Chart-topping Will Young to visit Liverpool Empire

Sep 1 2011

Chester Chronicle

AWARD-winning artist Will Young released his new album Echoes on August 22 and has announced an autumn tour which comes to the Liverpool Empire on November 6.

Coming on the 10th anniversary of Will’s first audition for Pop Idol in 2001, Echoes is the follow up to his platinum selling Hits collection and is his fifth studio album in a career spawning over eight million sales so far.

Echoes has been produced by Richard X (MIA, Kelis, Goldfrapp) who Will chose after falling in love with Steve Mason’s (Beta Band) Boys Outside album that Richard produced.

Will has written all but one song on the album along with a personally assembled roll call of collaborators including Jim Eliot and Mima Stilwell (Kylie), Andy Cato (Groove Armada) and Pascal Gabriel (Ladyhawke).

Prior to recording his new album Will guest starred in an episode of Skins last year as well as starring in the 2011 TV drama Bedlam.

He also ran this year’s London Marathon in aid of the Catch 22 charity having spent the last year fitting in training around the writing of the album in London, LA, the Namibian desert and Sydney.

Following his hugely successful 2008 and 2009 sell-out tours and acclaimed summer festival appearaches, Will is ready to astound audiences once more with a nationwide tour in October and November.

Will will be performing live versions of his new material along with favourites from his past albums.

Tickets available from Liverpool Empire box office, or by calling 0844 871 3017 or book online at www.liverpoolempire.org.uk.

..With a neat sense of timing, Will Young’s fifth album appears on the tenth anniversary of his first Pop Idol audition.

It’s salutary – and, for Young, deeply satisfying – to reflect how far he has travelled over the intervening decade from the talent-show cliché of the pop puppet. Where contemporaries such as Gareth Gates simply faded away, Young has become a credible artist who firmly exercises creative control over his career.

Echoes finds him teaming up with dance uber-producer Richard X, and while Will’s default mode remains classy blue-eyed soul anthems and sophisticated pop ballads, X introduces enough bubbling synths and subtle club/comedown beats to give this material a fresh twist.

There are hints of George Michael on Personal Thunder while the pounding Jealousy and Good Things show why he was such a good fit when he recently worked with Groove Armada, but Echoes’ standout is Silent Valentine, a lush piano ballad worthy of Elton John in his pomp. Will Young has done the impossible: he has given talent shows a good name.

Will Young - 'Jealousy'

The nicest man in pop, and arguably your nan's favourite famous homosexual, is back - and he's found a new dance sound on this comeback track.

But before you raise your eyebrows and head off to dig out your copy of 'Evergreen' - worry not, because even a club beat can't disguise the great big teary ballad that is 'Jealousy'. But since Will Young is unlikely to ever top the magnificence of 'Leave Right Now', it's for the best that he spruces up the broken-hearted, doe-eyed sound he has made his own since winning Pop Idol in 2002. 2002? Now doesn't that make you feel old...

A gentle opening lets Will's stunning voice take forefront, with only a distant piano and a hint of strings for company. Producer Richard X (he of solo pop hits of old) shows his hand as the chorus hits, with a pulsating beat proving a warm, inviting backing for Will's simple but oh-so infectious chorus. "And it feels like jealousy / and it feels like I can't breathe / and I'm on, down on my knees / and it feels like jealousy" he sings. It's not rocket science, but less is all too often more when it comes to writing pop songs. We can think of several stars who could do with taking note...

No guest rappers, no samples, no rave horns, no dubstep drops. Usually we'd be up in arms if someone forgot these vital ingredients, but here - things are perfect as they are.

Penned by Kish Mauve, the duo responsible for Kylie's enormous 'All The Lovers', the same sense of classy, timeless pop exists in 'Jealousy' as it does in Minogue's 2010 chart epic. Back at the top of his game and sure to regain his place at the top of the charts, Will keeps his trademark sound intact while at the same time spreading his wings and experimenting with new territory and new producers. A superb comeback from a true pop gent.

Will Young and Joe McElderry have top spots in UK album charts

Will Young and Joe McElderry are ruling the top two spaces in the UK album chart this week – holding the Number one and two positions respectively.

Peter Lloyd

3Share.news.PinkPaper.comFriday, 2 September 201131 August 2011Post your comment Will Young and Joe McElderry are ruling the top two spaces in the UK album chart this week – holding the Number one and two positions respectively.

Young, 32, scored his third UK number one album this week with his latest LP, Echoes, while former X Factor winner McElderry debuted at number two with his latest offering entitled Classic.

It's thought to be the first time in domestic chart history that two openly-gay reality TV performers have ruled the charts in this way.

For Young, the success comes ten years to the month since the openly-gay star first auditioned for ITV's Pop Idol series - a competition he went on to win against Gareth Gates.

The fifth studio album to released by the singer/songwriter, it debuted in the top slot on Sunday with one-week sales in excess of 65,000. Young co-wrote all but one track.

The achievement followed a substantial PR and TV campaign, which included An Audience With special broadcast on ITV's prime-time Saturday slot, last weekend.

Simultaneously, the album's lead single Jealousy charted at Number 5.

McElderry's success follows his impressive win on reality TV show Popstar To Opera Star, earlier this summer.

0..Will Young: I was a wimp next to male model in Jealousy music video

After snapping on the Spandex as a circus performer for his latest video, Jealousy, Will Young says the look has grown on him as he blasted the male model he hired for making him look 'puny'.

Related Tags:Will YoungSimon FullerSimon CowellMatt CardleLondon..

Will Young has admitted he's sometimes acted like a prat

.‘Yesterday I walked around in black leggings for half a day,’ he said.

But he conceded he has some bulking up to do to keep up with the male models he hires for his extras.

‘I was jealous of the guy in the video because basically he made me look like a frigging weedy, puny little gimp,’ he said.

The singer also reckons the 13 tracks from his latest No.1 album Echoes would make a great musical – well for TV at least.

After transforming himself into a bona fide star over the last decade, Will says he’s got the perfect vision for the ‘cool’ project.

‘Basically it would be like 13 music videos,’ the former Pop Idol winner revealed during his catch-up with Guilty Pleasures.

On a serious note, Young sounded out a warning for reality signings after surviving the game for ten years after being steered by Simon Cowell’s rival Simon Fuller.

‘I have had periods where I haven’t enjoyed it,’ he admitted but said the hopefuls should not just follow the biggest pound signs.

‘If you align yourself with the wrong people who don’t want the same things that you want, then I think you get into trouble,’ he said.

‘Simon Fuller says that he has always managed me like he’s always wanted me being around for ten years.

He would say, “No don’t do that, we might make money from it but it’s going to harm you in the long run”, so I think I really needed people like that around me.’

In some parting advice to Matt Cardle, 28, and his rivals, the 32-year-old warned: ‘You have tough moments, sometimes you act like a prat, sometimes you’ve got to just handle it in the right way and I think that’s how you get on.’

Young will be back on stage next weekend to support next summer’s Paralympic athletes at Sainsbury’s Super Saturday concert in London.

Will Young interview: 'I want to take food from strangers' plates'

With the charts dominated by the fruits of Simon Cowell's proverbial televisual loins, it's now hard to imagine a time in music before The X Factor. Some acts, Like JLS, Alexandra Burke and the loveable SuBo go on to great things. Many do not - poor little Joe McElderry and so many more we could mention...

It's reassuring though that one of Cowell's original winners, Mr Will Young, is going strong after nine years and has firmly shaken loose from the shackles of Pop Idol's chains.

Will releases his fifth studio album, Echoes, this week, and Orange Music Store caught up with the talented singer in an exclusive chat to find out about his latest album, his take on the London riots, and not shying away from his sexuality...

Hi Will! When was the last time you felt the pangs of jealousy?

I get quite jealous living in London. Let's say I get my outfit together and I'll be going out. I walk outside and then immediately I see someone wearing a better outfit than me, do you ever get that - it's so annoying?

Rarely, but do continue.

I think 'this is it, this is who I want to be tonight' and then I see a guy wearing better trousers than me and I think 'I just don't want to be here anymore!' Joking aside, I'm not really a jealous person, it's not a nice emotion so I'm quite pleased I don't get jealous.

Do you ever get food envy when you're eating out though?

Major! I get major food envy, it's always my friend that has the nicer meal. Quite often I get the desire to reach over and try other people's meals. There's quite often a stranger's meal who I don't even know, particularly if they've got chips, you know that desire where you think, I'll just try one and they won't care? Yeah I always feel like I never make the right decision in restaurants. So maybe I am a jealous actually?

Is there anything else that digs at you, envy-wise, while we're on the subject?

I don't think there's anything else, I think that's why I like the idea of writing a song called 'Jealousy'. It's such a pervasive, such a negative emotion. I've seen it overtake people I know and I think it's a very hard one to get on top of. I think everyone does experience jealousy in one form or another you know?

Do you think jealousy is the best way to ruin a relationship?

I think jealousy can absolutely destroy a relationship. It can destroy friendships you know. I'm not jealous in relationships, its one of the things I don't experience. There are other things that I experience but not jealousy. However, I have seen it happen with other people and it destroys relationships. If they don't want to work out where its coming from then thats the end of their relationship. God that's a bit bleak isn't it?

You recently said you only recently became comfortable with your sexuality in recent years? Has this made you more open when writing songs?

I think that times are very different from 10 years ago. I don't worry about saying 'he' in a song. At the same time if I'm singing a cover, I don't mind singing about she. I think its a really good sign that as a popstar I can be open. I would never, and have never, pretended to be anything other than who I am. I think you're patronising and lying to your audience if you are.

Do you ever worry that someone will realise you're singing about them in one of your songs?

No I would never name check anyone. Can you imagine doing that? [sings]'do you think I better leave Bob right now?' I've written about heartache over the years and I will continue to. When my heart is blooming, there is loads of joy in my life and I'm in a relationship and I'm getting that from a friend or someone then I would write about it. But I would never put something in a song that would be damaging to that person or to myself.

In the video for 'Jealousy' you play a trapeze artist, did you have to do any training for it?

I did a little bit of training on the video yeah. I did two hours on the trapeze. I came up with the idea and I was so kind of hoodwinked by the idea of the glamour, glitz and outfits that I forgot that I'm actually scared of heights. I had to climb up this ladder on to this tiny little ledge and I froze. I told the directors 'I'm really cross because I can't even blame you for coming up with the idea'.

As one of reality TV's success stories, would you ever take a role as a talent show judge?

I do get asked this a lot because of where I came from and also because I have appeared on X Factor as a mentor and a judge with Cheryl Cole. The only thing is I think that audiences would get bored because I would like to give constructive advice. I couldn't sit there in front of a singer and not say how I felt because I'd want to say how they could improve. I couldn't sit there and say 'that was rubbish and you're never going to make it, I hate what your wearing'. I'd have to say something like, 'I think you could really change this' or 'I don't know if your performance was sensational enough'. But if it was the right show I think I would do it if I had the time.

You work with youth support charity Catch 22, which helps kids in poor and difficult situations. In light of the recent riots in the UK, what is your take on it all?

My take on what is happening all over the country is that I feel worry and I feel sadness that young people will be tarred with the same brush because of the actions of a very small minority. I think David Cameron using the word 'sick' is maybe not that useful. I think it is a reflection of government and society letting young people down over the last 15 years and that the family unit has dissipated. Teachers are held back by sometimes crazy laws and regulations. The community and the way that people associate with each other has been stripped away. If you don't feel socially responsible to anyone, they why are you going to care?

Also, I think behind that, if you don't really believe in yourself as a young person, and you don't care about yourself, then your not going to care about anyone else. So the only silver lining I see in this whole thing, in the work that we do at Catch 22, is we have projects in every single area where there was rioting and looting. So we know first hand that young people can change so quickly. They are far more savvy and quicker to react to good direction and belief than adults. Adults are babies, we don't change. I've seen it in Dagenham where the young kids didn't really want to be doing youth work, helping tend to elderly people's gardens. But soon after that they went to a war veteran and said, 'we'll do up your garden for you'. They made the effort, they wanted to do it, they thought about people around them. There is a silver lining, but there is a long way to go. I think the people that were criminals have to be punished no doubt, but I'm still optimistic.

Thanks Will. Download the new single 'Jealousy' and album 'Echoes' in the Orange Music Store now.

Will Young: Introducing him to America

By guest blogger Sarah Hamilton

I am lucky enough to have my blog (PopLedge) affiliated with Radio Crème Brulee and upon reviewing the latest Will Young album I immediately felt that Will Young’s new record would be a great addition to Radio Creme Brulee’s playlist. But before I post a review of the new album on here, I have to introduce this massive British pop star to the predominantly American reader base of the Radio Creme Brulee blog. So without further ado here is my introduction to Will Young.

Early Career:

Will Young first appeared on 2002’s TV talent show ‘Pop Idol,’ – an earlier and less-glossy incarnation of the X Factor. Simon Cowell was on the panel and already reveling in his ‘Mr Nasty’ role but the show itself still hadn’t yet reached it’s commercial peak. Will Young really made his mark by standing up to Simon Cowell during the audition process; this and his voice propelled him towards the final of the competition. The final consisted of two male contestants, Will and a younger singer called Gareth Gates – Gareth was perhaps the preferred winner for SyCo (Cowell’s record label). He was a cute kid popular with younger girls who also had an incredible story attached to him. He unfortunately had been afflicted with a pronounced stammer since birth and singing gave him a respite from this. Will was undoubtedly the better singer though and had performed consistently throughout the competition. Luckily the UK voted for the underdog and Will Young was crowned the winner of Pop Idol 2002.

Here is Will’s winning moment:

Will’s first album entitled ‘From Now On’ followed the ‘Pop Idol’ formula – the winners song was chosen for him in advance, it featured covers of the songs he’d sung throughout the auditions and a pretty terrible cover of the Beatles ‘The Long and Winding Road’ with the runner-up Gareth Gates. Luckily for us Will has more of a ‘Kelly Clarkson’ personality and has once his commitments to ‘Pop Idol’ were complete he took control of his career and his musical direction.

Following ‘From Now On’ Will released a further four original albums and a record-company enforced ‘Greatest Hits’ album which Will did not promote. His musical style progressed from pop to soul-pop and currently his sound is described as ‘down tempo electro-pop.’

If you want to catch up on Will’s back-catalog then I would recommend in chronological order:

Jealousy appears on Will’s latest LP with RCA records “Echoes” – a review of which I will post on here VERY soon!

~Quite a few of Wills vids on the page too :w00t:
