Artists pick out their own favourite songs as sources of inspiration

Nicky Wire, Manic Street Preachers

Patience, Take That

This is not an ironic choice. It's the greatest comeback single in history. If Neil Young had written it, people would be calling it a masterpiece. I've always liked Take That, too. They looked so brilliant back in the day and did everything right, but this is something else. It's got such a dark lyric: "My heart is numb, has no feeling/ So while I'm healing/ Just try and have a little patience". There's also a maturity about it that suits the boys all grown-up. Gary Barlow is a genius; I won't have anyone argue against him. When Alex Turner slagged off Take That at the 2006 Q awards for getting an award, I nearly lost it. James [Dean Bradfield from the Manics] was grabbing me by the arm, saying: "Don't lose it, Nicky." You get so many alternative bands banging on about how to make perfect pop, and this kicks all their arses.

Patience, for me, is still the best song of this Take That era. I like it even better than RTW.

great to read i had read this earlier and the manics are also kylie fans, i like their music taste.

Didn't Kylie do a collaboration with the Manics?

They wrote a single of of her called some kind of bliss it was the lead single of her criminally under rated impossible princess album, james dean bradford often said he feels he let kylie down with the song some kind of bliss as to date it is her only offical single to miss the top 20 peaking at number 22, its a love her hate song and many kylie fans are divided over it im in the love camp for the song, they also sang a duet little baby nothing which was also great.
