exactly, I thought the song was great in its own right, if I hadnt heard it in tenor(which unsuprisingly I cant recall anyway) I would have thought the song was meant to be in that key, its very hard when comparing an ICONIC song heard for years sung by every top tenor going!! I didnt even twig till Rolando mentioned the change,

There have been a few negative things about D. It seems some take it that it's his fault that the Aria had to be transposed. I suppose if you're not a tenor your voice can't be good. It's almost as if they think it was cheating. Maybe they'll try him as a soprano next time to prove it's a fault that his range isn't suitable for that either.

It shows how different opera is to pop or musicals. There his higher range is superb but with the added power needed in opera he's a definate baritone.

There would have been negative comments whatever he did or didn't do.

In my opinion, AT, LLB and Meatloaf could all go and no one would miss them. I don't feel they add anything to the show . Sue

At least Meatload and Rolando are alive. That helps. I'm with most other people in that I'd have liked a video diary of how they progressed to this point shown before they sang. I wonder if they'll do that for the next aria.

Marcella has tweeted that she's started on her sessions for the second week and she also mentions week 3.

Editing to post tweet from Katherine Jenkins about 4pm

Just done a session with @dannymcfly. Now it's @dariuscambpell. This week is hard -much less time to work on arias :-0

It's Opera Wars as soprana Katherine Jenkins scorns reality series

IT featured a former Britpop bassist playing air guitar to the strangled strains of Rossini, and a panel of judges featuring an interior designer and an outsized rock star – all in the name of taking opera to the masses.

But the new celebrity talent show Popstar to Operastar stands virtually no chance of popularising the discipline in the way Strictly Come Dancing did for ballroom, according to Grammy award-winning soprano Rebecca Evans.

The show pits eight pop artists against each other in a competition to learn how to sing classic operatic works.

The Welsh National Opera star described the ITV programme, which started on Friday, as a “good laugh”, but said producers were deluded if they believed it would increase audiences at Britain’s opera houses.

Katherine Jenkins, a member of a bizarrely-assembled judging panel that also includes Laurence Llewelyn Bowen and Meat Loaf, has said the format will make the snooty world of opera seem more accessible.

Speaking before the series started, she told the Western Mail: “It will show people how difficult it is to sing opera. Viewers will be able to see the training sessions and understand what happens.

“The dumbing down label seems to be given to anything that makes classical music more accessible.

“I’ve always gone against it.

“If you look at all of the crossover artists who have been emerging during the last few years from shows like Britain’s Got Talent and The X Factor, it goes to show how people now perceive classical music once they don’t find it intimidating or elitist.

“Each show (on Popstar to Operastar) will feature different arias from operas that people know and love.”

But Evans said there was no chance that the comedy value of watching celebrities attempt operatic classics would persuade the public to pay to watch the professionals.

“I watched bits of it and I thought it was a good laugh.

“It had great comedy value,” Evans said.

“But what they’re doing bears no resemblance to what I do.

“It takes years of hard grafting to reach the standard I’ve obtained, or colleagues like Sarah Connolly and Bryn Terfel.”

The Welsh National Opera soprano didn’t feel that viewers of the ITV show would be inspired to go and see a real opera after tuning in on Friday evening.

“Good luck to them all but I really don’t think somebody watching Alex James would then think of going to see theBarber of Seville,” she said.

“Anyone could hear that Nessun Dorma was tampered with, as were all the arias and they struggled to sing them even then.

“We’re certainly not worried about our jobs! It thought it was entertainment and to be fair it must have been scary for those taking part.”

Mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly who is in rehearsals for Ariadne at the Metropolitan Opera, New York argued that the programme failed to capture the difficulty of performing opera.

“It should be taken as a bit of fun. But they do need to point out that opera isn’t just about singing. That’s just the start,” she said.

“You have to study the psychology of the character and the intention of the composer.

“We attempt the big questions in life and try to interpret the score on a deeper level.

“It’s not just about getting the notes in the right order.”

Pontrhydyfen-born Evans, who is singing Mimi in the Royal Opera House’s production of La Boheme. said the programme “exploited the world of opera”.

“They will be calling more people opera singers when they are not opera singers – it’s television gone mad,” she said.

The programme is presented by former Hear’Say member and classical pianist Myleene Klass along with television gardener Alan Titchmarsh.

Mexican tenor Rolando Villazon, who has performed at Bryn Terfel’s Faenol festival in the past, completes the judging panel.

Other celebrities taking part in the programme include boyband McFly’s Danny Jones, Vanessa White of girl group the Saturdays, Pop Idol star Darius Campbell, Bernie Nolan of the Nolans, Jimmy Osmond and Shakespeare’s Sister Marcella Detroit.

What on earth does she think actors in musicals do. Just sit down and sing note by note with no reference to character or plot? She just comes over in the same way young boys do - I don't like it so it's no good.

But Evans said there was no chance that the comedy value of watching celebrities attempt operatic classics would persuade the public to pay to watch the professionals.

There's absolutely no chance I'd pay big bucks to be despised by the stars of the show.

IMHO she knows only her own genre. Big fish in little pond syndrome. She needs to be taken out of HER comfort zone.

I'd rather go and see Darius perform ,in character, a role which has been built organically taking everything, original source, politics. culture, history and the ghosts of legendary predecessors into consideration not to mention distilling 1000 pages into a manageable time scale. Frankly when he started rehearsing GWTW practically nothing was firmed up and what was, was tweaked to death. I wonder how our dear friend would have liked rehearsing every day and doing he show ( a different version) at night.

I think it's the arrogance which puts people off. Then we have Rolando who appreciates the difficulties and appreciates the progress of total newcomers who have had only weeks of tuition. His is 'try and grow' hers is 'you're useless because you have no training and are you'. No one expects an opera singer after a few weeks but isn't it good to see how proper training can begin to grow the possibilities.

I wonder what the comedy value was in watching Ms Evans sing Casta Diva after 7 weeks training.

Answer - none because she'd never have attempted it!

It's not of any practical use or interest but apparently Darius is now joint favourite with Danny according to some bookie or other.

I'd just come on to post that. As you say, doesn't mean anything other than Darius was good to go from 2nd to last in the betting to 2nd from first.

Popstar To Operastar Betting Odds Have Danny Jones And Darius Campbell As Favourites With Vanessa White Favourite To Go

Monday 18 January 2010 at 14:46

Popstar To Operastar 2010 Betting Odds make Danny Jones and Darius Campbell the favourites to win after week one whilst Vanessa White from The Saturdays seems most likely to follow Blur’s Alex James out the door by being the second popstar eliminated from the competition.

Danny Jones And Darius Campbell Most Likely Winners

The early favourite to win is McFly front man Danny Jones. Despite his tender years he has become the most likely winner of Pop Star To Opera Star and he can currently be backed at 5/2 with Stan James. Coral and Paddy Power both seem pretty confident Jones will win, they both offer just 7/4. Darius Campbell, a former contender on both Popstars and Pop Idol, now tries Popstar To Operastar and he could make it third time lucky as far as talent shows are concerned, he is the second favourite at 7/2 with SkyBet, Boylesports and Coral.

Kym Marsh And Marcella Detroit Both Have Chances Of Winning

It looks as though just four hopefuls have a chance of winning, the third favourite is Kym Marsh, the former Hear Say singer is 5/1 with Coral whilst next best is Marcella Detroit, the former member of Shakespears Sister is 11/2 with Bet365 and Paddy Power. The three most likely to go this weekend are Vanessa White, who is 15/8 with Bet365 to be eliminated, whilst both Jimmy Osmond and Bernie Nolan are 10/3 with Bet365. not clued up on betting, that means people went out and bet on Darius to win after seeing him sing on the show? whereas they hadnt been doing so before.

Means nothing really, but all the same nice to see,

also nice reading comments from the net about how suprised some are that Darius can sing like that!

Edited by prettyinpink

and that's him standing dead still.

It will be interesting to see if Darius gets stuck behind a static mike again this week or if he is allowed to sing in character.

I wouldn't want him concentrating on movements rather than the aria. If I had to chose I'd have it like last week when his face showed the feelings of the aria he was singing. But some really do need movement. I can't imagine The Toreador static.

He looks a bit tired but it's lovely to see.
