June 16, 200916 yr Author Nice little mention of our man in this IOW review - barrier breaking stuff:  That mystery is also sought (and found) by Mercury Rev's Jonathan Donahue as he mixes effeminate fragility and bombast in singing about love lost. He is followed, with odd appropriateness, by Will Young. As White Lies go through their polite, gloomy routines elsewhere, Young is unmistakably and graciously gay, skipping in a sunflower straw hat and singing with light soulfulness. It's nice to think of his and Mercury Rev's crowds crossing over. Young's charismatic crowd-pleasing can't be matched by Razorlight's Johnny Borrell. He tries hard, but only "America"'s simple, unreached ambition escapes his studied rock star pose. Saturday's headliners, Stereophonics, carry resentful petulance from when Kelly Jones was, as his good old song says, "Just Looking". There's rough grit in the tunes, and in Jones's red-lit, glowering face, balancing out a grudging dourness. http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertai...rt-1705909.html
June 16, 200916 yr Nice little mention of our man in this IOW review - barrier breaking stuff:  http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertai...rt-1705909.html I agree munchkin. Put him performing alongside the so called 'cool' artists & he outshines them all, both vocally & in stage presence.. Love that his talent is being singled out & praised at the festivals. :yahoo: I know that he loves the vibe on the smaller stages but I wonder if we will ever see him performing on the main stage. His talent definitely deserves it. He's come along way since he was described as being like a vicar on the early pop idol tours. :P Edited June 16, 200916 yr by truly talented
June 16, 200916 yr Author There was some moans about the Big Top at IOW being too small for the bands that were featured - so who knows what next year will bring. We may even get to see his live set on the TV!!!!! :P The Big Top - a joke in the name itself The "big top" or should I say "totally inadequate top" was far too small for artists such as:- The charlatans, Will Young (not to my taste), calvin harris & more - they would have been better on the main stage There was a distinct lack of snidy criticism this year too - hallelujah!! We may even get to see his live set on the TV!!!!! :P There was a distinct lack of snidy criticism this year too - hallelujah!! That's the main reason I want him to perform on the main stages. I know they are more impersonal but they increase the chance of some of his set being shown on tv. Some of the smaller stages such as Glastonbury aren't even filmed so all we ever get are acoustic performances. I don't suppose Guilfest is shown on tv? Edited June 16, 200916 yr by truly talented
June 18, 200916 yr Author This is a good one: Thanks to Griff on D for finding this: "I’m not a middle-aged woman, I’m not a young girl, and I’m not gay. None the less I went to see Will Young, who proved to be a masterful showman, interacting well with his audience and belting out some clearly sung tunes. Worht a repeat visit if he ever shows again." :P http://orun.wordpress.com/2009/06/14/will-...-festival-2009/ Edited June 18, 200916 yr by munchkin
June 18, 200916 yr From the festival organiser. What do you think are the main things that people will take away from the event this year? I think they are going to remember the sun, the headliners performances and how good certain acts were in the in the Big Top – like Will Young, 15,000 people watching Will Young. McFly were incredible! And the other thing is the element of surprise – you just walk past the acoustic stage and someone comes on. Also, people enjoy coming here because it's known as the friendly festival. http://www.efestivals.co.uk/festivals/iow/...giddings2.shtml The feedback just keeps getting better & better. :yahoo: Edited June 18, 200916 yr by truly talented
June 18, 200916 yr Author Thanks TT - noticed this comment by him too: Have you enjoyed the Isle of Wight (IOW) Festival? I always enjoy myself. I think it's fantastic to see the bands that you love. The Stereophonics were phenomenal last night. Kelly Jones can just project so well. He can control an audience. He can perform to an audience. The thing about the bands we book is its not about how many records they have sold this year, or what position they are in the chart, it's about whether your capable of projecting and entertaining an audience. Will has been doing this for 7 years! It's just taken them a bit longer to take off the blinkers and see. :P Absolutely chuffed for him. It's been long overdue.

June 19, 200916 yr I have bought the County Press and there are a couple of nice pieces about Will. I will scan and post the picture later. The Big Top went pop quite literally on Saturday when thousands upon thousands of fans piled in to see Will Young and McFly. In a set full of crowd interaction, Will Young played hit after hit and provided plenty of entertainment along the way The award winners are... The CP award for best quote of the weekend goes to Will Young who, while launching his trilby hat into the crowd, said: "Ioh, I feel like I'm throwing a bouquet at a wedding." Following on from that, I spoke to my neighbour who was, until recently, a councillor. She said that there were thousands and thousands of people making their way to the festival on Saturday evening, on both sides of the river, just to see Will. She saw him and he was fantastic. Then I met an old friend I hadn't seen for ages. She went and she said that Will was easily the best there. Her daughter is a mad fan but doesn't know about the websites despite being on the Internet. She also said that Neil Young was dreadful and that the crowd had all but disappeared when he came on. Interesting, isn't it?
