August 9, 200915 yr Well, the last two weren't even on "Appetite..."  And frankly, I cant fukkin' stand "November Rain".... That to me is the very nadir of just how cr@p G n R went..... A bloated, pompous, wanky "ballad".... Yeah, like I aint gonna prefer "Smells Like Teen Spirit", "Jesus Christ Pose", "Rhinocerous", "Jeremy" or "Would" to that bloated, cliched pile of sh!t....... You do realise that GNR had written 'November Rain' for Appetite, right? The only reason it didn't make the album was because they felt that they only needed one ballad, and that was SCOM. I just think November Rain is a beautiful song. The piano is superb, Slash's guitar work is some of his very best, and the lyrics are fantastic.

The only reason it didn't make the album was because they felt that they only needed one ballad, and that was SCOM. An irrelevant point, the song didn't make it onto the finished album - end of..... Bands do this often, they write about 20 or 30 songs for an album and then pick the best 10/12 or whatever for that particular album.... So, "Appetite...." clearly had a very stringent "editing" process that "Use Your Illusion" didn't......
August 9, 200915 yr tbh i really really cant stand november rain. I agree, it's pish..... At the end of the day, G n R went with the best ballady-song for "Appetite....", ie, Sweet Child o Mine...... Almost certainly the better choice....

Use Your Illusions was written with filler in mind - read Slash's autobiography. The band had a huge amount of material they'd amassed, and wanted to get it all recorded and out of the way so they could start afresh for the next album, which alas never arrived. And it wasn't an irrelevant point - you used 'November Rain' as an example of a song that showed the band GNR became after Appetite. I'm merely pointing out the fact that they'd written that song during Appetite, alongside other ballad songs like 'Don't Cry' and their cover of 'Knockin' On Heavens Door', shows that it was the band they always were. Just because Appetite was written as a pure hard-rock album doesn't mean that GNR sold-out or changed when Illusions offered different material.
August 11, 200915 yr Just because Appetite was written as a pure hard-rock album doesn't mean that GNR sold-out or changed when Illusions offered different material. Sorry, but that's exactly the way I see it... "Appetite..." focussed, raw, energetic, Rock music for ROCK FANS.... Use Your Illusion - bloated, p***-poor, weak, full of filler and stuff which should never have made the cut, this was more Rock Music for the FM radio, MOR crowd.... Like I said, there was one perfectly decent album that could have been made out of it, instead of two below-average ones, with a bit of judicious pruning..... Of course they bloody sold out, they put out weak, sub-standard material that they never would have done in the past purely just to make money off of two albums instead of one, the very definition of "selling out" that is...
August 11, 200915 yr Not as good as Psychopathy Red but still a great metal song. I agree with Grimly that God Hates Us All is the best Slayer album of the 00's so far but only just as Christ Illusion has its fair share of great songs. I feel Slayer somehow are trying to recapture what they did with Reign in Blood both this song and Psychopathy Red come under 3mins which is the sort of length of a RiB song is, i doubt highly though they will come out with a new ground breaking album like RiB but just another good/great thrash album that will appeal to 80's thrash metal fans most.

Use Your Illusions could have been Appetite Mk. II and sold just as well as it did in it's more popular form. And, again I'm referencing Slash's autobiography, the decision to put it out as two single albums at the same time was a record company decision. The only compromise the band got was that it be sold as two single albums instead of a double, as this way their poorer fans didn't need to spend extra money just to hear their favourite band; they could choose which album they wanted to buy.

That's just pretty lame.... How many actually made the decision to buy one over the other...? And I simply dont buy that the record company was somehow "forcing" them to put out loads of bloody filler onto the albums where a single album with a good editiing process (ie, chucking out the filler) would have been preferable, Geffen weren't forcing Sonic Youth or Nirvana to make such compromises, you didn't see "Nevermind 1 and 2" put out, of course there was "Incesticide" but we all knew that was out-takes, demos and filler.... Of course the band are gonna put their own spin onto it... Slash isn't exactly going to say "yeah, we did two albums because we wanted to make more money..." is he....?
August 12, 200915 yr What's wrong with making more money anyway? GNR was a full-time venture, it's perfectly acceptable for them to want to make as much money as possible, as long as it's not at a terrible cost to the consumer. IMO, the double-album idea was a fair and valid one. No different from when Metallica released Load and Reload.
