My favorite is the Black Crowes and I feel like they are a classic example of an all-american band... This is a you tube video of their concert not too long ago
and I think once you see this you'll agree with me... They just put on a good show and keep their style of music real- not letting pop and other styles of music like that influence them. I came across this video and bought the DVD http://bit.ly/BlackCrowesFYE on my way to work today because I just think that they rock... What do you think?

Of all time? Imo, the Great Rock & Roll American Band; Aerosmith. Well, their 70's stuff anyway. 80's material became pretty poor, until the late 80's/early 90's re-inventing themselves for the MTV generation, until their last album (a cover of old blues numbers, it's amazing).

Aerosmith

Lynyrd Skynyrd

ZZ Top

38 Special

Molly Hatchett

Silver Bullet Band/Bob Seger

Black Crowes

George Thorogood and the Destroyers

CCR

Guns N Roses

Elf

Metallica

Ramones

Steppenwolf

^^ I think you should add Nirvana to that list tbh... Like them or not, in that period 91-94 they captured the mood of the times perfectly, and inadvertently created a Zeitgeist, which isn't really what Kurt intended (he just wanted to play kick ass punk rock..),he was a reluctant rock star, but the times kind of called for a rock star who was reluctant after the exess of the 80s, it was a case of someone having greatness thrust upon him, even if he didn't want it...

Capturing a mood is surely what all the true greats do....

They were personal preferences really out of my collection whereas I only have 2 Nirvana songs, wasn't a massive fan tbh

Without doubt it is Bon Jovi all the way for me

Bon Jovi just ripped off every good idea that Whitesnake or Aerosmith ever had though..... They sold records, but I wouldn't say that BJ were one of the "greats"....

With Bon Jovi, songs like Livin' On A Prayer, Always.. hideous as they where  , I don't mind them. :heehee: But they're not a band that I'd personally want to look deeper into and search out material to listen to.
I would say that if you're going to pick the band which sort of defined 80s "Hair Metal", it really has to be Motley Crue.... Absolutely nobody defines the excess of that era more than The 'Crue, IMO......

Guns N' Roses

Metallica

Megadeth

I absolutely love these three bands. GNR put an end to hair-metal, whilst Metallica and Megadeth ushered in the thrash genre. Love it!

Actually, it's something of a myth that... The likes of Slayer were way more extreme... I've never really been convinced that "Kill Em All" was all that much of an extreme/thrash record....

You also forget about Anthrax...

All these guys started operating round about the same time - Slayer/Anthrax/Metallica all formed in '81....

  • 2 weeks later...

Loads of the bands stated above as well as...

Kyuss/QOTSA

Mudhoney

The Stooges

Soundgarden

Alice in Chains

Jane's Addiction

Ministry

I think you can if you see them as a continuation of what Kyuss started.

Kyuss basically kickstarted the whole desert rock/stoner rock/call it what you will scene.

Blues For The Red Sun and Welcome to Sky Valley are immense records.

Dont forget about Wino/The Obsessed/Spirit Caravan though......

QOtSA are a bloody good band, no question.. But can we actually class them as "All Time Greats" quite just yet.....?

well maybe not in terms of overall greatness, but they are MY fav

They probably will be regarded as all-time greats in years to come though... There's other good 'Stoner Rock' bands as well, The Obsessed and Spirit Caravan are great bands too, Orange Goblin are alright as well...

The likes of QoTSA, Obsessed, etc, really understand The Blues I reckon....
