P!nk pumps up KeyArena crowd in tour opener

By Marian Liu

Seattle Times staff reporter

Despite a separated shoulder, P!nk sure got the party started.

The pop star kicked off her tour Tuesday night in Seattle at the KeyArena with acrobats, larger than life inflated jesters and multiple costume changes. Actually, if she never admitted her injury, the packed audience would have never guessed she was hurt. She descended on a trapeze harness down to the stage, where she skipped about and joined the dancers in their routines.

But most of all, her trademark voice and attitude were not affected.

"The louder you are, the better I feel," said P!nk to her fans. She added that despite the pain, there was no way that she would have canceled the concert.

And boy, did she rock and wail, with hits from her almost decade long career. She sang herclassics, such as "Get the Party Started," "Just Like a Pill" and "Family Portrait," as well as recent singles "So What" and "Please Don't Leave Me."

The power of P!nk is her ability to channel her pain into her music — you feel what she feels. When she wants to ignite the party, people dance. And when she wants to go on a mission against a lost love, you pump your fists.

So naturally, the majority of her fans at the show were female, traveling in packs of solidarity. And the good-natured boyfriends and husbands in tow did not protest, even when P!nk was singing about accosting her on-again, off-again husband, motocross racer Carey Hart.

She did play to the partners though, covering Led Zeppelin's "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You," The Divinyls' "I Touch Myself," Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" and Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody."She did them all justice. Plus, the males in attendance didn't seem to mind when female dancers staged a pillow fight in white undies on a large cheetah print bed on stage.

With the bed and costumes that didn't amount to much fabric, P!nk pushed the limits. There was plenty of eye candy (like her hot pink pasty and sparkly purple body suit), but unlike other pop tarts, the costumes were simply the frosting to ice a well-orchestrated show, not to hide its imperfections.

She was also very candid. When starting "Family Portrait," P!nk stopped, admitting she forgot the lyrics, but saying that proved she didn't lip-sync. She also repeated what she said on the "Today" show — that if Kanye were to stop her speech at the awards show like he did with Taylor Swift, he would have met her purse with the brass knuckle handle.

And she chose a great opener to rile things up. The Tings Tings are a favorite, made famous by an Apple ad. Actually, rock station The End (107.7 FM) put the duo down in larger print in their online concert listings, leaving P!nk in fine print. Also, Bumbershoot had signed The Tings Tings for the past Labor Day arts and music festival, before P!nk stole them away.

And the duo did not disappoint. Lead singer Katie White is a force, consuming the stage with her hits — "Shut Up and Let Me Go" and "That's Not My Name."

The only damper of the night was the venue. Originally the concert was planned for the smaller WaMu Theater, before being moved to KeyArena. The tickets were reasonably priced at around $40 each, but many fans got lost, unaware that though they were designated "general" seating, they were separated into lower and upper decks. Certain entrances only admitted one or the other.

But P!nk kept the crowd on a positive note, saying: "I've waited my whole life to get here. I'm so happy."

Chicago review

Pink: Live review

Posted in Music by Amy Carr on September 27th, 2009 at 9:29 pm

If the show Pink put on Saturday night at the Allstate Arena was scaled back due to her separated shoulder injury, it’s hard to imagine what the enthusiastic crowd missed. No doubt Pink would have performed the trapeze stunts millions saw on MTV’s Video Music Awards, but given that her dancers ably filled in, and Pink wowed with surprise after surprise of her own, it’s unlikely anyone felt shortchanged.

Featuring an elaborate carnival-esque set complete with two-story slides, trapeze swings, and ginormous inflatable (scary) clowns, the “Funhouse” tour is a theatrical spectacle on par with divas like Madonna, Britney and Bono. But with Pink as master of ceremonies, it’s mostly about fun. She played to a packed crowd, but her cool, casual demeanor came off as a girl who just dropped in to Chicago to party with a few of her closest friends. (Note to Pink: Please call next time you’re in town. We should definitely hang out.) From her opening cover of AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell,” it was clear Pink came to Rosemont to rock.

It was the first of several covers throughout the night, including a less successful take on Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Led Zepplin’s “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” and Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy.” But the best cover by far was her smokin’ hot rendition of Divinyls’ “I Touch Myself.” Wearing black skin-tight lace that left virtually nothing to the imagination, she writhed and moaned on a couch while hands came out from under the cushions to help get the job done. The scene was intimate enough to make one feel guilty for watching, but few of the men in the audience or the huge lesbian contingent could turn away—even when she finished off by slowly licking her fingers.

The couch dance was one of many accentuated by fantastic videography. Recognizing that many fans will watch most of the concert on the video monitors, producers of this show found a way to do more than simply videotape what’s happening on the stage. During one of Pink’s seven costume changes, a piano interlude took a dramatic turn with a static-enhanced black-and-white treatment on the video monitors. The same effect was used to add a touch of cinema to emotional songs such as “Family Portrait” and “Trouble.” At one point, the monitors captured a vantage point all too familiar to many in the crowd as it zoomed in on the screen of a fan’s iPhone videotaping the show. Even for those of us in the “good seats,” the video screens were must-see viewing.

Other than a brief reference to her recent shoulder injury, Pink made no excuses—dancing, jumping and, thankfully, upstaging the ridiculous dancers-in-their-underwear pillow fight taking place behind her during her mega-hit “Rock Star.”

Not surprisingly, she saved the biggest treat of the night for last. After walking through a beautiful gold shower of glitter singing “Glitter in the Air,” Pink hoisted herself up onto a long, white fabric, flipped upside down and proved that she can still do her aerial stunts…with her legs. She gracefully spun above an opened trap door before being slowly lowered inside a tank of water below the stage and pulled back up to finish the show wet, hot and, somehow, still gorgeous. The slight fist pump she gave as she ran off the stage was the first sign that Pink might have had as much fun Saturday night as the rest of us, but she followed it up with this Tweet a little later: “Uuuughhh chicago, you hurt my heart tonight you were so awesome and loud and into it. I was overwhelmed. What a fanfu*kingtastic night. YES.”

YES, indeed.

My friends who i went with admitted they didnt have high expectations but after the show was over they said it was probably one of the best shows they've ever been to. Im so happy i got to see it :D

As far as special suprises, the show seemed pretty routine to me, i know madonna and gaga were on SNL the other night, i have no idea if they were in the audience though that'd be awesome if they were tho!!
