Posted April 17, 200916 yr So this time last year we had all bought our copy of 'E=MC²' or downloaded the leak earlier. The majority of us were raving over it and had little bad to say about it, but how has this changed a year on? Did you stay in love with it? migrate back to her other albums? love it long time? or is it all a bit thanx 4 nothin' now? For me, I remember when it first came out it sounded like a fierce choice for my album of the year but it gradually slipped. I think it's quite a consistent album with a strong start and a weaker final two tracks. "Migrate" really was the best thing on there and it's sitting at my 4th most played track on iTunes in the last year (the highest non-Estelle song!) I think, as much as I loved them, the single choices were all wrong. The lead was alright but needed to be followed by "Migrate", instead she went from a fun to really soppy track. Brief opinionz a year on: "Migrate" - Best track, still not bored of it. Stupid to keep it as an album track. "Touch My Body" - A good lead, nice and fund. I've tired of it slightly now, overplayed it. "Cruise Control" - Still quite fun and fresh, haven't overplayed this one. Was a good album track. "I Stay in Love" - The album version is alright but since hearing the Jody den Broeder edit I rarely listen to the original now. "Side Effects" - If she wanted to have a new WBT this would have been better than Bye Bye or ISIL. Still sounds good. "I'm That Chick" - Was originally my favourite track, now it's fun but not the best by any means. "Love Story" - Cute, a bit average for her imo. Filler zone. "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" - Really loved this, got bored quickly, but was reignited when with the Designer Drugs mix. "Last Kiss" - Same situation as "Love Story". This is a bit better than that though. "Thanx 4 Nothin'" - Oddly, this is my second fave track on there. I remember trying to sing this when I was home alone. "O.O.C." - I'm a bit hot and cold on this track. Sometimes I like it, sometimes it seems like a filler. "For the Record" - Another one similar to LS and LK, this is clearly the best of the three for me. Love it. "Bye Bye" - Loved it, but it got a bit stale. It needs some crazy dance remix, though it's not fitting for the song. "I Wish You Well" - Never been keen on this. It's a bit more old school than the rest, but not the good kind. :( "Heat" - The title is a bit contradictory, I've never been hot on it. It's nice and bouncy but doesn't draw me back. "4real4real" - A very good bonus track if you haven't got it off iTunes yet. Has some lines only Mariah could write. So yeah, post new reviews, comments etc. now it's had a year to sink in.
April 17, 200916 yr i didnt buy this album on release as im not into mariahs music since she released butterfly but about 4 montsh ago i got this album for e1 so i said i would give it a go,and im not going to offend anyone but all i will say e1 was more than enough for it
April 17, 200916 yr I skip every single song on this album now :heehee: I'm not sure if that's because I killed it in the first 2 months of having it, playing it ALL the time, or whether I just don't really like it anymore. 'Touch My Body' I can still listen to, and I listened to 'For The Record' the other day too - good songs but just boring to me now :(

Of course she needs to have a current sound if she wants to sell, which is why she can't stick to 90s ballads and covers but this album didn't exactly sell muchin the end. I think the last figure we were given for the USA was something like 1.24 million.

'Touch My Body' I can still listen to, and I listened to 'For The Record' the other day too - good songs but just boring to me now :( I'm basically the same here. It doesn't take that much for me to overplay an album - if I still like a song by 20 listens it's lucky. I feel like I've ruined the album versions of four singles, at least, I can't work out if it's because I've overplayed them or if they're not good enough to have lasting appeal. The album is decent but I'm always drawn to the songs I haven't played as much (except 'Migrate' and 'Thanx 4 Nothin') over the rest. So I'm kinda listening to the ones I don't like as much as I've never got bored of them? Thankfully I'm not a long-running fan and I can always try getting into her old albums more until the next one. I haven't listened to them enough to get bored yet.
April 17, 200916 yr for me i always listen to the old mariah albums i love music box the most and i suppose nowadays its the greatest hits album i listen to i know she cannot stick to the ballads but for me i wish she would as its the only style i enjoy from her with the exception of the fantastic all i want for christmas
April 17, 200916 yr I have 7 songs of the CD on my iPod. You can't really blame the singles for the lack of success, Mariah's co-operation with the era just wasn't v. good. Like Delta Goodrem's effort, promotion stopped after the first single tbh. If I'd have had my way, I'd released: Touch My Body Migrate I'll Be Lovin U Long Time I Stay In Love. In my opinion, Bye Bye was an awful singles choice.
April 17, 200916 yr The album as a whole is actually pretty good. "Bye Bye" was the worst follow-up and killed this era. "Migrate" would've smashed, and everyone knows it. There's conflicting stories of who's to blame it wasn't released. "Side Effects" was a well written song, with a great hook and should've been released. Another favourite is "For the Record" where Mariah delivered a really, really strong vocal. I think "Touch My Body" was a fun track, but shouldn't have been lead single. I understand it was a #1, but it probably shouldn't have been. "I Stay in Love" was a good effort, with a nice melody. It was a rehash of WBT though, and with lack of momentum it was a failure from the start. "I Wish You Well" was a nice close to the album (excluding the Bonus tracks). Soulful, stripped down and sincere. The rest are all OK. The only track I can't stand is "Love Story" becuase it's just so ordinary. Edited April 17, 200916 yr by AAC

I can't say I'm big on ballads. I slightly prefer Mariah now and the 'old school' ones I like best are things like "Emotions", "Fantasy" and "Dreamlover" so not really the ballads/covers. In my opinion, Bye Bye was an awful singles choice. This is true, she did loads for "Touch My Body" a tiny bit for "Bye Bye" and a random promo for "I Stay In Love". I wouldn't have released "I Stay In Love" or "Bye Bye". I'd have gone 'Touch My Body' -> 'Migrate' -> 'Side Effects' -> 'I'll Be Lovin U Long Time'. Maybe swapping the firs two, 'Migrate' suited the USA, TMB was better for us. The album as a whole is actually pretty good. "Bye Bye" was the worst follow-up and killed this era. Who is to blame for it not being released?! :o I think I agree re: 'Touch My Body'. It was a #1 but I think 'Migrate' would have been there for much longer and it could have been released second as an album seller.
April 18, 200916 yr Who is to blame for it not being released?! :o I'd love to know. There are were so many conflicting reports regarding this. It's been reported the label wanted it as the lead, then second, but Mariah wanted "Touch My Body" and "Bye Bye" and vice versa. I wonder if she'll ever address the issue, as the majority of her fans are pretty angry it wasn't released (myself included).

Why would anyone want to release "Bye Bye", it was the most stupid move possible. I'd like her to address it at some point but I just can't see it.
April 21, 200916 yr I still think its amazing, if anything its grown on me since. One of the worst handled projects ive ever seen though.
April 22, 200916 yr Author I still think its amazing, if anything its grown on me since. One of the worst handled projects ive ever seen though. That's good then. :o I think everyone agrees that it was poorly handled. I have to say (at first) I would have probably picked "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" as a single, so that flop came as a surprise to me. Eventually it got boring and only the Designer Drugs remix sounds normal to me now. In retrospect the only worthy single was "Touch My Body". "Migrate" and "Side Effects" stick out as the most logical choices, I hope she doesn't get hung up trying to make another "We Belong Together".
April 23, 200916 yr I hardly listen to it now :( I found it to be such a good album at the time but now i just never listen to it...
April 25, 200916 yr My opinion of this album dropped every week. Leak week - loved it, thought it was better than TEOM. Second week - Still loved, but not quite as good as TEOM. Third week - Bored of most the tracks I initially liked, and only ever pleayed Side Effects, FTR & Migrate Forth week - Yeah this is pretty $h!t now Fifth week - Over the album completely, not her most shining moment. Big let down from TEOM. But after seeing the sales I'm sure shes stepping it up MIMI style next time :D

I'd still put it about on par with TEOM, but that's probably because it's an album I've listened to in retrospect and not something I listened to from 2005-8 while waiting for a new album. I hope she steps it up for the next album, 1.25 in the USA isn't that impressive for her at all, even in the low sales climate. :( I hope for something in between the last two albums. Not 80s covers.
May 3, 200916 yr I still love it, it's filled with songs that remind me of previous Mariah classics for example, I'm That Chick has the same summery feel to songs like Emotions. "Bye Bye" is still my favorite song on the album, even though so many people find it so awful. Migrate, Touch My Body and I'll Be Loving U Long Time are the ones I play most of all. I don't play the album as much I did when I first got it, but it's still nice to hear sometimes. It's probably one of my favorite MC albums as well :o
May 7, 200916 yr Just adding to my first post, i remember having a convo with Jark about it on the day of leak and i can see where he was coming from now. Yes the production is great but overall its just a meh album...
May 9, 200916 yr I'll Be Lovin U Long Time and Side Effects are still amazing songs to me, I dont understand what happened to Lovin U Long Time it was super catchy and should have been a summer smash, it did ok on radio, but downloads were non-existent, i guess Bye Bye is to thank for that...a slush ballad in summer? no thanks! And Side Effects would have been a great single too, shame she chose I Stay In Love instead.
May 9, 200916 yr I really dont like Mariah's newer stuff. Heard this album while on holiday and didnt like it much. There are a couple of good songs such as touch my body, bye bye and I stay in love..these singles are probably closest to her older style but apart from that, it was a largely weak affair.
