I think that's actually not too bad as these things usually go, especially from male TV critics. Just gentle ribbing.

Lots of famous people have taken part in soundalike contests etc and come in 4th or 5th so I think he's just tapping into a previous comedic memory there.

I'd love to see that programme but with Darius as the judge. I bet it'd be hilarious.
mm, they don t like it do the tbh, he acknowledges Darius did it in the show, but wants to up the anti - can he go the full distance..well obviously probably not unless he ha done the training dur , would like to see Bernie try, she would be on the floor gasping moving around and singing
Any of them would. It takes years to train your body to react in the way needed. Only an idiot would expect or require someone to do a full opera with 2 months training. Sounds as though he has little respect for opera singers if he does think 2 months is enough to let anyone have a go at performing in a whole opera.
more like he doesnt really knows much about opera but kids that he does.

Popstar to Operastar - The Final

Popstar to Opera Star

How wonderful that at last Darius Campbell ne Danish has at last moved away from being a talent show bridesmaid to become a Popstar to Operastar bride.

It was all very emotional for him and his very elegantly be-suited family. To find that ten years on in the same studio overnight success was his. There is no doubt that he delivered some of the performances of the evening. He is extremely comfortable as Figaro and has found a voice that manages to match his stature as well as flowing with exactly the right sort of emotion.

We all have to feel terribly sorry for Bernie though. She’s a wonderful singer, a very funny, warm modest person and one of the most popular popstars from the entire experience. What was particularly touching was that all the pop stars, apart from Jimmy, made it back for the final and the class of 2010 reunion. Even first round casualty Alex James - who has apparently been glued to his TV set ever since his departure - is threatening to keep up his opera singing. Is the world ready for more Jamesian renditions of Rossini in the style of the Back Street Kids?

We were all very proud of the series. It has an enormous impact on Friday nights, a glamourous beacon to a nation stuck at home through the bitter dark days of January and early February. Yet again it was the most watched programme last night and the voting was particularly intense. There was very little to separate the count between Darius and Bernie which shows just how passionate and engaged our audience has become in the contest and in opera .

I have to admit to having spent most of last night after the programme running down dark corridors or dodging in to unused broom cupboards to escape my mighty mate Meat who was very emotional about the idea of our impending separation.

I was threatening to send him a locket with a picture of me in it for him to wear on stage as his promotional tour for his new album kicks of this week in Norway.

In fact on the judging panel I was always the odd one out as Meat has a new album out as has Rolando and indeed Katherine. I on the other hand have only got a paint range. But some of the colours are definitely operatic!

So as the red flush curtains sweep across the stage trailing heavy gold fringe in the theatrical dust, the nation waves goodbye to Popstar to Operastar 2010 and with good wishes launches Darius in his new career as opera totty.

I know we’d all love to do it again and I very much hope that you lot would like to see us back again.

No. Christiansen is the Champion of Real Opera and all its traditions.

He totally disapproved of the programme but reading between the lines , I'd say he's aware the boy done good in that artificial situation - where they had only to sing very truncated sections of the arias and often the hard bits were the ones which hit the cutting room floor.

For example there's a bel canto verse in Toreador which the opera lovers wanted to hear to see if Darius could have mastered it - he wasn't given the chance His Toreador was all chorus and a boring bit about a toast and another like the commentator's pre -match stuff describing the occasion and the crowd startin gto anticipate. What ? Darius couldn't tell us - he wasn't allowed to do the good bit - the bullfight. Not exactly a lot to sing pasionately about but he still made it entertaining.

Back to the stamina thing pointed out by the guy who thought discovering Darius's voice was as exciting as finding Kathleen Battle's.

Real opera singers don't wear head mikes.

As far as singing in costume and in character, I don't think there's any doubt Darius can do that and not only that, but also take his character on an emotional journey through great and terrible happenings in life which change his character's personality

I wondered what dear Laurence would have to say...... not a lot actually but the pictures are lovely. thanks, megham.

I think Darius looked more shocked at semi-final stage.

He probably knew he nailed all of the stuff at the final and hoped the public would deliver the vote to him, but was already happy that he'd had the final experience and that duet with Rolando.

Aww they are such Lovely pics bless him  ...........OMG i'm sooooooooooo Bloody proud of him!!! :cheer:
Marcella looked disapproving all the way through the final. She could not have been and it could just be the way she looks.

nice article, BUT working on third album - I am trapped in ground hog day! perhaps it needs a twiddle...

err, not so nice article,...bet KJ loves that, coming second choice to charlotte church. so 4.6 million people arent enought to bother with, while 3 million masterchef ones are?

Thanks Feral cat. Interesting reading. They could have used a recent picture of him and jacqui rather than one about six years old but trust the sun.The sun say the show has been axed but they dont know Itv havent announced anything.Anyway BBC would make a good job of it although this is the first time I felt ITV had made a good job of the programme apart from meatloaf and alan titchmarsh. Would like to see aled jones present with mylene.
The bit about masterchef viewers is what made me n ot understand why popstar to operastar would go, also BB had less at least some weeks. I think the Sun are just trying to cause controversy. However as I said BBC would do a good job. They may have a job with Rolando not appearing again if he has other things on the go.
I wouldnt watch another series anyway, unless darius was involved, especially if the sun thinks the likes of Kimbely? from Girls aloud is a more worthy contestant for the show,.. not even for Rolando, lovely as he was(poor diction in Impossible Dream imo though)
