Meatloaf couldn't even remember his name the other week, AT had to prompt him! I feel that both he and LLB just bring the level of the show down. Surely they could have found somebody else who had more knowledge. Sue

Rolando pronounces Darius in the way it was originally pronounce. I quite like that.

How do you know that this is the way it was originally pronounced Meg?

One thing for sure is that it's not how Darius pronounces his own name, so for me, Rolando is getting it wrong!

I must admit, I quite liked the way he pronounced it too, though I'd like it more if he didn't seem to have a down on D

Wikiname has it how I would expect it to sound, and their reference relates to an Old Testament Persian king. I think much of the description of the name there is most apt for our man!

Pronunciation: dare-ee-uss

Meaning: to be rich, to hold value

Darius was also the name of an Old Testament Persian king and was used as a name in Europe and other areas beginning in the Middle Ages. Darius also means he that informs himself

Almost perfect for D, what insight Booth and Avril must have had when they named him :)

Their sons are three kings of Persia.

Does anyone else feel on a low when it's all over and have to wait until Friday for it to start again?

After the initial euphoria of him getting through and the discussion of the show etc! it does seem to go a little flat for me too. I must admit though, I am allowing my mind to wonder and I'm having great thoughts of album, tour and lots of great D happenings this year, and it's exciting me quite a lot  Just hope some(if not all and more) of the dreams come off, or I could be building myself up for a huge disappointment

It certainly is Meg. Better than the void we've had over the past few months. It feels so good to have something to hope for and look forward to at last. Sue
It sounds as though everyone will be at the final - so even if D isn't in it - and I hope he is- then we'll still see him for the next two weeks.

What do you think about the comment about Darius?

snippet - "What you should be doing is looking beyond the image of the channel and get excited by Darius Campbell as a classical singer in the orthodox mould."

The article is a very lighthearted piece and at first I thought it was well written satire but then I googled Kathleen Battle and she was an unknown, a daughter of a steel worker and she became one of America's finest sopranos.

you know there are quite a lot of Opera buffs classic, singing teachers, making comments about Darius and his voice. I love searching them out. These people arent fans, are unbiased and have been suprised, men and women.

I think its not just that he can sing, but the tone of his voice, the quality that is in there, it really came through last week - and we are talking four weeks tring here - not months or years!!! not that I want or imagine him as Opea, but classical crossover, musical theatre.

I am so praying there are plenty voting on two levels, for his voice - and as fans. I really dont think the girls are any better than Darius, their voices seem disguised in the fact they are shrill and hit high notes..

They are more what is expected. We hear very little of the baritones normally and his voice isn't as they expect it to be. People who listen may find it hard as it's not how they perceive him, or a pleasant surprise that a pop singer could have a voice like his.

What is surprising is that if this is an apparently musically knowledgable man's true opinion, with the references to stamina and orthodox, he seems to be entertaining the notion that with more training Darius might be capable of performing stage opera. You don't need that much stamina to make crossover albums or sing a few arias at prestigious events.

First, they'd have to get over the old high hurdle - the inability of the GBP to take Darius and his talents seriously.

It's a shame he did 'Popstars'. Without being set up on that, he would have been judged better on 'Pop Idol'. Still, everything happens for a reason - even if it's one you don't like.

It's ironic that Popstars was the only reality show Darius has done that he didn't actually enter himself for, and it's poisoned everything he's tried to do for 10 years.

I do like that comment though - so much I brought it over. This man isn't the only one who seems to have a high opinion of Darius' voice.

I'm not so concerned about Rolando Hill - that's as old history as the Penny Black. What you should be doing is looking beyond the image of the channel and get excited by Darius Campbell as a classical singer in the orthodox mould.

I was trained in the same school - literally - as one of the other judges, Llewellyn Bowen, in the days when there were just three of us singing male voices in the choir. One is a top conductor, one a Guildhall voice teacher, and me, I'm nothing. But it does entitle me to suggest that with just one qualification - stamina - Darius' voice is in its own right alone as exciting a discovery as was Kathleen Battle. Let him loose against Bryn and we'll see fur fly! That he'll have problems stopping the females screaming does no harm - and his height gives him troubleless bass notes, a natural organ pipe from the bottom of his feet to the roof of his mouth.

The only question is that at the moment, he's being given pop-length pieces a mere three minutes long to sing. He should be able to do more - it would be interesting to see him try.

An interesting second place will go to Marcella Detroit, who still has to master the cracks in her voice a bus could drive through, but then again, these shows are about learning - if she had made her eyes up in the Horus pattern singing The Queen of the Night, she could have turned the role into something memorably hermetic.

For the rest, a better demonstration of why commercial pop music is dying could hardly be sought - no voice, no support, no pitch, no stability, cannon fodder.
