THIS MONTH WE'RE LOVING...

WILL YOUNG

WITH THE LAUNCH OF A GREATEST HITS ALBUM, THE POP IDOL TURNED POP STAR LOOKS BACK ON AN AMAZING CAREER

Way back in 2002 were you Team Will or Gareth? Company loved both Pop Idols, but Will is the one who has gone on to sell eight million CDs and have 3 number-one hits. Plus, who can forget his shocked expressions when Ant and Dec announced he’d beaten the favourite, spiky-haired Gates?

Since then, he’s appeared on Question Time (getting the show record ratings), sung with Burt Bacharach and Elton John, and starred in Hollywood film Mrs Henderson Presents. Not to mention winning Rear of the Year, Most Stylish Male Music Star, Best Bod, Sexiest Star, Best Dressed and Best Hair awards.

Now, having just flown out to Morocco to help Cheryl Cole pick her finalists for this year’s The X Factor, he tells us how it feels to be on the other side of the judges’ table…

We can’t believe it’s been seven years since Pop Idol! How does it feel to be bringing out a greatest hits album?

It’s great, because I haven’t had to do that much work on it! I’ve sat back, made a video for my new single, Hopes and Fears, and that’s it. My stress levels are quite low at the moment, so I’m enjoying that too. It’s been a celebration for me-to have a whole album of hit singles is weird but very cool.

Is it odd listening to Evergreen now?

Evergreen was the culmination of 20 weeks of hard work on a talent show, which I really enjoyed. So I love hearing that song. It has so many memories. It really was a life-changing moment. Pop Idol gave me a career and I’m really proud of what I did on the show.

We’ve just seen you on The X Factor…

Yes, I went out to Morocco to help Cheryl in this year’s boot camp, which was brilliant. I love The X Factor. In fact, I love all those talent shows. They make great Saturday-night entertainment and are quite addictive, too!

What’s been your career highlight?

Singing with James Brown-we sang together three times. The first was on The Mall at the Olympic-torch ceremony, and he was just fantastic. He’s completely professional and generous to the crowd. The next time we sang together, he told me off for not dressing smartly enough.

And you’re an actor now, too, after starring in Mrs Henderson Presents…

I always wanted to act when I was younger, so it was great to do. Making music, you’re in charge of the whole business, from writing the songs to funding yourself and selling it. With acting, I could turn up and just think about my performance.

Just how showbiz is your life then?

I’m not a very ‘starry’ person, but I do remember one moment I felt like a real celebrity. I’d been in Cuba making a music video, then I’d flown to LA for the premiere of Mrs Henderson Presents. I remember being in the pool at the Four Seasons Hotel, thinking, here I was, fresh from a music video and getting ready to go to my own Hollywood film premiere. But that feeling of being a star soon went away again!

Who would you like to work with?

It would never happen, but I think Bjork would be great to work with. She’s just incredible-and a really unbelievable singer and performer.

You recently bumped into Gareth Gates at V Festival. Do you think either of you could have predicted your successes?

It was great to see him! He’s such a sweet guy, and is doing really well. He’s in Phantom Of The Opera at the moment. At the time (during Pop Idol), we were so focused on the show, we couldn’t look further than the fina. But. I think we could have seen us now, we’d both be really happy with where we’ve ended up.

Will’s new album, The Hits is out on 16th November and he’s on tour now.

Nice bit of promo there. The bit I highlighted stood out for me. So many entering the business don't realise this nor do a lot of fans.

Guess he didn't talk to Gareth for long or he would have got the right musical.

Here's the actual article

Daily Star

15th October 2009

British rockers OASIS and COLDPLAY were the big winners at the U.K. Music Video Awards in London on Tuesday (13Oct09) with both bands scoring a clutch of trophies.

The Live Forever hitmakers, who split in August (09) after guitarist Noel Gallagher quit, landed two prizes - the Innovation Award for their hit album Dig Out Your Soul and Best Editing in A Video for Falling Down.

Coldplay were also honoured at the ceremony, which recognises excellence in music video production, walking away with Video of the Year for Strawberry Swing, which was also praised in the categories for Best Animation and Rock Video of the Year.

Other notable winners include Lady Gaga, who took home the Best International Video honour for Paparazzi, and British singer Will Young, who landed the Best Pop Video prize for Changes.

Thanks for the latest SWF and TT, I don't know what show GG's is in either, thanks for the Star snippet as well sunday, I'm still feeling chuffed that he's actually won for a change with "Changes", pity about LIG not getting one though. That's 5 or 6 of his vids now that have been nominated isn't it? LRN, ATL and WAI were also up for awards and wasn't Your Game as well?

Thanks TT

How honest

That was my first thought & I posted as much on Devoted. He really is a breath of fresh air in a very corrupt industry.

Wish I could transport myself back to Will's gig there last year. :)

Thanks TT. I'm sure we've seen that tall bloke before. I recall a piccy some time ago where Will is talking to a tall fella who had his back to the camera. He must almost 7'.

It's Peter Jones from Dragon's Den. Someone on the OS said he's 6' 7." He's so well built too. He makes Will look so little & slight.

Obviously not for the dance/pop album I would think, so, is he looking at album 7 or selling them to other artists.

Thanks Sunday. Wonder how recently they've been written.

The first track says he is the performer but not the others. I like thinking these could be contenders for album 7. I'm so greedy. :naughty:

Thanks sunday - great stuff -

I recall him recently saying about the collaboration with Greg Kurstin but that nothing came of the songs - they didn't "go with them".
