Posted June 22, 200619 yr Do u think Benny Hill is a comedy legend or a Sexist? Personally though he has dated very badly, i find him harmless & his shows are quite amusing in places :) Edited June 22, 200619 yr by Joey Deacon
June 22, 200619 yr Do u think Benny Hill is a comedy legend or a Sexist? probably neither, just a dead bloke.
June 22, 200619 yr well i lived through the 'benny hill' era, and tbh i couldnt stand him! i found that on the few occassions that he was funny, he ruined the joke by over stating it, as if the audience were complete morons.. mind you.. lol he was sexist, but so were carry on films and really all he did was follow in the bawdy sea-side humour that prevailed post war. with the cultural explosion that was punk, these old ideals of seeing women merely as sex objects was kicked out. (and yes, pre-punk women were seen as second class citizens, sex objects, cooks, and fair game for comedic purposes) benny hill had to go.
June 22, 200619 yr with the cultural explosion that was punk, these old ideals of seeing women merely as sex objects was kicked out. (and yes, pre-punk women were seen as second class citizens, sex objects, cooks, and fair game for comedic purposes) benny hill had to go. was it really due to punk? it thought it was due to a slightly early women's liberation movement. even carry on girls had feminists in it and that was about 73. carry on had been bollocked by the even ruder confessions and George Harrison Marks's come play with me by time of punk
June 22, 200619 yr no not due entirely to punk, but the punk generation embraced the new way of thinking.... it brought political correctness to the new youth movement. punk championed equality for women, gay people and black people. all of which were routinely lambasted for comedic purposes prior to punk. sexism, porn, benny hill and harrison marks belonged firmly to the pre-punk ideology. womens rights was gaining momentum, but was still seen as a joke. punk itself was a whole new way of thinking and gave rise to 'alternative comedy' which soon kicked out racist, sexist and homophobic views that had preceeded punk.
June 22, 200619 yr Not a fan - he belongs to the Gary Bushells of this world - neanderthal middle aged men who like a bit of skirt. Giove me Dick Emery and Les Dawson any day.....
June 23, 200619 yr did anyone see that show on bbc 4 that said Vic and Bob were the most important comedians in modern comedy and were the pivitol moment for a marked change in the comedy spectrum?
June 23, 200619 yr nope............. but i just cant see that. vic n bob were funny enough, but i certainly wouldnt credit them as being that important. i thought their style of comedy was just updating material like kenny everet, monty python, even spike milligan had all touched on.
June 23, 200619 yr Vic and Bob?   err... I'd ignore that if I were you - as Rob says, Spike Milligan patented that madcap style decades before them. I'm laughing as I write this... yes, Vic and Bob were funny enough at times... but life changing comedy? Oh my....

I'm laughing as I write this... yes, Vic and Bob were funny enough at times... but life changing comedy? Oh my.... the show was about how every wave of comedy was a reaction to the past for example the alternative comedy people being a reaction to those workingmans / wheelbarrow and foottappers club (something like that) comedians. however vic and bob were the first of the post-modern generation of comedians and all types of comedy influences are cool now whether it be working men's style from the 1970s blended by surrealism of monty python and the goons and the stuff of the alt com folk.
June 23, 200619 yr I remember seeing a program on Benny Hill and he died a broken man, he couldn't accept that the public no longer liked his brand of comedy. All his money dissappeared in suspicious circumstances and he was almost poor when he died. His downfall was not to move with the times, but he believed his comedy was correct and refused to change. When his TV show was axed he couldn't come to terms with it. In the 60's and 70's however his shows were almost as popular as Morcambe and Wise. Just goes to show what the public liked 30 years ago. <_<
