Another triumph for Will last night.

I'm sure Julie (will4me) won't mind if I post a couple of pics.

Thanks TT

Does anyone know the size of the crowd please ? :D

I don't but munchkin was there so she may have a better idea.

We got to Guildford around 1pm - had a wander to check things out and sat by the main stage to eat our lunch. Watched The Beat and Skaville UK - great bands.

I wish Will could have been on the main stage - the stage was at the lowest point with the ground rising so you got a great view even far back.

We had another wander and came back again for Melo Park - Sian Evans of Kosheen - and listened to Goldie Looking Chain for a while

Richard - my son - wanted to see Tom Middleton in the Funky End Dance tent so we wandered back over there. He is very good - very melodic and fantastic beats sampled with vocals and some well-known songs. I can see why Will incorporates dance/techno/house beats they really are hypnotic. Great stuff - can't wait to see what he does with his dance album if it ever sees the light of day.

Started to make our way back to the Ents stage. Got there just after 8 and there was quite a crowd already gathered. We were over to the left of the stage by the speaker. This caused some distortion of the sound at times but got a 'fairly' good view - no 7 footers in front  - just an occasional child lifted to take piccies. Could only see Will from the waist up but I knew he would work the whole stage so we wouldn't miss out and he came over to our side often, with resultant cheers and waving.

He looked and sounded great - that great big grin on his face Really upbeat set (apart from LIAMOD) everyone joining in with WAI and LRN. WAI seems to be one of his anthems now too. Loved the little song he did when introducing Adam. "That's not his name" :P I thought he'd had a haircut when he lifted his hat - but I'm not sure - it was just for a second.

HUGE crowd - not surprised there was a small crowd for the Happy Mondays :yahoo:

I did wonder if he would do signings when I saw the tent earlier in the day. Shame we all missed that but I've got his autograph already - how many does one person need :P

When he'd finished his set there were calls and cheers for an encore but I knew he wouldn't come out as he'd already said that he had only three more songs to do and knew about the curfew. A chap behind me was yelling and I turned and said that he probably wouldn't come out again. The lights went up and he said - "there he is coming out" - but it was only the roadies packing the gear away. I heard another bloke say - in jest - "that's the last time I buy his records" Such a shame really because I reckon Will was up for another hour at least - he really gets into it and he must be peeved when he can't do more.

As we were walking (or in my case hobbling ) back to the car a chap walking in front with his wife said "He's got a great back catalogue I knew every one of the songs".

That's what it's about isn't it - people having a great time and being able to join in with the songs.

I was absolutely shattered but wouldn't have missed it for the world - and the weather behaved itself too - only a couple of heavy showers. We went into the beer tent for one and were in the Dance Tent for the other.

He really is a showman and great performer. Can't wait for Audley End and the tour now.

P.S. Oh - just remembered - someone held up a banner and he read out that "Julie is a new grandmother" and asked for everyone to give her a big cheer. He also name-checked those behind the scenes - who make this all possible. I wonder how many others think to do that

Sunday - I don't know how many but LOTS AND LOTS - :cheer: :yahoo:

Miss Lister on Devoted has put up a YouTube link - great stuff: http://www.youtube.com/user/ProbettG#play/...l/0/8MEyMz-Ouds

Re the signings comment..... I read back through the thread on D before I posted and found these Tweets posted by Julie:

Will Young has arrived backstage at Guilfest. Driving his own car... Will favours the VW Golf it seems.

Will Young is here doing autographs at the signing tent! Looking forward to his performance later.

Here's some Tweets - found by Julie on D: Love the comments about Happy Mondays  Apparently the organisers said they couldn't both headliners on the same stage and Will confirmed late so the HM got the main stage.

Thanks TT

Does anyone know the size of the crowd please ? :D

Huge apparently, far more than for the main stage according to tweeters last night :D

I think it's bloody great that even though Will isn't playing the biggest stages at these festivals, the punters are flocking to see him, packing the tents, watching on screens outside if they can't get in and, like last night, choosing to see him over other acts that the organisers have chosen as the main players.

He hasn't had media publicity for his festival appearances, but word must spread somehow, because he's attracted some great crowds at all of his sets, he loves it, they love him and he's done himself proud each time.

One of Julie's pix - just about sums Will up :P

Apparently someone at the front heard the photog saying that he was going to cover the Happy Mondays but was sent to the Ents stage instead........ mm I wonder why

Just as well too - otherwise we'd have no press piccies

Thanks for all these fantastic reports and piccies, what a guy! :yahoo: and thanks for such a brilliant report from the festival munckin.

Thanks to Janet.

Sunday evening was a choice of The Happy Monday’s or Will Young. I watched the first two numbers by the HM’s then Rhys and I decided to watch Will Young. We camped it up and managed to push our way past children and old lady’s towards the front of the stage. Will was fab, professional and fun - the crowd loved it - and so did we.

Thanks TT, those guys and quite a lot more, seemed to enjoy Will and find him far better and more entertaining than the HM's, which is nice to keep reading about. :D

Berni has posted some fabulous close-up piccies on O/S courtesy of Mr Berni

Insomniac Tweet watcher here-found a post about Guilfest that links to a utube clip. At first I thought it was just a comic clip of a guy pretending to be a character called Ganjo-but he mentioned Will so thought I'd watch-then about 1 min 46 secs in he's on the Pimms bus and introduces Will and there is an amazing long clip of Will snging Friday's Child-really good quality.

Here's the guys Tweet:

Thanks for that munchkin.
Despite sporadic wet weather over the weekend, this year’s GuilFest was declared as the best yet by Tony Scott.

“We felt it went really well,” he said. “Everybody had the Dunkirk spirit and it rained all through Brian Wilson, but it didn’t affect anybody.

“There was so much going on. Highlights were Brian Wilson, Will Young, and the Wailers went down well, but everything gelled perfectly.

“We had people of all different ages. The Rocksound Stage was packed on Friday for You Me At Six and then on the Saturday we had Pendulum DJ-ing at the same time Brian Wilson was on so it was firing on all cylinders.”

Attendance at the 2008 festival was down on previous years, but Scott said 2009’s line-up brought back the crowds.

“We haven’t got the final figures yet, but it was up about 20% on last year," he said

Nice one Sunday & thanks to willsdoc for this.

Just got the Surrey Adertiser paper and there's a double page spread about Guilfest in it.

The Sunday review has the headline "WILL DRAWS IN THE BIG CROWDS" and a lovely big photo with the caption "Will Young left the crowd yelling for more".

The relevant bit of text:

The nights biggest crowd was not on the main stage , as from the moment a bowler-hatted Will Young bounced onto the Ents 24 stage he was on to a winner. All it took was a twang of the braces, or a smile from the Pop Idol-winner-turned-genuine Pop Star to send the hoards of screaming teenage girls into a frenzy. His energetic, pitch-perfect hour long set featured hits, Leave Right Now, Your Game, Switch it On. And although the atmosphere dipped slightly through the middle as he indulged in some of his ballads, the tempo and the cheering rose again as Will left the crowd yelling for more with a rousing rendition of The Letter
