I have played around with a couple of free Antivirus packages this weekend and my favourite one is AVAST Home Edition.

I installed it yesterday and not long after a friend sent me a link on facebook. When I clicked on it AVAST popped up to warn me it was a virus and said don't worry just click close connection and you won't get the virus.

It also warned me of a trojan on a site I clicked on today.

If anyone wants to download it here's the link

A couple of tips if you do decide to go for this one.

It will automatically do a boot scan, which slows down the start up. If you want to avoid this - right click on the little icon (blue ball with a a) on the bottom right of the screen and click on program settings. Remove the tick on - Test memory during application start-up.

To ensure you get automatic updates of the virus database, in the program settings go to update (connections) and tick my computer is permanently connected to the internet.

Click on the shortcut icon on your desktop. It gives you an ugly control panel like a car radio. To change it - click on the up arrow in the top left hand corner, then select skin and choose the second one.

When you want to run the scan, there are several ways of doing so. The easiest way from that control panel is to click on menu (top left) and click on start scan and select what drives you want scanned.

Any other questions give me a shout.

Thanks, No

ina. I've only just got avg9 so I may leve it for a while. I'll keep the link and change over when I have a little more time.

You will need to register and get a registration key but that's easy to do. I have now got it installed on my four computers.

Stick with AVG if you are happy with it.

Thanks, Nina, for the instructions.

I've only just sorted out AVG 9 so I'll keep that for now. Can't face the trauma of changing !

Nina, you mentioned an automatic boot scan which slows down initialisinng the computer.

Is this also on AVG 9 and if so how do I cancel it ?

I haven't used AVG for a while but apparently it does do a scan on boot up.

Searching the internet, one way of stopping this is as follows:

On the main page, on the column on the left, click on 'scheduler' then double left click on 'test plan in basic mode' and untick the boxes for 'periodically start scheduled antivirus test' and 'if missed start immediately when computer start up' (although this one should cancel when you untick the first one. Now the column you double clicked on should read 'task is disabled' in the 'next start' column.

I can't test it out but hope that helps.

lol, I just google

I'm no expert

I am hoping that Meg's computer is playing up, and that it's not something more serious.

Not like her to stop posting. Hope all is well, Meg.

To me marriage is a final commitment but over the last 10-15years it doesn't seem to make much difference to most couples.

How's this for a crazy Bonfire Night celebration.

Around 2000 people gathered at Ilfracombe Rugby Club to stare at a 16 x 12 ft screen showing film of a

bonfire, whilst speakers broadcast the sound of crackling wood and heaters warmed the revellers.

The 'virtual' bonfire was considered safer than a real one !!!

very different.

I know the safety aspect is increasing all the time.

Our village holds a huge firework display and is done by volunteers....it started 30+years ago and each years proceeds pays for the next year.

They have to do all the training on pyrotechnics and driving vans with explosives.

The rules on storing the fireworks have changed and they have to rent a container on a farm well away from anything.

All safety clothing etc comes out of the money.

But they always manage to pull off a fantastic display.....better....in a lot of peoples views than the free council one over Lancaster castle.

But even with all the helpers and safety precautions there has been the odd accident...a stray firework, one exploding too soon......I find it all very worrying and tend not to go as my son and husband help light them.....I can't wait for it to be over.

It was very quiet round here, not as many fireworks as last year. Perhaps the bad weather had something to do with it or perhaps it will be worse tonight and over the weekend.

On another subject Ron has decided he's going to build the new run of wardrobes in the back bedroom himself  and I so wanted everything finished by Christmas!!!! Sue

And you're prepared to trust him after the plaster incident ?

At least he's ready to have a go. Have you sorted a plumber out yet ?

Our big council display was fireworks only this year, no bonfire.

There's quite a lot of behind the scenes work then Pam. At least your three new pets won't be upset by

the bangs, but I bet you have to sit with your two dogs. My daughter's dog is terrified.

My dogs aren't too bad.

My daughters dog is terrible they have to sedate him for weeks over this period.

She lives just outside Birmingham and they start weeks before and continue till New Year

Talking about my fish I'd better feed them.

I'm in the middle of packing.

My suitcase is full of Stuarts things including Christmas presents....I've squished my few bits on top and the rest will have to go in hand luggage.

I'm hoping to buy some jumpers and thick socks whilst I'm there so I'm not taking much.

He texted me last night to say he had Wednesday off and when I phoned him back I was told off for not being asleep

Who wouldn't wake up to Darius singing 'Mystery of you'!

I'm sure you'll have a great time Pam.

We're still waiting for estimates from the last two plumbers. It's as if they don't want the work. :( Sue
