An American folk/folk-rock singer turns 50 today. Who could it be? :o I'm listening to her now.

Hints:

She was born in Santa Monica, California.

She wrote a very well-known song about child abuse.

She has a song with the word "Diner" in the title.

Her first album came out in 1985.

Her latest album was released in 2007.

She studied dance.

One of her album covers has her holding a green apple, as it appears.

Who am I talking about? ;)

Ok, she has a song called "Tom's Diner"

In her child abuse song, she sings "if you hear something late at night, some kind of trouble, some kind of fight, just don't ask me what it was"

That will be Suzanne Vega then.

Congratulations, you are correct! :cheer:

Personally, I think Tom Diner is one of (if not the) worst things she ever did:

Here are 5 of my favourite songs of hers:

Suzanne Vega - Solitude Standing

Suzanne Vega - Marlene On The Wall

Suzanne Vega - The Queen and The Soldier

Suzanne Vega - In Liverpool

Suzanne Vega - No Cheap Thrill

"Marlene On The Wall" is amazing, one of my favourites too.

Also, "Soap And Water" is another favourite.

'Small Blue Thing' is my favourite Vega track.... and the whole of the first 2 albums are prettyy much faultless.

I saw her live once and, has to be said, it was the worst gig I've ever seen (and I've seen Madonna a few times so that's saying something)..... Suzanne Vega had all the stage presence of a bag of crisps.... sang nicely but not brilliantly, hardly spoke, and looked like she'd much rather be back home reading feminist poetry and eating lentils.

By the end of the show, only half of the audience was left... everyone else had given up and retreated to the bar....

The Tom's Diner dance remake (awful) was made by a record company rep who used to come into the shop I worked in.... can't remember his name now... but after the song was a hit we never ever saw him again. Ashamed, I suppose....

To be fair Russ, what were you expecting... Suzanne to play guitar with her teeth, do star jumps off the monitors, or set her guitar on fire.....

Well... I was expecting at least a nipple-flashing conical bra, some spitting into the first row and some lascivious crotch-grabbing during Marlene On The Wall, it has to be said.... :P

I saw Suzanne Vega live yesterday!!

@russt68:

She was brilliant live! She also introduced every song to the audience and performed two songs at the encore

Suzanne is not Madonna... :P

And by the way: the original Tom's Diner song is an acapella song (just vocals)

The dance version was made by DNA

From Wikipedia:

The a cappella "Tom's Diner" was later a hit again, remixed by two British dance producers under the name DNA, in 1990. Originally a bootleg, Vega allowed DNA to release the track through her record company, and it became her all-time biggest hit.
