Posted September 3, 200915 yr well .... in 1966 homosexuality was still illegal, women were second class citizens as it was a mans world, and black people were generally disliked. it would be over a decade before equal rights became more acceptable (through punk despite legislation in the interim period). think its a great track, but then again im a big yardbirds fan. September 3, 200915 yr I have always thought this was one of the best tracks written in the 60s period. Great song.
September 4, 200915 yr Author I'm not familiar with this track, but it sounds good. twas the 'b' side of 'shapes of things', another political track (anti war)
September 4, 200915 yr Lesley Gores song You dont own me was abit ahead of its time, about womans indepedence etc etc
September 5, 200915 yr Here are the actual lyrics: Can you judge a man, By the way he wears his hair? Can you read his mind, By the clothes that he wears? Can you see a bad man, By the pattern on his tie? Well then, Mr, you're a better man than I, Yeah, Mr, you're a better man than I, Oh, Mr, you're a better man than I, Yeah, Mr, you're a better man than I. Could you tell a wise man, By the way he speaks or spells? Is this more important, Than the stories that he tells? And call a man a fool, If for wealth he doesn't strive? Well then, Mr, you're a better man than I, Yeah, Mr, you're a better man than I, Oh, Mr, you're a better man than I, Yeah, Mr, you're a better man than I. Can you condemn a man, If you're faith he doesn't hold? Say the colour of his skin, Is the colour of his soul? Could you say that men, For king and country all must die? Well, Mr, you're a better man than I, Yeah, Mr, you're a better man than I, Oh, Mr, you're a better man than I, Yeah, Mr, you're a better man than I.
September 6, 200915 yr Good lyrics to be sure, and a good, powerful message.... But, I dont think they're more "advanced" (whatever it is you mean by this, Rob, I presume you're meaning "progressive" or in terms of changing moods) than this.... Bob Dylan - The Times, They Are A' Changin' Come gather 'round people Wherever you roam And admit that the waters Around you have grown And accept it that soon You'll be drenched to the bone. If your time to you Is worth savin' Then you better start swimmin' Or you'll sink like a stone For the times they are a-changin'. Come writers and critics Who prophesize with your pen And keep your eyes wide The chance won't come again And don't speak too soon For the wheel's still in spin And there's no tellin' who That it's namin'. For the loser now Will be later to win For the times they are a-changin'. Come senators, congressmen Please heed the call Don't stand in the doorway Don't block up the hall For he that gets hurt Will be he who has stalled There's a battle outside And it is ragin'. It'll soon shake your windows And rattle your walls For the times they are a-changin'. Come mothers and fathers Throughout the land And don't criticize What you can't understand Your sons and your daughters Are beyond your command Your old road is Rapidly agin'. Please get out of the new one If you can't lend your hand For the times they are a-changin'. The line it is drawn The curse it is cast The slow one now Will later be fast As the present now Will later be past The order is Rapidly fadin'. And the first one now Will later be last For the times they are a-changin'.
September 7, 200915 yr Author Good lyrics to be sure, and a good, powerful message.... But, I dont think they're more "advanced" (whatever it is you mean by this, Rob, I presume you're meaning "progressive" or in terms of changing moods) than this.... is there that much difference between the term 'advanced' and 'progressive'?... dont agree, bob dylan sang about changes, yardbirds sang about questioning and challenging your values. mr yabmti certainly spoke far more to me and the values i was brought up in (60's unequality, racism, sexism, homophobia) then anything bob dylan (good at this though he was) ever did.
September 7, 200915 yr TBH I think these lyrics are a better example Blowin' In The Wind How many roads must a man walk down Before you call him a man? Yes, 'n' how many seas must a white dove sail Before she sleeps in the sand? Yes, 'n' how many times must the cannon balls fly Before they're forever banned? The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind, The answer is blowin' in the wind. How many years can a mountain exist Before it's washed to the sea? Yes, 'n' how many years can some people exist Before they're allowed to be free? Yes, 'n' how many times can a man turn his head, Pretending he just doesn't see? The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind, The answer is blowin' in the wind. How many times must a man look up Before he can see the sky? Yes, 'n' how many ears must one man have Before he can hear people cry? Yes, 'n' how many deaths will it take till he knows That too many people have died? The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind, The answer is blowin' in the wind.
