Will Young: 'Young people feel lost today'

 

Will Young has said that he is "worried" that all young people will be "pigeonholed" in the same category following the UK riots.

 

The singer has worked with UK charity Catch22, which helps young people throughout the country with advice and employment guidance.

 

"I have mixed views with what's been going on because I've worked with Catch22, we work with young people throughout the country," he explained on The One Show. "I feel worried that young people will be tarred with the same brush, because it's the minority of people that have been doing these vandalist acts."

 

Young, who has appeared on BBC's Question Time in the past, said that he believed that young people feel "lost" due to the government's lack of support.

 

He added: "I feel like society and government of the last 15 years have let young people down. There's been a breakdown on family, teachers can't comfort a child, I feel like there's not a stable basis that young people need, and that they're lost. I feel like this is a culmination of what government has been taking away from people. People don't feel socially responsible to anyone.

 

"With the work that I do with Catch22, young people need very little to change their life around and I really worry that there's going to be this pigeonholing that young people in this country are just evil and wrong and feral, and that's not the case. Something does need to be done."
