the genre evolves and spreads its wings.

It didn't "evolve" though, quite the opposite, imo.... It just led to a bunch of marketing people coming in and trying to palm their sh!tty Europap acts by giving them an edgier-sounding label because no one wanted to buy "Eurobeat/Europop", the same way that the term "Britpop" fell out of favour and a lot of these naturally "Britpop" bands (such as Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs, Kooks, etc,) suddenly became described as "indie" by the media, because it was cooler, and more edgy-sounding than "Britpop"..... Too many people saw "Trance" as a license to print money, and when this happens, the music, on the whole, always suffers, despite the few genuinely good acts that are around, happened with Emo, happened with Indie, happened with Nu Metal....

I think its picking up again, the 2003-2007 years were pitiful for trance, and the trance clubs in Ibiza. We're seeing trance dj's finally going back to producing trance after going all electro, and there have been some great trance songs released in the past 2 years. Its unlikely it'll reach the success and quality level of a decade ago, but at least its improving imo.

Here its where our opinions differ. The genre becoming more versatile, diverse, and branching out brings good and bad things, like all genres. For me, and obviously Jarvis too, the genre evolving brought out euphoric trance, amongst other not so good things, but i'm glad it did because imo without it evolving and growing, the best trance genre wouldnt have existed. Obviously there were many cash-ins on the popularity of trance, but it didnt stop the many quality songs from coming out in that period.

but it DID evolve, ok the commercial pop end wasnt exactly great stuff (though alot of it was ok, as pop/europop), but without the evolution there would be no binary finery, no veracocha, no agnelli & nelson, solar stone, rank 1, thrillseekers, etc etc etc.

and actually, we keep refering to ATB under the assumption that he only did 9pm till i come... this is grossly inaccurate as atb HAS done some great real trance tracks....

The commerical Trance bubble bursting might be a good thing (in much the same way that the Nu Metal bubble burst several years back, which pretty much sorted out the men from the boys, the Metal genre, as a whole, is all the better now for ridding itself of the chaff).... At least with all the sh!t moving away to describe itself as something else, it may leave the more "hardcore" acts behind that might actually want to do something interesting.....

Thank you! That's what i've been trying to say. And word on ATB. Even though I liked 9pm, its unfair to judge him based solely on his UK hits.

tbh i dont care about the commercial side of it, as the genre isnt judged on that alone. the commercial side is merely a consequence of its popularity.

i dont judge punk on 'something else', i dont judge early 70's rock on 'silver machine', etc

without the evolution there would be no binary finery, no veracocha, no agnelli & nelson, solar stone, rank 1, thrillseekers, etc etc etc.

Nah, they would've likely happened anyway, same for Infected Mushroom and the like..... The 'real deal' always stick to their guns.. These were the guys more likely influenced by the good Trance Techno acts, not the "$h!tty-eurobeat-wearing-ill-fitting-Trance clothes-to-shift-units" brigade....

That's true, its usually in times of unpopularity that we see which artists are actually fans of the genre. There were vary few doing great trance music a couple of years ago, like Oceanlab aka Above & Beyond, but we're currently seeing more artists, especially unknown or debuting artists starting to produce the genre again, with a very high quality standard. If music does indeed go in cycles, its inevitable that it might repeak in popularity, although looking back at the history of music, the genres resurface always with a different twist, never sounding exactly like the genre they're supposed to.

But them happening or "likely happening" is or "would be" the genre evolving. You cant say Rank 1 or Thrillseekers sounds like Shamen or FSOL. Its an evolution, and with branching out growing different ways, a genre is bound to produce good and bad stuff (even though different people might disagree on which is which).

yeah m8, but thats what we are saying. the commercial pap is a consequence of its evolution/popularity and im sure that the likes of infected mushroom, nathan fake, capetown etc draw their inspiration of real trance. i dont think anyone is saying that alice dee jay was their influence!

yeah, me n clare were looking at going to the white isle in a couple of weeks, but the apparent lack of real trance in the clubs makes it far less appealing.

Yeah, that record is definitely more trance inspired than the other stuff I knew from them (and disliked). What was the first trance song ever, was it Age of Love in 1990?

I probably should've been more specific, or explained it better... When I said Trance "devolved", I was really talking about all the chancers and bandwagon jumpers, of which there were so many, that they unfortunately dominated the genre, while the better stuff kind of got overlooked by comparison, whereas before the more "way out" stuff was higher profile...

ugh I hated the rock acts invading Ibiza. Of course Radio 1 were all bumming their ever so loved "indie-rock" acts performing on Ibeefa, and saying how the island was changing and how it was no longer a dance mecca. I guess to a certain point they are right, but I still dont have to like it. Although Ibiza was never just trance, other dance genres were well represented in various clubs, especially house. But at least its a sister genre, rock-pop is just too random.

Dude, I wouldn't go to Ibiza if you paid me.... I can easily stay at home and watch a bunch of complete mongs make an arse of themselves in the West End or Camden..... :P  I honestly dont know where the real clubbers are going nowadays..... Used to be that Goa was a good place about a decade or so back, er, not anymore.....

Recently, I went out to Berlin with some mates, that was good.... But, we were more going round the Goth/Industrial/EBM/Harsh Techno places......
