Duncan Bannatyne and Will Young star in new domestic violence campaign
Celebrities and sportsmen including Duncan Bannatyne, Ugo Monye, Tom Aikens and Will Young are to front a new national campaign to reduce domestic violence.

Women’s Aid Real Man, Ugo Moyne

Women’s Aid and Grey London are launching the campaign to encourage men to become part of the solution to ending violence against women and children.

Titled ‘Real Man’, the aim is to highlight the active role that men have in helping to stop domestic abuse and asks all ‘real men’ to support Women’s Aid in doing so.

The campaign uses images of well-known men from the world of sports, entertainment and business wearing ‘Real Man’ t-shirts designed by Henry Holland and posing with props to challenge the stereotype of what a ‘Real Man’ is – with the message that Real Men aren’t violent or abusive towards women.

The national campaign will launch on 10 June through print, digital, PR and in-store channels to coincide with the start of the World Cup. Government research has shown that big sporting events such as the World Cup can result in increased rates of domestic violence. During the 2006 World Cup, reports of domestic abuse increase by nearly a third (30%) on England match days.

The campaign will run for the rest of the year. Women’s Aid chief executive Nicola Harwin says the campaign will help Women’s Aid engage with men, the majority of whom are not perpetrators of violence against women, to support its work to end violence against women and children.

The ‘Real Man’ campaign T-shirts will be exclusively available from Debenhams, throughout June for £10

Thanks Bev.

Domestic violence has always been an issue close to Will's heart . Didn't he do a thesis about it at Uni. Not the first time his name has been linked with Duncan Bannatyne.

Bless him, isn't he lovely?

I think Duncan Bannatyne has said in an interview he 's a fan of Will's music. Will's also been pictured at an event with Peter Jones.

He was on The One Show with Duncan during the LIG promo.

There was something mentioned about a charity drive on Radio 4 a couple of weeks back when Will was being interviewed but we've not heard anything further. Wonder if it's connected with this.

There was an awards event in March for WA.

Thanks Bev - I didn't see this over on D  .

P.S. Just found it in the Blogs Thread.

Will Supports Women’s Aid’s ‘Real Man’ Campaign

Women’s Aid is launching its ‘Real Man’ campaign in July’s edition of Cosmopolitan, encouraging men to become part of the solution to ending violence against women.

Will, who’s been an ambassador of the domestic violence charity since 2003, will feature in a collection of images aiming to challenge the stereotype of what a ‘real man’ is, with the message that Real Men aren’t abusive or violent towards women.

A range of other high-profile celebrities are joining Will in adding their support, including Huey from Fun Lovin’ Criminals, Duncan Bannatyne OBE, TV presenter Gethin Jones and actor Max Beesley.

Will and the other ‘Real Men’ are pictured wearing T-shirts designed exclusively by Henry Holland for the campaign. They’re available throughout June from Debenhams, alongside women’s T-shirts with the slogan ‘I’m a fan of a real man’.

The campaign has been launched to coincide with the World Cup: during the 2006 contest, reports of domestic abuse increased by 30% on England match days.

Will said: "I have been working with Women's Aid since 2003 when I became the charity's first Ambassador, and am so pleased to be able to be a part of the 'Real Man' campaign against domestic violence. I studied domestic violence at university and feel passionately that we need to raise awareness of violence against women and children and refuse to ignore it. Just by speaking out against domestic violence and being supportive of those directly affected we can all make a positive difference."

The July edition of Cosmopolitan hits stores on 10th June

Celeb men team up to support domestic violence charity

http://www.heatworld.com/images/94984_610x370_STD/2010/6/images/Cosmo_main.jpg

There’s nothing we like better than a real man here at heatworld, especially as there seem to less and less the older we get. Thank goodness, then, for these fine celebrity specimens of Real Men. Ricky Whittle, Will Young and Gethin Jones have joined the likes of Max Beesley, Duncan Bannatyne and Danny Care to help raise awareness of the charity Women’s Aid. Posing in these rather cute T-shirts for the July issue of Cosmopolitan (on sale 10 June), Will and co are doing their best to redefine what it means to be a “real man”. The Women’s Aid campaign aims to promote the message that Real Men aren't violent or abusive towards women because – rather worryingly – reports of domestic violence actually increase during big sporting events such as the World Cup. Will Young said of the campaign, “I studied domestic violence at university and feel passionately that we need to raise awareness of violence against women and children and refuse to ignore it.” You can pick up your very own Real Man T-shirt, which was specially designed by Henry Holland, exclusively at Debenhams during June. But for now, just enjoy the image of Ricky Whittle cuddling a little fluffy dog. We know we did.

Thanks Bev. Great that Heatworld are still loving Will & they highlighted his awareness of the issue.

Women's Aid campaign in the Sun now: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/woman...-end-abuse.html

It explains why they show men with 'girly' props - hence Will doesn't need one.

But I still don't see why a man has to be in touch with his feminine side in order not to be violent against women and children. I still think people making personal remarks about Will are missing the point. He's gay so can't be a 'real' man

Julie over on D has posted this and I agree - but it's so sad he still has to do this.

I think the point is you don't have to be aggressive and macho to be a real man it's playing with stereotypes. Will would have known exactly what he was doing with this pose and it is a challenge to all those who have stereotypical ideas about what makes a real man. He's the only one making a hetero /macho type pose-playing against the gay stereotype while all the others heterosexual men are doing the opposite carrying what is perceived to be 'feminine/less manly/gay type objects.

He's challenging people and will expect the usual homophobic comments-he's a brave man and I admire him even more for doing this.
