July 5, 200916 yr imo She's one of the worst pop acts this year.. I don't find any of her songs good at all, bar In For The Kill which is average at best.
July 5, 200916 yr And she doesn't really make her point clear. There's hardly such thing as R&B anymore  , it's labelled contemporary R&B..
July 5, 200916 yr If she really thinks she's so good and that the music will "sell itself", why is she going out of her way to make deliberately 'controversial' comments to get her name in the headlines, what with implying abused women bring it on themselves and are 'twats'. What an idiot, Lily was doing much the same thing when she started out. La Roux (or Elly herself) really is pretty much style over substance, I don't like most of her music as it is but it's clear she's a completely detestable person too. Bugger off.
July 5, 200916 yr I wish she'd shut up, she's got all these ideas on how the world of music should be even though some of her music makes you want to rip your ears off. And the R&B style may be "so nineties" but at least they're not sounding like a 1980's tribute band to Human League Edited July 5, 200916 yr by Spiral
July 6, 200916 yr Why should she? Why shouldn't she give her opinion? People have a right to express and say if they think. If she's asked a question why avoid answering it/sugarcoat it with a generic "nicey" response. I don't necessarily agree with her but I don't think she should "shut up" or is a "cünt" because she says what she believes in. If anything it's refreshing to see a popstar who's properly 3D. Someone who isn't boobs and a miniskirt. She uses her music to sell her product not sex or blonde hair. She's the antithesis of what is convential pop and to have made it so big whilst failing to sacrifice who she obviously is makes her in my eyes, nothing short of fantastic. Exactly. Seems like everyone wants celebrities/artists to be fake and all goody-two-shoes, as soon as something negative is said like Elly's opinion on R&B everyone jumps to conclusions as her as a person... "oh now I hate La Roux cause she insulted R&B music".. I mean talk about predictable immaturity. La Roux and Lady GaGa are prime examples of how to make it big in the industry and their opinions surrounding music are much more credible than ours so if you want to call Elly or GaGa knobs and say they talk $h!t then at least back up your opinion and try making it huge in the music industry yourself. . I'd honestly prefer buying a La Roux/Lady GaGa/Lily Allen album, watch a La Roux/Lady GaGa/Lily Allen concert or interview over some completely 2D, dull and generic artists like Agnes or Taylor Swift and it's no wonder the former 3 are so much more popular than the latter 3 atm. And if people call Keri Hilson's "Knock You Down" quality R&B then I completely agree with La Roux; although I think there are some few examples of quality R&B around that she's yet to hear of, such as Jazmine Sullivan and Melanie Fiona. But looking at the current R&B music scene/charts, her opinion completely makes sense to me and I'm looking at this at different angles unlike most of the predictable one-sided opinions that's already been posted in here. .

Im all for people giving their opinion but when its as uneducated, overgeneralised and filled with bull$h!t as this one, she needs to go. I mean the same happens in every genre, so why attack RnB? There are still quality singers lke Jazmine, Jojo etc, it's just that they're not as big as the beyonces of this world. And it's not as if her music is some amazing genius as some people say it is. Seriously, a lot of the lyrics are lame and predictable rhymes that one could make up in a poem in year 4 at school, and some of the accompanying music is laughable to be honest. She obviously made these quotes with the idea in her head that she is the complete opposite of that, which is just pretentious. Especially as 90% of the genre would vocally blow her and her average voice out of the water.
July 6, 200916 yr Look at this quote...jeez: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/musicblog/...women-beaten-up She's not the first female celeb to say stuff like this though.... Frankly, she needs a few lessons on the basics of Feminism...... Sure, some women might do some pretty stupid sh!t when they go out, but that hardly means they deserve to be beaten up or raped..... Being stupid aint against the law... Good thing for Elly it's not, or she'd be banged up for talking such blatant bollocks as she does in that quote..... What she should be targetting on is the Fashion Industry which uses coercive and manipulative tactics to put these women in miniskirts and tanktops.... And, unsurprisingly, the Fashion Industry is run mainly by.....MEN..... As is over 90% of the media, music and advertising Industries.... So, Ellie dear, it's not women being "tw@ts", it's Patriarchy, go and read up on your Germaine Greer or Camille Paglia some time..... Cant really argue with her over R&B though, as a genre, it IS somewhat empty and soul-less.... Frankly, I have no time for it....
July 6, 200916 yr Seems like everyone wants celebrities/artists to be fake and all goody-two-shoes, as soon as something negative is said like Elly's opinion on R&B everyone jumps to conclusions as her as a person... "oh now I hate La Roux cause she insulted R&B music"... Pretty much sums it up perfectly.

"oh now I hate La Roux cause she insulted R&B music".. Personally, I think it's her quotes about women in short skirts somehow 'deserving' to be beaten up that kind of make her ignorant and full of sh"t as opposed to her opinions on R&B, which are merely her opinion on a genre of music.... I dont think pig-sh!t ignorance makes an artist particularly "colourful" or "individual", it just makes them appear to be just talking sh!te for the sake of a couple of column inches in a rag, and give the appearance of being "oh-so-shocking" just for the sake of it....

Exactly. I couldn't give a damn what she said about R&B, it's deliberately 'controversial' comments like those to try and get her name in the headlines. I don't really have a problem with people making such outlandish statements if I feel they have the music to back up their motormouth, but I really don't think she/they does.
July 7, 200916 yr Exactly. I couldn't give a damn what she said about R&B, it's deliberately 'controversial' comments like those to try and get her name in the headlines. I don't really have a problem with people making such outlandish statements if I feel they have the music to back up their motormouth, but I really don't think she/they does. Just imagine a male pop star saying that.... He'd be absolutely crucified in every quarter of the media..... I cant believe that the interviewer didn't actually challenge Elly on that statement... Unless they just wanted to give her enough rope to hang herself of course......
July 7, 200916 yr Wow it seems she doesn't understand her own species  A lot of the time women dress up like that for OTHER WOMEN and dressing up in a short skirt will attract a lot of people dickheads and 'nice' men. The trouble with girls is that 'nice' men are very boring to them because it's too easy to get them to like them and so there's no challenge or mystery! Anyway I think most of these statements she's apparently said are very ignorant and maybe she should listen to more than just mainstream R&B imo because that ain't the same as the commercial stuff.
July 7, 200916 yr The trouble with girls is that 'nice' men are very boring to them because it's too easy to get them to like them and so there's no challenge or mystery! Yeah, at worst, some girls (and guys too, because there is a certain type of bloke who likes extremely "evil", toxic women who completely fukk them over, I've got a mate like that who just seems to attract these sorts of "bunny boiler" types like a frikkin' magnet  ..) are just contradictory, which is certainly NOT the same thing as saying the sort of nonsense that Elly is.... Women, by and large, all say "why cant I just meet a nice guy...?", and when they actually do, they try to change him or complain that they're "too nice"..... It's also a fact that some women dress the way they do to out-do other women, not particularly because they're looking to attract a male, but more to make other women feel jealous.... But of course, this competition aspect, I feel, is another by-product of the Fashion industry....
July 7, 200916 yr I think she needs to learn that people aren't all that interested in what she has to say. It annoys me when people label her an 'innovator' when she's re-hashing a sound from twenty years ago essentially. As for condemning the whole genre of RnB, that's so small minded! I'm not a massive fan of RnB but it has its place, to condemn a genre is such a blanket generalisation and in this case, using only main-stream RnB music. Edited July 7, 200916 yr by seejayjee
July 7, 200916 yr I'm not a massive fan of RnB but it has its place, Yeah, to be fair, it probably does have its place... But, speaking personally, not in my record collection..... The original R and B - ie Rhythm and Blues, however, does.... ;)
July 9, 200916 yr I'm sure this girl is just bitter that she will never be a sexy R&B star, and will always have to split her profits with a dude who doesn't have to do endless photoshoots and interviews.
July 9, 200916 yr I'm sure this girl is just bitter that she will never be a sexy R&B star, and will always have to split her profits with a dude who doesn't have to do endless photoshoots and interviews. You mean the "dude who probably writes most of the music...."? I would imagine that the songwriting splits at Elly doing lyrics, Ben doing the music..... Given what some of their lyrics are like, I think the music takes a lot more time and effort to write...... Seems to me like La Roux want to be the "new Goldfrapp" or summat.... Not exactly working out for them is it....?
July 9, 200916 yr You mean the "dude who probably writes most of the music...."? I would imagine that the songwriting splits at Elly doing lyrics, Ben doing the music..... Given what some of their lyrics are like, I think the music takes a lot more time and effort to write...... For a songwriter, writing music that sells very well is the dream. Having to make stupid comments/inviting people to hate you by making "controversial" and "edgy" statements in interviews, however, is not a dream come true. The guy does the music, the girl does the rest.
July 9, 200916 yr The guy does the music, the girl does the rest. That's a tad unfair tbh... If you look at the album writing and production credits, it's both names on there.... She IS contributing to the writing, but I would say lyrics only.... And production seems to be totally 50/50 Elly/Ben.... So, although, yeah, she's got a big mouth and talks bollocks a lot of the times, that's hardly her only contribution to the group..... And, at least La Roux actually DO write and produce their own albums, which is more than can be said for the vast majority of Pop acts....
July 9, 200916 yr That's a tad unfair tbh... My music I meant the music. The lyrics aren't exactly complex, deep... or even fun!
