Have reviewed echoes yet TT ?

Just finished reviewing it.

Very positive giving it the highest rating of the night 4 out of 5.

Started by comparing it with the Lenny Kravitz album. Criticised Kravitz for addressing big political issues with banal trite lyrics. In contrast he thought Will said the simple things, talking about love situations, which hit home harder & are more direct & honest. Jo Wiley said how Will was always a joy to speak to & the last time she spoke to him he was so excited about getting Richard X on board. Fraser MCAlpine highly rated Richard X's sumptious production. Said there were lots of sad wistful songs & that Will was a beautiful singer.

Then they played Silent Valentine & he commented was an example of the mournful downbeat sound that was so simple yet effective. Said even the track Happy Nowis sad & Will's tremulous quality to his voice deliver these so well.

Said all connections with Cowell were long forgotten even though Echoes has been released the week X Factor returned. Thought it was fascinating how Will had taken himself seriously straightaway when he probably had no right to do so given he came from a competition, but by doing this & the decisions he had made , made others in the industry take him seriously. Jo Wiley mentioned him doing Hey Ya in the Live Lounge & how he'd never lost his passion for music. Frazer added tht LRN was an amazing song & ATL fantastic & Jo agreed.

His only real criticism was he thought the album was a little long. Would have preferred a couple less tracks. Talked about this when reviewing the other albums too. Finished by saying Wil has a MJ quality to his voice & he should cover one of his songs.

Rounded up by advertising Will being at the radio 2 gig in Hyde Park.

All in all a very glowing review with Jo Whiley chipping in to sing Will's praises. :D :D

If there's a listen again it's worth tuning in. Hope you can understand my ramblings!

It's interesting to listen to all 3 album reviews as he could be quite critical, so was more pleased he rated Echoes so highly. :D

Wow! thanks Gill...brilliant comments there. I must listen to that.

There is a listen again here..but Jo's show isn't up yet. :D I did tape it from Sky but it failed for some reason..so i would like to see if i could record from I player.

Will Young: Shows like The X Factor aren’t about music

By LEIGH HOLMWOOD, Deputy TV Editor

WILL Young has slammed talent shows as "too sensational" - and said they have NEVER been about music.

And Will, 32, who won the first Pop Idol in 2002, warned that the public were in danger of being hoodwinked by manipulative telly producers.

In a dig at shows like The X Factor and Britain's Got Talent, he said: "They're much more sensational now.

"But I don't think the shows were ever about the music.

"Programme-makers are only ever concerned with creating great TV shows. The danger now is that they could become something more cynical and manipulative that moves into the realm of hoodwinking the public."

Will was catapulted to fame when he beat Gareth Gates to win Pop Idol, which was judged by Simon Cowell, Pete Waterman, Neil Fox and Nikki Chapman.

The series went on to be copied around the world and spawned the current roster of Saturday night shows.

But Will, who is to mark a decade in the music business with a TV special on ITV1, told Radio Times that the show had been good for one thing - gay rights.

The singer, who came out after winning, said: "Pop Idol made people look at what their prejudices might be.

"So if they voted for this guy all along - they liked him, felt passionate about him, got caught up in the TV show - then suddenly, do they have to think, 'Oh, well I'm not gonna buy his music because he's gay?'.

He added: "That show, rather than me, was very important for gay rights. And sexual equality.

"I was like a conduit for it, but it was definitely within the protective bubble of that show."

Foxy has just said Will will be poping in for a quick chat just after 8am . They are going to record a longer 10 year retrospective look at Will's career after the show to aired at a later date.

Foxy saying everyone saying good things about the album. Will feels vindicated that people think it as good as he thought when he was working on it. Foxy laughed about Will being eccentric. Now playing Evergreen.

Fond memories but remembers telling Cowell & the crew he didn't like it when he first went to record it but has an afinity with it now.

Now talking about Jealousy. Foxy says you could tune into any radio station & hear this. Wil said he didn't deliberately set out to write a song with such a broad appeal but felt he'd found a new sound and had evolved.

Foxy playing Jealousy. Said it had a feel good factor & should be turned up loud. Foxy said Will is looking very manly on the cover, last time he saw him he was geting off his bike & undoing bicycle clips. Will laughed & said he'd been running & how he often runs to work since the marathon. Loved doing album shoots because he gets to look better than he does in real life.

Retrospective show to be recorded at 9am and broadcast in a couple of Sundays.

Will is going to be worn out as he'll be off to This Morning after this,

I've just read this thread for all of yesterday and realise how much info is available in here, very impressive, thanks everyone. Just can't keep up at the moment, but isn't that good, shows what good promo there is!

I heard Will on Magic too TT, I expected it to be recorded.

I'm off out this morning but the midweeks are going to have me nervous!

Thanks TT - I listened in to that this morning. Looking forward to the 10year retrospective. Foxy said sometime in the future.

Thanks Bev - all have a different take on his comments. I agree with him that it's become very cynical and some of them have skewed his comments to make it seem he is referring to all talent shows and that's not the case. All he's said is that shows like BGT and XFactor have become cynical and manipulative. But then Cowell was manipulating on Pop Idol wasn't he. Only what tons of people think and why people do tune in to watch by the millions just to see the truly awful auditions and probably most of them don't even bother with the live shows once the final contestants are chosen.

I dare say he knows how his comments are going to be reported but he's entitled to his opinion - just like everyone else.

Amazing isn't it - RT has gone with a totally different headline whilst others have used his other comments to have a dig

They just love to twist his words.

On This Morning at 10.50am so not long too wait. I do hope he's performing.

Will is going to be worn out as he'll be off to This Morning after this,

Thanks Gill  much appreciated by one of the sleepy heads, who wasnt up in time to listen :o but have it recorded, thank heavens for Sky+

lovely to hear theres a 10 year interview coming up :w00t:

Thanks for the papers stuff Bev, although i think they have put it out on an agressive note, i think Wills opinion is valid, at the very least since autotune gate  I for one used to watch all the singing talent comps, but not anymore i feel duped, i did really enjoy them and to me it was about all the new fresh faces singing live on a Saturday night, no more. and it is now all becoming a bit of a joke, there are hardly any decent sellers from the shows, and many have been cast out by Simon and not nurtured and left without any new material to stagnate into the background, and it seems Simon couldnt care less, as long as there is money in his coffers thats all that matters

its sad really. he really believes in Leona, but she isnt doing so well as her first album sales, and for Simon to steal a song is way below the belt, dispicable even i for one am appauled

I havent read the whole Radio Times review.
