anyone see this excellant programme charting life in september 1066? 3 major battles that defined our nation took place in that month, culminating in the norman invasion. this programme (part 2 tonight) gave an insight into life for the ordinary bloke growing up in late saxon england..... fascinating stuff, blood and gore, acurate historical settings and stories taken from real life scources.

brilliant stuff!

They do seem to have essentially based it on 'Lord of the Rings' from the indents to the actual cinematographic nature of it. It's a bit too sensational for my historical tastes.

 it was based on historical FACTS, a very good 'non hollywood' style account of life in autumn 1066... if anything, the lord of the rings was based on these real events and ones like them (there were many). i didnt regard it at all as sensational, it was very graphic, and according to writings from the time, very accurate.

Yes it is based on historical facts but that sense of authenticity doesn't mean it can't be sensationalised and Americanized into a medium I don't favour?

i disagree that its sensationalised and americanised, my m8s on the metal detecting forums (history lovers) have also given it the thumbs up in that department.

It rather IS mate.... Frankly I'm looking at it and almost half expecting Frodo, Aragorn, Gandalf, Gimli and Legolas to turn up....

I really dont see why they felt the need to relate it to Tolkien's LOTR..... And besides, LOTR was more allegorical of WW1 and WW2....

It's seems more docu-drama than anything in a lot of ways, Simon Schama or David Starkey it aint.....

disagree.... it was pure schama/starkey, like they do they drew on facts as recorded by contemporary writers. ok a docu-drama yes, but that was the POINT of it! to give the ordinary blokes view of the conflicts as opposed to the story of harold, which is usually the case.

however, i do agree that there was NO reason to mention 'middle earth'... why? what for?

They could surely do all that without all the LOTRisms though mate...... I was rather just put off the whole affair tbh, I mean, C4 has really dumbed-down its documentary content in the past 5 years or so, almost to Channel 5 depths in some cases, and this is the clearest example of that.... It's so obvious that they're making this with one eye on the American Cable market.... I get the impression that the BBC would have done this a lot better tbh.....
