British singer Will Young proved his dedication to training for the upcoming London marathon by running across the U.K. capital to reach the Brit Awards ceremony last month (Feb11).

The Leave Right Now hitmaker is preparing to jog 26.4 miles (42.2 kilometres) on 17 April (11) in aid of Catch22, a British charity which helps disadvantaged youngsters.

Young has been fitting in his training around work trips to places including Los Angeles and southern Africa - and even donned his running gear to dash to the annual Brit Awards prizegiving at the O2 Arena in south-east London.

He tells Bbc Breakfast, "I was in L.A. and then I was on a charity visit in Zambia and Namibia, so it's been a balancing act (work and training)...

"Even for the Brits, I was doing an award, and I ran to the O2 from home. You can do it, I just look a bit odd when I turn up in Lycra. People did look at me and say, 'That's a strange outfit Will, running leggings'."

Just a quickie

A new update on the audience figures for Bedlam`s final episode. It is a little technical, but these figures are much improved, than the original overnight figures given in the media guardian.

Article from Broadcast about how PVR usage might be affecting broadcasters' decisions on recommissioning

Catch-up figures aiding recommissions

Sky Living’s original supernatural drama Bedlam ended with a final consolidated figure of 647,000 (3%), just behind the Monday 10pm average of 700,000 (3%). With repeats, it totaled 787.000 (3%) - with over 400,000 of that via the PVR.

Catch-up figures aiding recommissions

1 April, 2011 | By Stephen Price

Traditional linear broadcasters have in recent times felt somewhat besieged by the inexorable march of technology. But one form of technology might be turning out to be more of a champion of old style TV.

Click here for the top 250 consolidated shows

Technology moves so fast that now we are having to get our heads round stuff like the concept of “cloud computing”.

The PVR, relatively old hat these days, is practically an extra on-demand channel now and playing an increasingly important role in re-commissioning decisions. Smaller digital channels have for a long time been aware of the difference recording can make.

The networks, which not so long ago were vaguely aware of it but not that bothered since it hardly made that much difference to them, now look to the final rating more intently because for some shows, especially drama, recording can add a million or more to the live figure. And that might make the difference between a re-commission or the axe.

Silk, BBC1’s legal drama got the good news of a second run this week.

The series average based on live viewing was 4.95m (20%). That’s okay but for a Tuesday with relatively soft opposition and for a drama with broad appeal it might be slightly underpowered.

But a week later – and with a further week of consolidation remaining – the series average is 5.9m/21%.With all other things considered that makes series two less of a risky punt.

ITV1’s Law and Order: UK, which is suffering under the yoke of Waking the Dead, is benefiting from consolidation to the main channel and ITV1+1.

The 14 March episode went from a live ITV1-only figure of 4m (16%) to 5m (17%) including recording and +1.

Since Waking The Dead turned up the +1 channel, it has grown from adding 150,000 to nearly 350,000 to the final figure. The 21 March episode consolidated to 4.6m – about a million more than live.

Whether this is enough to fulfil its strategic role as a reliable, solid, economically viable long runner is a more difficult call but at least it’s in the game.

Elsewhere this week, Mrs Brown celebrated the news of series two with a corking result, Channel 5’s The Mentalist recovered from a comic deflation on recording while on the same night FX’s True Blood more than doubled. ITV1’s Monroe looks like a returner now and Sky Living’s Bedlam finished well.

On Monday, Mrs Brown’s Boys live rating of 2.8m (21%) grew by over a million to record 3.8m (24%) at 10.40pm.

On Friday, Channel 5’s The Mentalist slipped after a couple of strong weeks in the teeth of Comic Relief. Recording of nearly 500,000 saw the US crime drama finish on 2m (8%), the third best of the series.

As Comic Relief decamped to BBC2 at 10pm, FX’s True Blood went from 300,000 to 640,000; an increase of 112%. This is what happens generally to True Blood; what the opposition might be is increasingly less relevant.

ITV1’s Monroe climbed from 5.1m (21%) to 5.7m (22%), the sort or performance which will make a return more likely.

Sky Living’s original supernatural drama Bedlam ended with a final consolidated figure of 647,000 (3%), just behind the Monday 10pm average of 700,000 (3%). With repeats, it totaled 787,000 - with over 400,000 of that via the PVR.
