some more bizarre kids tv moments from the vaults:

Husband and wife in real life but man and shrill-voiced naughty schoolboy on stage, noisy Scottish double-act the Krankies proved popular with younger viewers who identified with wee Jimmy's (that is, Janette's) anti-establishment childish behaviour, oblivious to the fact that she was a vertically challenged (4ft 5 and a half in) woman in her late thirties.

This BBC series - following two seasons of The Krankies Klub on ITV - took the features of a typical children's comic as its format, with regular items including a spoof Agatha Christie-style mystery serial, Mayhem On The Overland Express, Jimmy's attempts to teach Ian a new skill, comedy magic from the Great Soprendo and a musical guest slot. Another feature was a weekly visit to Café Macaroni, home of further frantic goings-on. In the second series the regular serial was The Adventures Of Jimmy Burgermac which featured the entire Krankie family. The series was great fun for kids, admittedly, but older viewers probably found The Krankies Elektronik Komik kompletely unwatchable

so did people growing up in the 1970s and 1980s actually think she was a boy then?

I thought she was a boy when I was about 5.

I remember Cafe Macaroni it had a theme tune that went like this

Tony Macaroni - he owns a Glasgow caff

Though he thinks it's rather good - it's really rather naff.

The second series was rubbish.
