Thanks to Suggy for this:

In 2002 he surprised the music world for having won, with his soul voice, Pop Idol, the first talent show precursor of X Factor.

Ten years later, the British singer – now thirty-two – who in the meantime has recorded albums (5 in total) and done concerts, cinema and TV, sang duos with music greats such as James Brown, Brian May and Roger Taylor, won two Brit Awards and sold over eight million albums across the world, is a rare example, of how talent shows every now and again are able to discover true artists. The kind that last. Famous for songs that have become hits like the remake of the Doors “Light my fire” in the version of José Feliciano, part of the debut album “From now on”, he has recently released a new album, the first in three years: "Echoes" (Sony).

I saw a Tweet a couple of day ago thanking Will for his article in Gay Times. I bought it this morning and he has a 2-page spread. A lovely close up portrait shot - taking up 3/4 of the spread- looking to his right in a pensive mood - hands clasped together under his left ear.

Here's the text:

Will Young writes exclusively for GT400

"A lot has changed in 10 years". God, that phrase is a worrying one. I am 32, I look back on what it was to be gay in my 20s, I now think about upholstery issues and utter sentences like...."A lot has happened in 10 years".

Midlife (the 30s are midlife for a gay man) crises aside, I feel heartened when I look around at how the relationship between gay men and women and pop has progressed in recent years. When I won Pop Idol (there is another sentence that makes me cringe) and came out it was a huge deal at the time. Public figures in pop music didn't usually come out then, they hushed it up. Now the public doesn't even know if popstars are gay or not. From Bloc Party to The Feeling, from Jessie J to the contestants on the XFactor: is it that sexuality is finally taking a back seat in the formation of a popstar's identity?

Youth culture is far more open-minded about sexuality than it ever used to be. I notice now on shows such as Jamie Oliver's School, or BBC3's 'Brattish Kids Who Can't Live With their Parents' (I paraphrase)and dramas such as Skins there is always representation of young gay boys and girls. It is becoming normalised to the point that sexuality is just a background part of someone's story, and not necessarily something that even needs to be spoken about anymore.

This is the way it should be in my opinion. Look at the XFactor contestants this year. Now, my divining rod for 'gayness' is often wrong but at the risk of speaking out of turn it seems perhaps a few of the male contestants (and maybe the female too) are gay and I find that really encouraging.

We've hit the mainstream! Jessie J wins Best Newcomer at the Brits and four Mobos... People are unconcerned with who she chooses to sleep with and more concerned with what she represents and most importantly the quality of her music.

This being said I still see being gay as an important and exciting and informative part of who I am and how it seeps through into what I do creatively. The challenges it brings up to be gay making a music video or writing a song is sometimes more exciting. Perhaps if I came out now as opposed to 10 years ago it would have been more of a page 15 column rather than front page news. Either way where society is regarding its relationship with gay popstars is an encouraging reflection of where people are generally.

Onwards and upwards...

The original Pop Idol, 32, on staying the course, reality TV and yummy-mummy envy

Will Young on staying the course, reality TV and yummy-mummy envy

You won Pop Idol in 2002; how do you account for your longevity when many of your TV-show-winning peers have the career lifespan of mayflies?

You’ve got to have a bedrock of talent. You’ve got to work out what you want from it – an instant million-pound hit, or a long-term commitment. My manager Simon Fuller turned down loads of contracts for me when I first won the show because he was playing the long game from the start. It has to be about the music; if that’s not working for you, you’re doomed. As I’ve grown in confidence musically I’ve felt more able to experiment. The fact that my new album Echoes got to number one – well, I felt vindicated as well as super-chuffed. And I celebrated for two days straight.

Reality TV shows – force for good, or innately evil?

I watch them because they pull me in; they’re the new soap operas. I saw ten minutes of The X Factor the other night and I was instantly grabbed by all the familiar story arcs – I wept with the girl whose parents had died, I laughed at the guy who’s obviously deluded about his talent. I look back at Pop Idol and it seems innocent in comparison to today’s shows. But evil? I don’t think so.

Are you as nice as you seem?

I’m that classic combination – uber-sensitive but uber-tough. One thing I’ve learnt is which battles to take on and which ones to let go. It makes life so much easier. I don’t get angry very often, but when I do, everyone knows about it. Therapy’s helped me in that, as in everything else. I first saw a counsellor at university, just after I came out. I’ve had ongoing issues with depression – in a mild form, but I still hit that wall from time to time. It feels like running a cruise liner: I watch myself intently at all times, and I’m alert to the smallest changes on any of the decks.

How do you relax?

I go surfing. I have a house in Bodmin, Cornwall, and when I’m there I’m always in the water. I find the sea very calming. Anything that reminds you that you’re not that important is important itself, I think. We all get mixed up in our little worlds, especially in a profession like mine.

Do you like being famous?

I don’t think of myself in that way at all. I don’t know what to say if I meet famous people, and some I have met have been so horrible that I’ve never been able to listen to their music again. There’s not a huge amount of generosity in this business.

Are you ready to settle down?

I’m fully embracing my 30s. I’ve just moved house, I want to get a dog, I love watching Antiques Roadshow, this morning I fed my fish. And kids? Probably when I’m in my 40s. I like the idea of being less selfish – though I also like the idea of rocking up on the school run as the stylish gay dad as opposed to the yummy mummy.

You’ve just produced a film version of Coriolanus, starring Ralph Fiennes. Is this a new career path?

More of an enthusiasm. I wanted to invest in films because I was keen to do something interesting with my money. I didn’t know the play, but Ralph inspired me with his sexy, modern-dress vision of it. I had a small part as a newspaper reporter, which ended up on the cutting-room floor. Ralph was sweet – he took me for a drink and said, ‘It’s not working, we’ve got to lose you.’ I want to do more acting, though. I’ve got a couple of theatre things in the pipeline.

Any plans for the next ten years?

I always have plans. I’m a plan-aholic. I’m forever saying to my accountant, ‘What if it all goes wrong? What contingencies do we have in place?’ One thing I know for sure; whatever happens, I’ll stay front-of-house. Backroom stuff is all very well, but I still crave the attention. I’m completely kidding myself if I claim otherwise.

Will’s album Echoes is out now. He is currently on a nationwide tour – see willyoung.co.uk for dates

Another mention.

TV Gossip & Chat

Will Young will join Jessie J as a coach on BBC The Voice according to reports. Jessie J is currently the only confirmed coach for the singing show that will air in Spring next year. Who would you like to see join the panel?

Oh and a really crap report about it from the Sun that's now been picked up.

POP Idol winner Will Young is being lined up as a mentor and judge on new BBC1 talent show The Voice after Kylie Minogue pulled out.

Will is a candidate — along with will.i.am from The Black Eyed Peas and Tom Jones — to join chart star Jessie J on the judging panel next year.

Kylie priced herself out by asking for £2.5million — when the Beeb's highest offer was £1million.

An insider said: "Will is seen as a middling star who would fit around other people."

The Beeb hopes to have the panel finalised early next year with the show due to air in the spring.

Thanks Bev.

Wish they hurry up with an official announcement. Maybe it's this that makes Will unavailable for Bedlam.
