Will Young loves friendly northern life in Ramsbottom

Will Young is also filming a new drama for Living TV

When pop star and actor Will Young noticed that his dog was missing, his Greater Manchester neighbours threw him a bone.

“Literally the whole of the village were out looking for the dog,” says the former Pop Idol winner, who has been living on the outskirts of Ramsbottom for the past two months.

“It was great. People are friendlier and more down to earth here. I really feel like part of the community.”

While Will may be feeling the community spirit in the north west, it was spirits of a different kind that brought him to the city.

For the singer-turned-actor is currently filming spooky new drama Bedlam for Living TV.

The six-part series, which has been shot at locations in Whalley Range and Ancoats, revolves around the ghostly goings on in an asylum that has been converted into trendy flats.

Living TV have big plans for the show, which will also guest star Gavin And Stacey star Joanna Page and Strictly Come Dancing’s Kara Tointon, and which is due to appear on screens in early 2011.

This is the second time Will has worked as an actor in Manchester.

Back in 2007, he received rave reviews for his leading role in Noel Coward’s play The Vortex at the Royal Exchange theatre.

And since being back, he tells me he’s being throwing himself into cultural life here – enjoying evenings at the Cornerhouse and dancing away at the Warehouse Project in the city centre.

Will, who has just finished recording his sixth album, says: “I love being back in Manchester. There’s so much going on. I think amazing things happen here.

“This time I’ve really embraced it because last time I was working during the evenings. This time it’s mostly days, so I can get out in the evening.”

Although Will is enjoying nights on the town, he’s loving the respite of the countryside. Originally from the rolling hills of Berkshire, he’s pleased to get back to horse-riding and quiet country walks up in Rammy.

He says: “Because I lived in the city during The Vortex I wanted to be out.

“It’s just good when you finish the day. I like being on my own and I like having a space to myself.

“I’m not missing being in the city because I can come in and get my fix of things, but I also love being in the countryside. So to be honest, it’s kind of really perfect.”

Thanks TT just finished reading that over on D.

I like being on my own and I like having a space to myself.

Knew it. Some 'sadness' over there because he always seem to be on his own. I did say he likes to potter about on his own. I do too - so much better than having to decide things with your companion. :P

Hope he found the dog in the end he didn't say. :o

He seems to enjoy being up there doesn't he.

Looking good about #6 - hope it's true

I often think that when people report seeing Will they just aren't interested in who he is with but I do agree about him enjoying his own company.

I doubt he'd have trouble finding 'company' if he so chose to  :P
