Posted July 12, 200915 yr Coming hot on the heels of the fantastic, award-winning and incredibly intelligent and thought-provoking sci fi masterpiece Battlestar Galactica, we have Caprica.... Caprica is a prequel set 50 years before the events of the Cylon apocalypse unleashed upon the 12 worlds... The show features an inventor, played by Eric Stoltz who has basically created the prototype for the Cylon Centurions, unfortunately he cannot seem to get it to function properly... Then his daughter dies in a suicide bomb attack on a train, and it turns out she's downloaded her personality onto an icon within a vast computer VR system a bit like "Second Life"... The inventor then decides to download her personality from the AI and into the Cylon prototype... The pilot "film" for this show (coming up sometime in the new year) is out on the Net already, and upon first viewing, there is a lot of scope here for how the show can develop, and with the whole religious aspect as well (Monotheism - the One 'True God', as practiced by the "extremists", and the Cylons in the original show, and Polytheism - based around the Greek and Roman gods, which is the established religious order) one can see parallels with what's going on in our own world today with regards to the War on Terror and Jihadism.... Add into this the Cylons themselves, a slave race created to serve human masters and their eventual rebellion, one can see that this is incredibly well thought out, plausible Science Fiction which relates to our own world even though Caprica is a different world.... I think the intent of the makers of this show is to really hypothesize how our world might have been had we stayed following the Greek/Roman gods... Obviously it helps if you've seen BSG, (and really, if you haven't you should, it frankly knocks spots off of about 99.9% of other Sci Fi shows and is arguably the greatest Sci Fi show ever made, certainly the best sci fi show since Babylon 5, IMO....), but Caprica I feel should be of interest even to new viewers also...
July 13, 200915 yr Author No one got any love for Caprica then.....? Come on guys, stop obsessing over Dr Who/Torchwood for 90 minutes, download it, and check it out......
May 8, 201015 yr Has anyone else been seeing the spin-off series from Battlestar Galactica, surprised there isn't any topic for it. Its different from the normal space shoot 'em ups, its more like a hard edge space soap drama without it been too flashy. I love the virtual reality to it. Renewal for a second series is looking pretty shaky at the moment, I just hope it gets picked up and doesn't fall at the last hurdle, as I really like the spin off series. There is also plans for a third series, based on the original series for the BG franchise.
May 8, 201015 yr I was going to make this after I watched the pilot, but forgot, thanks for making it M!key :D I really hope it does get renewed, SyFy seems committed to Caprica according to this article http://www.capricatimes.com/renewal-rumor-...er-bsg-spin-off BSG has been a profitable series for them, and despite low ratings they seem eager for it to continue on top of creating further spin offs. Although admittedly, it's getting more and more bleak as time goes on. That being said, the universe they have created is extremely rich, and even if Caprica is cancelled, I can see them trying again. I've only seen the pilot and thought it was excellent. It was extremely well directed, acted and scored and it made you think. I loved when at the end, Young Will and his father hugged, and the "Adama family" music motif came back. I thought that was a nice touch. Looking solid and can't wait until I get time to catch up. I doubt it will better BSG though, which is my second favourite televison series of all time, but it helps to fill the void and add further layers to an already incredible universe. May 8, 201015 yr I watched the pilot and it didn't really have the feel that BSG had. Not sure if I'll watch this series, but who knows... To be fair, they are two different types of show, and it's clear they are trying to give this a different look/feel. Either way it was never going to better or match BSG, but it is better than nothing, and just from the pilot, it blows other sci-fi shows that have come out this year, like the awful Flashforward, right out of the water. But from what I've heard the show has a shaky start but gets significantly better as it goes along. Critics also seem to love this show. And considering I thought the pilot was terrific, I can only imagine how good it does eventually get. Edited May 8, 201015 yr by Daniel Gleek
May 8, 201015 yr By the way, for anyone reading this and is interested in what the show is about, here a synopsis, followed by three promos and four posters; "An astonishing breakthrough is taking shape on the planet Caprica. The rapidly evolving spheres of human and mechanical engineering have collided, along with the fates of two families. Joined by tragedy in an explosive instant of terror, two rival clans led by powerful patriarchs, Joseph Adama (Esai Morales) and Daniel Greystone (Eric Stoltz) duel in an era of questionable ethics, corporate machinations and unbridled personal ambition as the final war for humanity looms. The latest phenomenon from the executive producers of Battlestar Galactica (Ronald D. Moore and David Eick), set in a time over 50 years earlier, Caprica is entirely its own world - provocative, thrilling and startling relevant to our own." May 12, 201015 yr I wanted to watch it a couple of months ago but c(ouldn't)ba all the time :( Is it okay to watch it if you haven't seen Battlestar Galaktika? Yes, as this is a whole new story and centers around new characters (however the boy in it, is a younger version of the main character in Battlestar Galactica) and is set before BSG. The only thing is, you might miss some in-jokes and it might take you a bit longer to understand the world of Caprica than had you watched Battlestar, but don't let that put you off, as the same can be said for most new shows. This pretty much sums it up; "Caprica differs significantly from its parent series, due to creative and commercial demands. Ronald D. Moore had strong feelings on the matter, explaining his starting point was, "...you don't try to repeat the formula," and going on to say, "...everything about Caprica was designed specifically to not repeat what we had done in Galactica." Although a critical success, Galactica had a predominantly male audience, and both Moore and the network felt the "war in space" backdrop was a major deterrent to female viewers. With these considerations and Caprica's storyline already focused on events taking place before the two Cylon Wars, the series has a different identity, with its own tone, content, and style. While Caprica contains some Easter eggs for Battlestar fans, the series is intended to be accessible to new fans, and, as such, no prior knowledge is necessary." July 15, 201014 yr I've just watched the pilot. It was a long slog which probably should've aired as two episodes but by the end I was kind of engrossed. I'm making an effort to watch some of the last decade's classics and a lot of what's on my list is sci-fi stuff - Alias, Firefly etc - and because I intend to watch Battlestar Galactica I thought I should watch this first, being a prequel and all. I'm not sure (going by the pilot) that any of the characters are really strong enough though (apart from Sister Clarice who I can't stop looking at whenever she's on screen - can you say charisma?) and I was sort of put off by the video game feel to some of it (the graphics in the train bombing sequence - good god...). So basically we'll see how I feel about it as I watch more of it.

I'd say watch BSG before you watch Caprica, it's fine to watch it without seeing the former first, but if you already plan on watching BSG, it will be a better viewing experience for you. Plus, BSG special effects are just the bomb, and absolutely gobsmaking for a TV show. This is like, the thousandth time I posted this video, but it's worth a watch if you haven't seen it already, and you can see what I mean about the effects, especially with the clips of the war scenes at the end  q2x14ZhEc9k Edited July 15, 201014 yr by Daniel Gleek

July 15, 201014 yr Did Sky 1 ever show the last 6 episodes of Caprica at the end, as I don't recall watching them, there is no news of Season 2 yet. Nope, and I am totally disgusted, they completely messed up and I didn't expect Sky do something like that. No word as of yet, the first season will have 19 episodes (down from 20 due to budget) and the second half will be shown starting September. Word is they will make an announcement about Season 2 at this years comic-con.

July 27, 201014 yr SO I'm 7 episodes in now and I'm COMPLETELY hooked. It's already one of the best shows I've ever watched. I love how CRAZY it is - it's like everything that happens is something you never saw coming. Amanda Graystone and Sister Clarice are my favourites currently and both contributed to my favourite moments of the series so far - Amanda announcing at the memorial Zoe was a terrorist, the car crash TV chat show appearance with Drs Graystone, and Amanda and Clarice getting high in the club where Amanda announced that 'I went cerazy!' before dissolving into fits of giggles. She is amazing and has the best acting voice since Kirsten Cohen from The OC.

Can't wait for you to start on Battlestar Galactica now to see what you think, as you are the first person I know who is starting with Caprica instead of the other way round. It's usually Fox that totally fukks up shows to the extent where they end up being cancelled (Firefly, Dollhouse, Terminator, etc..), but, y'know, Sky, Fox, both owned by that c/unt Murdoch so it shouldn't be all that surprising to people.... -_- Caprica is an excellent series however.. TBH, Jark, I would've recommended watching BSG before this, but if you're enjoying it regardless, it probably doesn't make a massive amount of difference...... I loved BSG, easily the best Sci Fi show of the past decade IMO, and I get that some people weren't all that keen on the ending of it, but, personally, I thought it made sense, when you look at the show as a whole, it was pretty clear that they were heading on that sort of trajectory.. It was certainly a more satisfying ending than "Lost" was, IMO....
August 6, 201014 yr Season 1 Part 2 trailer: _ShypfxBUWE CAN'T WAIT. Looks like Daniel finds a way to bring Amanda back as an avatar and Clarice gets a bit POWER CRAZY. I think the word 'epic' is overused but...
August 6, 201014 yr Part 2 of season 1 looks awesome, can't wait for it, after they left it in limbo.
