15. Will Young

Before the careers of Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, or Adam Lambert took off, there was Will Young. In February 2002, Young rose to fame as the winner of the British television talent contest Pop Idol, making him the first winner ever of the now worldwide Idol franchise. Young’s first post-Idol single was a cover of Westlife’s “Evergreen,” which went on to become one of the fastest selling singles in UK history and one of the biggest selling singles of the 2000s, with over 1.8 million copies sold. In March 2002, right at the beginning of Young’s career, he publicly came out to News of the World stating, “I feel it’s time to tell my fans I’m gay… For me it’s normal and nothing to be ashamed about. I’m gay and I’m comfortable with that. I really don’t know what the fuss is about.” Young became one of the first pop artists to begin his career out of the closet, and his openness about his sexuality proved not to cause any ripples whatsoever. In 2003, Young won his first BRIT award as Best Breakthrough Artist for the release of his debut album From Now On. Young’s second album Friday’s Child produced the hit “Your Game” which earned him his second BRIT Award in 2005. Young has since established himself as far more than another reality television show winner, selling over eight million records from his four multi-platinum studio albums, with four Number One singles, and twice voted as the U.K.’s favorite artist of all time.

Will was NOT Simon Cowell's first success..what a bloody cheek! as if he had any say in Wills career since that first year.. Yes he Can claim the teletubbies and power rangers..thats about his bloody level...he has spent his whole career copying other people's lead..he's even copying Simon fullers face book idea..what a prat. <_<

Career

Cowell and Fuller were once good friends when they worked together on Pop Idol in the UK, but they later fell out when Cowell launched The X Factor.

Three years later, Cowell went into business with Freemantle Media to make his own talent show - The X Factor. His private rivalry with Fuller could no longer be contained.

Fuller filed seven lawsuits and a settlement was reached in 2005 that gave him executive producer status on The X Factor. Cowell retains full creative control and gets a cut of all of the money made by the contestants

Cowell went on to establish Britain's Got Talent, and is now on a quest to take over America.

Pop Idol's Will Young was Cowell's first success but the music mogul has proven to be more than a one-trick pony; he has also converted television shows, such as Mr Blobby, The Power Rangers and the Teletubbies, into musical successes and has signed acts including Westlife, Leona Lewis, Cher Lloyd and many more to his record label, Syco - a joint venture between Cowell and Sony.

Fuller by contrast moved on to manage the Spice Girls. Although they eventually sacked him, he reportedly made £50 million from that venture.

He then developed pop combo S Club 7 into a total entertainment package with a TV series and an S Club 7 film, although the movie never materialised as the group split in 2003.

Fuller then went on to create American Idol, but since Cowell has left the judging panel for the new series viewer numbers have shrunk to 25million, seven million fewer than the same time last year.

Fuller does more than music though - his management company, 19 Entertainment, works with clients including the Beckham's and Andy Murray.

Ironically, Cowell's rise to fame and fortune came via Fuller, who, while developing the Pop Idol format, took him on as a judge.

Cowell bit him in the bum with X Factor and looks set to challenge Fuller's success for the second time in their careers – but this time the battle will be waged in America rather than the UK.

Face Off Winner round one: It's a tricky one, but we're going to go with Fuller who has gone beyond music and even ventured into film and sport.

X Factor USA versus American Idol

X Factor USA will follow the same format as the UK series, but the winner of X Factor USA is set to bag a five million dollar recording deal (£3.1m) - thought to be the biggest guaranteed prize in television history

X Factor also allows a broader age range for contestants than Idol – singers who are 12 years old are eligible and there is no upper age limit, whereas American Idol has an age limit of 15 to 28.

Unlike Idol, X Factor will allow groups as well as solo artists to compete.

From Tuesday viewers of Idol will be able to cast votes through Facebook, along with the previous options of phone and text message.

Now it seems that X Factor is also jumping on the bandwagon as there are reportedly negotiations to allow viewers of X Factor and US X Factor to cast votes through Facebook.

The Idol series has now been screened in 11 countries. It's still holding strong in the ratings, but it's showing its age, with its most recent season premiere dipping 18% among the crucial 18-to-49 demographic.

Face Off Winner round two: Cowell - he's dared take on American Idol and has upped the stakes with that whopping record deal and a more inclusive entry system for contestants of all ages

Wealth

Despite the two being around the same age, Simon Cowell, 51, is worth a mere £165 million. Simon Fuller, 50, can boast of a fortune estimated at around £350 million.

Face Off Winner round three: Simon Fuller wins the round and the contest. Although he's shy of the cameras he's certainly not shy of a bob or two and entertainment industry insiders insist he is the more powerful of the two, although that may change if X Factor USA takes off...

Hope I haven't spoilt it for you Sunday. :)

It was the presenters that kept mentioning his own projects with Will keep dragging the conversation back to Catch 22. Such an endearing quality not out to sell himself above all else, even though we are all gagging to hear more. Still there'll be plenty of time for all that in the coming months.

Definition of a Catch-22.

Definition of a Catch-22.

Catch 22 are a fabulous charity, this year Will Young is running a marathon to raise money to support their work.

I’m considering supporting him through his justgiving page.

But I find myself in a catch-22 of my own. I’ve found out that Will has said that if he raises £40,000 he’ll do next year’s marathon in a mankini. I’d love him to raise loads of money, but I’m not sure London needs to see him in a mankini.

So should I donate?

I’ve had a look and he’s well on the way – I think he’ll hit the total whether or not I donate, so I might as well do so. Why don’t you too?

Or click here to donate to the charity without boosting Will’s mankini chances.
