place on ITV regions...as SUZI QUATRO returned home to appear in it, and the songs featured were on "FONZIES FAVOURIES"....Wasn`t The Fonz, a bit of a drip! Not really that cool was he! ;) Down went ANDY WILLIAMS...and yet another album outside the 20 was called "PENNIES FROM HEAVEN" from those VARIOUS ARTISTS. 1978s Singles...with the controversy! 01 14 NIGHT FEVER - BEE GEES 02 02 I WONDER WHY - SHOWADDYWADDY 03 07 NEVER LET HER SLIP AWAY - ANDREW GOLD 04 04 MATCHSTICK MEN AND MATCHSTALK CATS AND DOGS - BRIAN AND MICHAEL 05 03 IF YOU CAN`T GIVE ME LOVE - SUZI QUATRO 06 01 BAKER STREET - GERRY RAFFERTY 07 08 WITH A LITTLE LUCK - WINGS 08 10 TOO MUCH TOO LITTLE TOO LATE - DENIECE WILLIAMS/JOHNNY MATHIS 09 06 FOLLOW YOU FOLLOW ME - GENESIS 10 05 DENIS - BLONDIE 11 12 WALK IN LOVE - MANHATTEN TRANSFER 12 15 SOMETIMES WHEN WE TOUCH - DAN HILL 13 09 WUTHERING HEIGHTS - KATE BUSH 14 16 MORE LIKE THE MOVIES - DR HOOK 15 21 SINGIN`IN THE RAIN - SHEILA AND B. BBC had it number 1 for 3 weeks. In all other charts RECORD BUSINESS, NME, MELODY MAKER say it never got higher than #4! I have always wondered if the BBC/BMRB Chart made a mistake...when BRIAN AND MICHAEL climbed from 10 to 3 on March 21st, they went down to 4 on 28th. BAKER STREET climbed to 3 on 28th...I really wonder if BAKER STREET was really number 1 instead of BRIAN AND MICHAEL???? BAKER STREET was 2 weeks at the top of RECORD BUSINESS. NIGHT FEVER went there a week earlier too...very strange it always seemed to me. Anyway on the rest of the chart: ANDREW GOLD getting his biggest hit. SHOWADDYWADDY did make it to the top on NME and MELODY MAKER`S Charts, though not RECORD BUSINESS or BMRB. SUZI QUATRO doing alright, and back in the States. WINGS had "A Little Luck" from the LONDON TOWN album. JOHNNY MATHIS teamed up with DENIECE WILLIAMS for his comeback, and my was it big. GENESIS followed themselves all the way to #6. DENIS had been a RECORD BUSINESS #1 for BLONDIE. MANHATTEN TRANSFER finally got a hit out of WALK IN LOVE. DAN HILL struck, but couldn`t follow up. KATE BUSH burst on to the scene, and so unique in her technique. DR HOOK returned to the top 20. CHIC danced all the way to #9. BOOMTOWN RATS were so 1970s. ERUPTION scored with the lead of PRECIOUS WILSON. HOT CHOCOLATE proved "Every 1`s A Winner". MICHAEL ZAGER BAND chanted their way to the top 10. ELVIS COSTELLO didn`t want to go to Chelsea...He`d seen them play!!!! NICK LOWE was out of DAVE EDMUND`s ROCKPILE. RICHARD MYHILL played the piano, as he tangoed. SQUEEZE finally got a hit...GIFFORD, TILBROOK, and even JOOLS HOLLAND. SAMANTHA SANG became a female BEE GEE. ANDY CAMERON took Scotland to the World Cup coz England dinna qualify! :o DEE D JACKSON was your AU-TO-MA-TIC LOV-ER. BOB MARLEY was asking "Is This Love"...not with Dee D Jackson, it wasn`t! ELTON JOHN had lot`s of EGO, but hardly any hair! The BEE GEES giving a hand on 3 top 40 hits, then (Stayin Alive, Emotions, and Night Fever). RAYDIO featured the tones of RAY PARKER JNR. Down for the REAL THING...real ego. TINA CHARLES getting smaller but fatter! GLADYS KNIGHT sang CHESNEY HAWKES...not really! WAR were going Spanish...as RAFAELLA CARRA took us to Italy...and we even had the KU KLUX KLAN, as RAINBOW said "Long Live Rock N`Roll!" As we Rock N`Roll onwards to the up to minute singles....Let`s look at the top pre-orders: The Pre-Order Singles: 01 LOVE SEX MAGIC - CIARA 27th Apr 02 UNTOUCHABLE - GIRLS ALOUD 27th Apr 03 NUMBER 1 - TINCHY STRYDER/N-DUBZ 20th Apr 04 IF U SEEK AMY - BRITNEY SPEARS 4th May 05 PLEASE DON`T LEAVE ME - PINK 27th Apr 06 SOMETHING IS SQUEEZING MY SKULL - MORRISEY 27th Apr 07 THE CLIMB - MILEY CYRUS 27th Apr 08 RETURN THE FAVOUR - KERI HILSON 27th Apr 09 WARRIOR`S DANCE - PRODIGY 11th May 10 CANDY - PAOLO NUTINI 18th May 11 MAGNIFICENT - U2 4th May 12 SUNNY DAYS - KID BRITISH 20th Apr 13 TINY DANCER - IRONIK 27th Apr 14 DRIVE TO THE CITY - GO: AUDIO 20th Apr 15 LONGING FOR LULLABIES - KLEERUP 18th May The Pre-Order Albums: 01 21ST CENTURY BREAKDOWN - GREEN DAY 15th May 02 SOUNDS OF THE UNIVERSE - DEPECHE MODE 20th Apr 03 RELAPSE - EMINEM 18th May 04 BEFORE I SELF DESTRUCT - 50 CENT 11th May 05 MUSIC FOR THE PEOPLE - ENEMY 27th Apr 06 SOUTHERN GRAMMAR - MORRISEY 27th Apr 07 JOURNAL PLAGUE LOVERS - MANIC STREET PREACHERS 18th May 08 LUNGS - FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE 6th July 09 DEVIL YOU KNOW - HEAVEN AND HELL 27th Apr 10 WEST RYDER PAUPER LUNATIC ASYLUM - KASABIAN 8th June 11 TOGETHER THROUGH LIFE - BOB DYLAN 27th Apr 12 BE HUMAN - FIGHTSTAR 20th Apr 13 QUICKEN THE HEART - MAXIMO PARK 11th May 14 BATTLE FOR THE SUN - PLACEBO 8th June 15 ABNORMALLY ATTRACTED TO SIN - TORI AMOS 19th May Depeche Mode for top album, next week? Doubt they will outsell Now 72, though. I don`t think Tinchy Stryder/N-dubz single will be top single, no!! Hold on for the latest singles charts, coming very soon....
April 17, 200916 yr Thanks Dave Off to the UK Eurovision Preview Party tonight :w00t: Can you tell me if Jade Ewen - Its My Time (our fantastic entry) or the official compilation of all this years entries, have registered on ore-orders at all yet? Thanks!
April 17, 200916 yr I think this was the week when we moved to Romford, and a fortnight later we got burgled :o I even remember the night it was a Saturday as the Eurovision final was transmitted that night in 1978, I hardly remember any tracks but I vividly remember Baker Street and the Suzi Quatro's track and obviously Kate Bush, how can I forget the beautiful "Wuthering Heights"
April 17, 200916 yr How did Harry Hill make the top TV programmes when Series 8 finished on 4th April??!
April 17, 200916 yr I don't mind who's #1 next week, could be a number of songs (Calvin Harris, La Roux, Green Day, Eminem, Tinchy/N-Dubz) and none of them are bad. I would love Tinchy to be #1 though :D
April 17, 200916 yr Nice to see GA enter on pre-orders after the no show last week. Can i just check (again) are the pre-orders only counting those in the last 7 days, rather than the total number? For example Britney was in the top10 preorders last week, and this week she is at #4, behind GA who weren't top10 last week but are #2 this week. So does this mean Britney could still have more preorders in total, but fewer were placed in the last 7 days than for Girls Aloud? Thanks for the work as always Dave, an entertaining read :) Ps- Every thought of adding the Games chart as well, since you already do TV and DVD? Mainly come for the music but i really like the other stuff you include together as its interesting :)
April 17, 200916 yr Britney, Morrissey, Kleerup, Maximo Park, Placebo, & Tori Amos getting preorders. :cheer: :cheer:
April 17, 200916 yr omg at those 1978 viewing figures!! Whats happened then? Do people watch less tv or is because there are more channels now?
April 17, 200916 yr omg at those 1978 viewing figures!! Whats happened then? Do people watch less tv or is because there are more channels now? More channels, the internet, streaming/catch up services, DVD is cheap and high quality. Also people playing games etc on their TV instead. Its all effected it take your pick really. No longer just 5 channels to choose from! (or 3 in those days! :o) Edited April 17, 200916 yr by spicefunk

Outside the top 50, it`s a case of WHITE LIES, AMERICAN REJECTS, THE LES MISERABLES (THE GLUMS CAST)!! Oh, Ron! Ask your Grandparents, about that! They are in the top 60, as is JENNIFER HUDSON, and YEAH YEAH YEAHS. Take a top 70 with ALESHA DIXON - LET`S GET EXCITED, PRODIGY - WARRIORS DANCE, DEADMAU5 AND KASCADE. Where`s GREEN DAY you cry? Not enough sales for my list! But they will be there for Sunday, for sure. NOTE: These are not the Official Charts. The Singles Chart is based on Chart Show tv`s, but with added sales to give it the title of The Most Up To Date Chart In Britain...at this point. Don`t forget Chart Show tv`s top 20 videos on Saturdays at 9am, and Sunday at 11am (Sky Channel 365).
April 17, 200916 yr THE LES MISERABLES (THE GLUMS CAST)!! Oh, Ron! Ask your Grandparents, about that! Jimmy Edwards with the big hairy bushy bush underneath his nose
April 17, 200916 yr Excellent stuff Dave. :D Impressive that GaGa is beating Calvin physicals seeing as Poker Face has been out on the album and to download since January! :cheer:
April 17, 200916 yr Author How did Harry Hill make the top TV programmes when Series 8 finished on 4th April??! That`s because TV Ratings are always 2 weeks behind from BARB.
April 17, 200916 yr And on the present singles chart, the London Collective was nearly out of the top 40 chart on Tuesday, my word it certainly crept up again :o Not looking that good for Eminem  there goes my prediction out of the water LOL at the Comic Relief track still in the physical chart.
April 17, 200916 yr Author Jimmy Edwards with the big hairy bushy bush underneath his nose  Well done Martin! You probably remember the 1979 ITV series though! Of course there was the 50s Radio series "Take It From Here". THE GLUMS re-appeared in BRUCE FORSYTH`S BIG NIGHT in Sept 1978, and when it was cancelled we got the Sunday 7.15pm series with Patricia Brake as "Eth", Jimmy Edwards (as you said) as Pa Glum, and Ian Lavender took on the role of the daft "Ron". Originally June Whitfield played Eth on Radio, and Australian Dick Bentley played Ron.
April 17, 200916 yr Author Nice to see GA enter on pre-orders after the no show last week. Mainly come for the music but i really like the other stuff you include together as its interesting :) I might well do...Watch this space! I think it`s good to get a lot of charts together, I know many miss those Top Tens that used to appear in the Sunday People, and other Sunday papers And you are right about pre-orders in this case...7 days.
April 17, 200916 yr Dave, do you know the difference between numbers 2 and 3 (La Roux and Lady Gaga) in the singles?
April 17, 200916 yr I might well do...Watch this space! I will do indeed! Err, was i right about the preorder thing?
