The one show just had Sting on and they asked him abut X factor and music industry..he said he watched it for the first time the other night and it was dire  ...that everyone was trying to perform like someone already out without being themself's..

They said a few other things but what made me smile the most was the fact that they were saying the only way to make money if you were a singer now is to do live gigs..and Christina said..it goes back to talent..if its not really there in the first place then you have a problem.

Yep..that means Will's well and truly sorted then. not sure about the others out there though.

Saw him on there but had the sound turned down. These kind of shows are the only options open for most established credible artists to try & sell their music on tv. Will was well ahead of the game appearing on so many varied programmes in the lead up to Let It Go.

Ooh,,intriguing..

Editing a video interview I did with Will Young, I forgot how lovely he is. And he's so talented!

I did read somewhere that the stupid law about licensing live gigs is being repealed if the venue holds less than 100 people. So hopefully clubs and pubs will be able to have musicians again playing live.

Sting said that he was "appalled" with X-Factor!

I bet he wouldn't be too "appalled" if he was asked to perform on it though if he was flogging an album.

Will Young Exclusive Interview and Album Giveaway

It doesn't seem that long ago that the nation was talking about 'Will and Gareth' instead of 'John and Edward' but it was, in fact, seven years since Will Young gripped the nation by standing up to Simon Cowell and winning the first Pop Idol.

Now, as he releases his greatest hits, Will sits down with www.nus.org.uk to talk about student politics, X Factor and his new album.

Enter the competitionto win Will Young's new album.

Did you ever expect to be making a greatest hits album?

I always hoped to and am so pleased and proud to be here looking back on the last 8 years

What do you consider to be your greatest hit?

I think ‘Evergreen’ was massive and is still the biggest selling single of the decade whilst leave right now was a song that really boosted my career into another place but ‘Who am I’ is my favourite song, the lyrics still resonate largely with me and I never tire of singing it. I also love the video I did for it.

How did you approach your latest album? How much more flexibility do you have than, say, your first/second album?

I was as flexible on the last album ‘Let it go’ as I have been for the last three albums. On the last one I really embraced pop songs and set out to write singles.

Have you kept in contact with anyone from Pop Idol?

I am still in contact with people from time to time and ran into Gareth at V Festival which was great. We all had such a shared experience it is always a pleasure to see any of the guys.

What do you think of the current format of X Factor?

I think it has made it bigger than ever and great fun to watch on a Saturday night.

Do you have any regrets?

Not telling a teacher at school what I truly thought of him, otherwise I have no regrets…you learn from your mistakes, hopefully!

You studied politics at University, where you involved at all in student politics?

I wasn’t involved in student politics I am afraid. I was more of a footlights person so did the musicals and also got involved in university RAG.

How did you feel being invited and appearing on Question Time?

I was really chuffed and loved the challenge of it, I had to swot up a lot but I think it is a fantastic show and can’t wait to go on again.

You’ve had a brief foray into film and also been performed on the west end, is this an aspect of your career that you want to build upon?

I really enjoy the acting, I have just done a part in Skins and also Miss Marple so am enjoying the diversity of life at the moment there is no reason why you can’t have two careers on the go...well that is what I am striving for anyway!

Will Young's new single Hopes and Fears is released on 9 November with his new album The Hits out from 16 November 16. To win one of five copies of his new album, enter the competition here

Interview: Will Young

by Gordon Barr, Evening Chronicle

On November 6, 2009

SHOULD Will Young’s music career ever falter, he knows exactly what he wants to do.

“Join the Antiques Roadshow,” he beams to me. “I could be the new Bunny Campione!

“I love that show. I get really weepy about it.”

Will is in fine form when we chat, and the day he feels the need to join Roadshow shouldn’t be any time soon.

His new single Hopes and Fears is out on Monday, followed on November 16 by the release of The Hits, and three days later a gig at Newcastle City Hall.

It’s all go for the 30-year-old, and he’s loving every minute of it.

When we chat, he’s had a not-so-very rock and roll day, though.

“I met the head of my record company for breakfast, had acupuncture – been having it for two months, it is amazing, keeps your body and energy levels in check.

“It is really beneficial. It has changed my life quite a bit. I feel amazing – to the point I get up at 7am to have an appointment – so it must be working! Then I had a falafel on Portobello Market and wandered around in the sun.”

It is eight years since Will Young won Pop Idol but even he is surprised he has a greatest hits CD coming out.

“I’m still a bit of the old school that you do a greatest hits after 20 years,” he says. “But I think it has changed now. Ideally I would probably still have waited another 10 years but there are more than enough songs to make up a greatest hits.”

The facts speak for themselves. Will Young is the original ‘Pop Idol’ and his number one Evergreen remains the bestselling single of this decade.

Young is also the most successful new British male solo artist of the Noughties, selling over eight million records to date across his four multi-platinum studio albums. He has received an astonishing 10 Brit nominations, receiving two awards, and has twice been voted the UK’s favourite artist of all time (in commercial radio polls).

Bringing all his classic pop songs together for the first time, The Hits is a celebration of his extraordinary career so far.

“What I really want to do is make quilts and go surfing!” he jokes.

“I really enjoyed the last tour and the prospect of this tour, great musicians and hopefully a good performance from me to carry the show along.

“I really enjoy it more these days and I am more confident with the audience than I used to be and I feel I don’t have to dress up as much.

“I still love those theatrics. Maybe I’m getting more of it out of the acting now.

“I’ve always loved choreography, but I think I am a better dancer when I’m not singing. I would never say I was the level of Usher or Justin Timberlake, but I trained to do it and I still do ballet.

“I probably prefer it now for one-off performances or videos. I don’t think I would get as much enjoyment out of it as I used to for an entire show.”

A man of many talents, we can look forward to seeing Will on our TV screens in acting roles in the near future.

“I’ve just done a Miss Marple and I’ve just done Skins too. They are opposite ends.

In one I felt very young and trendy in the other I felt really old and untrendy.

“But I just love it, I get so much enjoyment from it. It is so different to doing the music. It is so exciting to work with a team of people and to not be heading the thing, but to take direction.

“It is such hard work but really worth it.

“People realise I take it seriously and it’s not just a whimsical thing. I think Miss Marple is out soon – The Mirror Crack’d.”

Will also turns his talents to mentoring as often as he can, teaching aspiring entertainers about the business.

“I’ve done a few classes over the years. It is something, when I get the time, I really enjoy.

“I think it is a great thing to do, to impart information. You don’t realise how much you learn over the years.

“I’m still learning about vocal techniques, I wouldn’t pretend to be an expert on that. All those things, and styling of a song, performance, approach to work, listening, how you act off the stage as well as on, all those things are so crucial.

“You learn a lot about what you do yourself when you teach it to other people. It works for both parties. I wish I could do more of it.”

Fans of his won’t need to wait too long to hear his latest work, with a new album of original songs planned for next spring.

“The album is a project I have been working on and talking about on and off for about three years. It is more upbeat pop music. It started when I started doing remixes, doing stuff with Groove Armada and other people and it has developed. It is good to do different things as long as you are doing it with right intentions.”

Will turned 30 in January. “It’s still an excuse for a party. I’ve been partying constantly since January. I love being 30. I’m really happy. You get wiser and more comfortable in your skin. That is the best thing about getting older. You learn – to a degree, I’m more functional than I used to be.”

Of his Pop Idol days, he tells me: “I feel disassociated from it in some ways because it feels like a lifetime ago, but I feel really proud of it. I am ever grateful to it.”

He doesn’t spend time looking back though. “There’s more to look forward to – Antiques Roadshow for one!” he laughs.

Will Young is at Newcastle City Hall on November 19. The Hits is out Nov 16.

Rikki has still vote my ; Will Young reveals he has no regrets about picking X Factor rejectand how therapy kept him on road to fame

By JOHN DINGWALL

Will Young has no regrets after putting Scots wannabe Rikki Loney into the X Factor finals.

Having gone through the prototype TV talent show at the start of his career, when he won 2002's Pop Idol, Will gave something back when he joined Cheryl Cole to put the boys through X Factor boot camp. He helped her choose the three who would representher acts in the finals of the TV talent show.

The pair settled on Joe McElderry, Lloyd Daniels and Loney, who was voted off.

But Will insists the Scots singer deserved his place in the final 12 and that he could still go on to have a successful pop career - provided he can pick himself up, dust himself down and get back in the ring.

He said: "I have watched most of the shows and I really enjoyed helping Cheryl.

"What I loved about Rikki was that he had tried so many times and had such a big heart. People should be rewarded for that. When someone is so positive and has tried so hard you can't help but think he deserved a chance. That is what I thought about him.

"He got down to the last 12 and has already proven himself. If I had to pick a winner, I'd say I like Joe. He could win and I think John and Edward are very entertaining."

Like the 15 million or so who watch X Factor, Will is only too aware of the chemistry that appears to be brewing between Cheryl - who is married to Chelsea defender Ashley Cole - and fellow judge Simon Cowell.

He said: "I wouldn't blame Simon if he had a thing for Cheryl. She is very pretty."

It's now been eight years sinceWill won Pop Idol, which means he is living proof that shows like X Factor and Britain's Got Talent can supply a long-term career to those successful enough to win a TV talent contest.

He triumphed in the very first Pop Idol in 2002, beating hot favourite Gareth Gates.

Within a week, he had topped the charts with Evergreen, which became the fastestselling single in chart history with sales of 1,108,659 copies within the first seven days alone, and 1.7 million in total.

But it is his longevity which sets him apart from other wannabes who have disappeared from the charts almost as quickly as they set them on fire.

Will's 2002 debut album From Now On topped the charts. It was followed by three more hit albums, Friday's Child in 2003, 2005's Keep On and Let It Go in 2008.

Will releases a new single Hopes & Fears today. Always out to surprise us, in the video he is pregnant.

He said: "The prosthetic belly really made my knees hurt. I now empathise with pregnant women. I think all men should wear a big tummy to make them realise what they do to their women."

A best of album, The Hits, featuring singles from his four albums is released a week after the single.

Having sold more than eight million records to date and winning two Brit Awards, he is arguably the most successful British male artist of the decade.

So it's little wonder he believes the likes of X Factor and Britain's Got Talent will survive in one form or another for years to come. Will said: "Things evolve and Pop Idol, when it started, had evolved out of the old idea of a talent show. The stakeswere higher and the biggest thing was public participation.

"If I look back, the thing that has been amazing is not just the singing career but all the other things too. There is the acting I've done, talking at the Oxford Union, having a Southbank Show about me and the people I've met. People wouldn't havethought that could have come from a Saturday night TV show."

Having been inadvertently outed by Darius Danesh prior to winning Pop Idol, Will is relatively diplomatic over Dannii's outing of Danyl Johnson live on air last month.

But he has little sympathy for Daily Mail columnist Jan Moir over what he is certain was her blatantly homophobic stance on civil partnerships in the wake of Boyzone star Steven Gately's recent death.

He said: "If you look at how many pop stars are gay and out publicly, there are a lot more than at the start of the decade but there is a way to go.

"There are homophobic people but the legal developments for gay rights in the last 10 years have been phenomenal. There is still work to be done. Someone was recently beaten to death in Trafalgar Square for being gay. There are still homophobic attacks.

"Jan Moir's column could not be seen as anything other than a homophobic attack. I could talk for a whole hour about it but would rather not give her the column inches. It saddened me to see that kind of column."

Surprisingly, when you take into account Will's successes, it's surprising he considered quitting the music business altogether due to self-esteem issues.

He lacked the confidence to meet people and feared going out among the public despite playing to thousands of fans at live concerts, and his videos and TV appearances in front of millions.

He admits he just wasn't equipped to handle the success after being crowned the first-ever Pop Idol and he became a recluse.

Will said: "Everything takes time. There is no fast track to learning anything whether it is suddenly having a lot of money, having fame or being responsible for a business.

"Now I look back and I am very proud of the way I dealt with it. I didn't fall apart. For someone like myself who is a thinker and methodical, it all happened very fast. I am more like a thoughtful snail. Luckily, I had really great people around me."

In the end, he booked a therapist to help him find that happiness and contentment he felt was missing from his life.

He said: "I chose therapy, in the same way that if your car is broken you take it to the garage. If you have a problem, you see an expert. It has made such a difference for me. At that stage, three years ago, it was very important. I learned to enjoylife a lot more and I learned a lot about myself.

"Now I have a lot more confidence and live more in the moment. I don't think modern society caters for happy people as they don't spend as much money as unhappy people. Anyone can get therapy by going to their doctor. It's there on the national health."

Will added: "I've learned it is great to get accolades but the things that matter most are small things that are personal to you. I am not taking away from the Brits but simpler moments like going to rehearsals with the band are what I get much morepleasure from.

"I feel fantastic now and enjoy everything I do. Looking back, it was all so quick and busy and I couldn't enjoy it, but now I can. I never have a bad day's work. I love my job."

Will's own problems dealing with fame make him empathetic towards people like Britain's Got Talent contestant Susan Boyle, who became a worldwide star overnight.

He said: "I can definitely empathise with her but I can't pretend to understand what she is going through because I don't know her."

Will is to play Glasgow's SECC & Clyde Auditorium on November 12 and Aberdeen Music Hall the next night as part of his UK tour.

He said: "I love it in Scotland. We had some great gigs there last time. It's brilliant. I always love coming to Scotland."

And fans may get a sneak preview of his next album, on which he plans to go electro.

Will said: "It has been an ongoing project of the last three years with more upbeat tunes than before. It is a niche project but the record company are excited. It is an electro-pop album and it will come out after the hits album. "But there'll be no Phil Oakey fringe and you won't be seeing me in dayglo anytime soon." © 2009 Sunday Mail; Glasgow (UK). Answers the question that the new album will be funded by the label, so he must have signed a new contract.

Thanks to Bumbling for this.
