Shot record boss critically ill

Ms Sinclair has been unconscious since Sunday evening

The owner of a record label who was accidentally shot with an air rifle by her son is critically ill in hospital.

Jill Sinclair, who owns ZTT Records with husband Trevor Horn, was hit in the neck while in her garden at home near Henley, Oxfordshire, on Sunday.

Ms Sinclair, 54, was unconscious in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Reading on Tuesday.

The pellet from her 22-year-old son's rifle hit an artery, leaving her in a critical, but stable, condition.

A company spokesman said: "It was a complete accident. It was a real freak occurrence that her son was shooting at some targets in the garden and wasn't aware that she was close by.

"Purely accidentally she took a pellet in the neck. She is under deep sedation and in an induced coma."

Successful label

The company spokesman said it was too early to tell at this stage whether Ms Sinclair would suffer brain damage from the injury.

The couple have four children, three girls and a boy, and the youngest is aged 11.

ZTT Records enjoyed considerable success with bands such as Frankie Goes To Hollywood and The Art of Noise.

In the 1990s ZTT became a successful dance label boasting names like Seal and Adamski.

Ms Sinclair, a former maths teacher, married her record producer husband 26 years ago.

The influence of ZTT Records

The owner of ZTT Records, Jill Sinclair, is seriously ill in hospital after being accidentally shot by her son. Her company was one of the most innovative labels of the 1980s.

Frankie Goes to Hollywood's first three singles were number ones

Ms Sinclair's husband Trevor Horn had already made a name for himself before founding the label.

He came to public attention performing as the Buggles on Video Killed the Radio Star in 1979, a number one hit and the first video to be played on MTV.

He also gained production credits with ABC, Dollar and Malcolm McLaren.

He founded ZTT in 1983. It was named after a poem by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, which had described "zang tumb tumb" as the sound of a machine gun firing.

Ms Sinclair became the label's managing director, while NME writer Paul Morley concentrated on marketing duties.

Grace Jones enjoyed success on ZTT with Slave to the Rhythm

Mr Morley and Mr Horn formed Art of Noise, a group which heavily used synthesizers and samples.

One of their EPs, Into Battle, would be ZTT's first release in September 1983.

Frankie Goes to Hollywood were the first major signing in 1983, and it was the band's first and the label's second single, Relax, that became the label's first number one in January 1984.

The song was banned by the BBC for its suggestive lyrics but its five weeks at number one were swiftly followed by a further nine weeks on top of the chart for the follow-up, Two Tribes.

Relax stayed in the Top 75 for a full year and ZTT was well and truly established.

Art of Noise began to chart, while style icon Grace Jones also enjoyed success with her single and album Slave to the Rhythm.

ZTT was all about style. It dared to be different in the way its releases were packaged and promoted.

There were extensive sleeve notes, covers containing secret codes and multi-format releases with numerous remixes.

Aside from the records themselves, ZTT also had a range of merchandise.

Perhaps one of the images of the decade is the t-shirt proclaiming Frankie Say Relax, which seemed to be everywhere in the summer of 1984.

Change of direction

A new era began in 1988, after Frankie Goes to Hollywood's second album failed to match the success of their debut.

Lead singer Holly Johnson - and German group Propaganda - would go to court to be released from their contracts with ZTT.

The label refocused on the emerging dance music scene.

Manchester group 808 State would reach the top 10 with their anthemic song Pacific, released at the end of 1989, and Seal was the next major ZTT act to emerge a year later.

ZTT continues today, mostly finding new ways to breathe life into its back catalogue through digital downloads and remastered versions of albums.

And in 2004 it also released a compilation showcasing Mr Horn's finest work as a producer, including some acts which were signed to other labels, such as the Pet Shop Boys and Simple Minds.

ZTT Records is a record label founded in 1983 by NME journalist Paul Morley, record producer Trevor Horn, producer/engineer Gary Langan and businesswoman Jill Sinclair. The label's name was also printed as "Zang Tumb Tuum" and "Zang Tuum Tumb" on various releases.

ZTT is an initialism based on the title of Filippo Tommaso Marinetti's sound poem Zang Tumb Tumb. The word "Tuuuum" is also featured on the cover of the original publication of the poem in book form.

ZTT enjoyed considerable success in the 1980s with the composer Andrew Poppy, bands such as Propaganda, The Art of Noise, and the chart-topping Frankie Goes to Hollywood. In 1989, both Propaganda and Frankie Goes To Hollywood frontman Holly Johnson went to court to be released from their contracts, and won.

In the 1990s, ZTT became a successful dance label once again, with major names on their roster including Seal and 808 State.

ZTT Records in London (1986)Over the years, the label has continued to dip into its well of 80s material by constantly reissuing material by Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Propaganda and The Art Of Noise in various formats - from remix albums, to straight reissues.

ZTT Records is now owned by the SPZ Group, which stands for Sarm Perfect ZTT - Sarm recording studios, Perfect Songs publishing and ZTT recordings.

Action Series

As part of ZTT internal cataloguing of releases, they maintained two series, the Action Series and the Incidental Series. The Action Series was issued mainly to singles and albums by a majority of the labels artists. However, to confuse matter further, the series also contains a booklet and a concert.

The Incidental Series seemed to follow even less logic, and indeed individual releases and even actors in videos and voiceovers received their own IS number. In fact, even oddities like the day Relax was banned and Holly Johnson's walking stick had Incidental Series numbers.

The series was further complicated by having some singles released with an ZTIS catalogue number. The Incidental Series seemed to mirror the FAC numbering system used by Factory Records, where a cat was famously called FAC 191.

The Action series was discontinued by ZTT in 1988.
