Hi everyone,

 

I feel I need to make myself clear on my reasons against the spinoff which have been fluttered about the place and why I feel if we have to have this one it should be the last. It's not that I'm desperate to host or anything, quite the contrary, I just think the spin-off isn't necessary right now. The last time we had one it was because the host of the next contest wasn't available; I am available and I think there are a few reasons we should press on with XVII straight away.

 

Secondly, the theme that has been chosen I don't think will work. Half of the voters in the poll didn't want foreign songs; I think when a lot of those people come to vote, there won't be a lot of incentive to listen and vote carefully. We've already established that foreign language songs rarely perform well in the contest and there are a fair few people who've told me that they're going to struggle to sit through twenty or more foreign songs when it comes to the voting...

 

Thirdly, I don't really think the argument that we need a break to find new music holds much credibility; more new music has been leaking over the past month than during the earlier parts of the year, and I really don't think it's a negative if people do have to work a little bit harder to find themselves a song; isn't that what BJSC is all about?

Doing your best to find music that you don't think people have heard or that you think will impress other voters? If it was the case that it was getting harder to find music, that only makes the contest more rewarding as a whole.

 

Please don't think that I'm trying to undermine the mods here. I just enjoy this contest and would like to get on with it, and I get the impression that the majority of participants would much rather have XVII now than wait when there isn't really a need. I understand that the spin-off has already begun, but I don't see why it couldn't be postponed until the next time a winner isn't available to host right away? Just a thought.

I'm in two minds about this, part of me wants to get on with XVII, I've found an amazing entry and don't want to get bored of it, but also there are songs I love which I couldn't really send to regular BJSC's like Erotas for example.

I have no issues with the spin-off and especially it's theme (I really don't get the anti-foreign movement :/ what a terrible way of judging music imo, completely undermines a lot of great artists), however I can agree that this did feel a BIT out of the blue considering we just had one and all. Perhaps too soon. I think since it's already started it'd be unfair to stop it.

 

Still, BJSCXVII isn't that far off at all...confirmation starts later this month right? It's not like it feels ages away.

 

I think it's nice to be able to take a risk with the spinoffs. You can send entries you normally wouldn't send to the actual competition. This was why I hated the UK #10 Spin-off, it was completely boring and pointless. No risk. These songs were already loved. And it's a bit odd to see the HOST of that competition plus someone who was really pushing for it be against a foreign spinoff?

especially the third bit, if you cant think of more than 17 (how many BJSC's there have been?) unique songs then your a bit if a "flop" music fan tbh :/

I'm not fussed either way but I don't care much for the spin-offs just because doing well or badly in one essentially means nothing so it doesn't matter if you put hardly any thought into picking something, because if you DNQ, it really doesn't matter :lol:

 

I can see why some people aren't entering though, I wouldn't have entered a remixes contest and certainly wouldn't enter a comedy songs contest :lol:

That's the thing though - the last spinoff induced mixed feelings. I mean, it went off fairly well but there were lots of complaints then and there is now. I just feel a Spinoff is always bound to only please half the people involved...

Spin off stays from my point of view. This one may 'seem' a bit soon after the last, but it's not too long before the next best of so it sits in-between them quite nicely.

 

Plus, while hunting i found a great new song, and at the end of the day THAT is what this contest is all about.

Last year we had many people stating they were bored of the status quo of the BJSC and so felt something should be brought in to spice it all up. This was met with a fair bit of support but to avoid upsetting people I think the mods at the time decided on a Spin-Off to be done with a theme thus leaving the main contest untouched.

 

For sure it was an experiment and some people decided they were less keen on the idea than others but it was certainly not a failure. And so we have another Spin-Off today which will now be happening no matter what after the huge response we got from people in the decision thread. If this one is not a success and people decide they don't want anymore Spin-Offs after this one that's fine. There ARE people who relish the chance to send something different to the BJSC without facing a backlash in the official contest which is what the Spin-Offs are perfect for.

What I don't understand is; why don't people enter these songs for the normal contests? If there are so many people with foreign songs why don't they just send them to regular BJSCs? They must rate the song enough to send it to one contest and I see why no reason why people would judge it differently whatever contest it has been entered into. Why do we need a completely different contest for people to send these songs?

It is a fact that foreign songs don't do quite as well in BJSCs so people who want to send them may be put off. Similarly it is an area which most British users don't explore very often so some people may have never even thought to send a non-english entry, for those people I'm sure it will be a game full of discoveries.

 

For those who don't wish to participate, it's only a couple of weeks away from the main contest. use that time to find soemthing brilliant for XVII ^_^
