I ate a kebab last night. That's it really in a nutshell. No longer the powerful mulberry bag owner but a drunken student

We text Will Young...

...then let you have a nosey at our conversation

October 15, 2011

If you could have any super-power what would it be?

Flying. I always have flying dreams. Imagine not having to get a cab at the end of the night! How many times do you wish you could click your fingers and be home? It would be great.

Very true. Who would your ultimate music collaboration be with?

Björk. I think everything she does is amazing.

Would you wear a swan dress like she did?

If I had to wear one, I would do it.

What do people say to you when they see you in the street?

I've been living in Soho for a few months as I'm buying a new house and I've had a lot of: "Hello, Will. Leave Right Now!" from builders. It's so funny.

How's your love life right now?

I'm single and very happy to carry on flirting. I flirt with literally everyone.

What's the weirdest thing a fan's ever done?

There have been quite a few things over the years. There was one woman who used to dress her kid up as me. He was about 10, and she once turned up to my house late at night with him dressed up like me. It was very odd. I sent them home.

Eek, that does sound a bit odd. What's your freaky phobia?

Ice lolly sticks. I can't stand them - it's the taste of the wood. Imagine licking it! Eww, the dryness.

My trousers ripped on stage when I wasn't wearing any pants. This woman got a full frontal

If you could do something illegal and know you'd get away with it, would you do it?

Yes, for a parking ticket. But for murder or something? Probably not.

Are you still in touch with Gareth Gates?

I ran into him the other day actually. It was very sweet to see him. We have such a shared experience from Pop Idol. He seemed really good and he's doing well.

Not as well as you though, eh? Where's the weirdest place you've woken up?

In a wheelie bin on the street, and another time with my face in a loo-brush holder. Both were drink-induced and both very unpleasant. I also used to fall asleep in dog baskets at friends' houses a lot.

Do you remember your first kiss?

Yes, I do. She smoked and I didn't, and it was all quite washing machine-y. I was quite late, about 15 or 16. I was into guys really, but I felt like I had to do it. We did the stop, lock, snog thing for about 20 minutes. It wasn't great.

If heaven exists, what would you like God to say when you arrive at the pearly gates?

"Of course gays are welcome!"

Will's album Echoes is out now.

Only Young once

Name: Will Young

Age: 32

High point: Winning Pop Idol back in 2002.

Low point: Having a very hairy moment in Cameroon when a jealous male gorilla threw a rock at him, because one of the lady gorillas took a shine to him.

Thanks Chris. i missed getting that. Damn. :( Does anyone have the transcript please?

There wasn't one and no-one on Devoted scanned it either. I'll type it out for you.

Here you go:

“Women know I’m gay but I’ll flirt with anyone!”

While other winners of reality TV shows have struggled to follow up their initial success with long-term fame, original Pop Idol winner Will Young has proved he’s no one-hit wonder. Almost 10 years after he beat Gareth Gates in the TV talent show, Will has sold more than eight million albums worldwide, has gone on to carve out a successful acting career and recently released his fifth album, “Echoes”.

But despite having the biggest-selling single of the decade with Anything is Possible/Evergreen in 2002, the 32 year old reveals that he still struggles with the idea of being in the spotlight and is secretly relieved he’s “not as famous” as he used to be.

And the singer says that while he’s grateful for the positive attention he’s received over the years, he “doesn’t miss” getting chased by the paparazzi.

“I don’t get followed by the paps any more and I used to wonder how I would cope without it, but I really don’t miss it at all”, he reveals to Closer.

“Most of the time I forget I’m famous. Being famous is weird. You get to meet people you’d never normally meet, but you also see the worst of human behaviour”.

Will, who came out as gay a month after winning the ITV show, admits that much of his resistance to fame comes from the way it’s affected his relationships.

“It was harder with my last relationship because we got a lot of attention”, he reveals. “You don’t want to be having an argument with a camera in your face”.

He split from long-term boyfriend Conor in 2007 and has been single ever since – but says he’s happy to focus on his career.

“I tend to have records out at the end of the summer so this is a busy time for me, and I’m so focused on this album that I’m not looking for anyone”, he says. But he adds, laughing: “I know what will happen now , I’ll meet someone!”And he concedes that he’s a “terrible flirt” – with both men and women.

“Women know that I’m gay, but I’ll flirt with anyone”, he smiles. “I’m the biggest flirt. Terri, my manager, says that I’m always flirting with the girls in the office, and I do. I really like being chatted up!” he laughs. “I’m not the kind of guy who goes up to someone, but if someone comes up to me, that’s great” Who doesn’t like being chatted up? If they don’t , they’re arseholes!”

In 2009, Will spoke out about his twin brother Rupert’s battle with depression, saying at the time: “He first cut his wrists when he was 18. I became his protector, the one who always calmed things down”.

Now, he says his brother is “doing really well” and working with UK charity The Depression Alliance.

“I get mild depression too”, confesses Will. “I cope with it now. I had therapy for six years and I know the things that I need to do, so I watch out for the highs and for the tiredness and hunger. I manage it and it’s OK. It’s part of what I do and who I am. I wouldn’t want to change it. I wouldn’t want to be less sensitive and less of a thinker”.

Will also admits that he’s “changed loads” since appearing on Pop Idol. “In some ways I don’t think I’ve changed at all, and in others I think I’ve changed immeasurably”, he says. “But I think that’s growing up. I’m really happy to be 32!”

He adds that his latest album is “very different” to his previous four, and admits that it felt “risky” after being out of the music scene since 2008.

“The entire business has changed in three years”, he admits. “It makes me feel old and also really grateful that I’m not a new artist who’s under pressure to have that first hit. And there’s all the pressure to be on Twitter! I do Tweet, but I’m not very good at it. I don’t like it. It can come across as a bit dishonest”.

He adds: “For a while, I think music stopped being so much fun. But I love that there are so many boy bands around now. I was on Alan Carr: Chatty Man with One Direction the other day. They’re so young and I was like: “I really want your skin!”

As well as singing, Will has become a respected actor and earlier this year starred in supernatural drama Bedlam on Sky Living. And he says he hasn’t ruled out more acting in the future.

“I’ve got a couple of things coming up,” he reveals. “They’re theatre projects – but they’re not finalised. If I do them I then want to take a year off and go around the world in 2014/15. “I’ve got this new Mercedes G-class wagon and I want to drive from South to North Africa,” he says. “But I have to go on a mechanics course first – I don’t even know how to change a tyre!”

Thanks Sunday. Something else to look out for.

Editing to say thanks munchkin for typing up the article. Not sure if I've read it before.

Thanks girls. That looks like a magazine that comes with the Dorset Echo - wonder if anyone can get hold of it and scan it for us. Maybe Iscagill could do it for us. It looks to me like an article rather than a TV show.

Edit - I've posted about it over on Baby D.
