Single Of The Week - February 5, 2007

14. Findlay Brown – Come Home

‘Come Home’ is gentle, light and nice. Sounding like he’s sat in his room
singing to himself, Findlay Brown’s single is nothing special, like most of the other
singer song writers the scene is inundated with at the moment he’s trying too hard
to be different and sensitive and make you really connect with his emotions.
To be able to play music using an acoustic guitar and nothing else you need to have
an exceptional voice to give depth and a certain sincerity to the song, but Brown
just doesn’t have the voice to pull this off. ‘Come Home’ and B-side ‘Broken Every Rule’
are two songs that sadly don’t quite cut the mustard.

13. The Knife – Marble House

Swedish dance duo The Knife are to release both a new single and a special version
of their current album early next year.
'Marble House' is to be released as a single on February 19; watch the video here.
A deluxe version of Silent Shout will also be released in the new year.
The single version of 'Marble House' is different to the one found on
Silent Shout, one of DiS's albums of the year as voted for by our readers.
It's a duet with Jay Jay Johanson, and remixes by the likes of
Emperor Machine and TV On The Radio's Dave Sitek also feature.

12. Clinic – If You Could Read Your Mind

Clinic’s deepest, spookiest microgroove so far.  â€˜If You Could Read Your Mind’
is an awesome new single, the second to be taken from their wickedly
fine album ‘Visitations’, Recorded in High Dimensional Full Fidelity Stereophony.
After having their London show curtailed by the lascivious killjoy drones of
Central St Martins, the masked and mysterious gents frolic out in Manchester,
Glasgow, Brighton and Nottingham.   Played and loved by all around,
there are sessions for 6Music and Radio 2’s Mark Radcliffe coming up for
around the release. Hear it on your local specialist radio station.
All formats include brand new material not featured on the recent ‘Visitations’ album..

11. Mark Ronson – Toxic

There's something thrillingly perverse about producer du jour Mark Ronson's
decision not only to release a Motown-inspired cover of Britney Spears' Toxic
but to feature somebody called Dirt McGirt on vocals. Remember Britney
before the marriage, before her other problems, in her school uniform?
Now imagine her being leered at by Ol' Dirty bast*rd - for Dirt McGirt is he.
This track is being released on a limited 10" double-sided vinyl,
with a doubtless similarly warped version of Coldplay's God Put A Smile On Your Face
on the other side (but sadly not on the promo CD).
The single heralds Ronson's new album Version, due in April.
Says Mr Prolific himself: "I've taken these songs that I love and turned them
into Motown/Stax 70s versions... It's a great song and now I'm going to make it bounce."
In truth, bounce isn't quite the word. Like a collision of Christina Aguilera
in strumpet mode and Gorillaz in a black mood, this rather shimmies and
sashays in a dark corner while letching at the pretty things on the floor.

10. Frisco & Ice MC – Think About The Way

Frisco return after their club-smash 'The Summer is Magic' by sampling
the fabulous 'Think About The Way' - a top 40 hit for Ice MC in the 90's and
all put together by Euro-meister Roberto Zanetti (the man behind Corona).
Retaining the original Alexa vocals and Ice MC rap this has been brought
bang up to date for a 2007 release.

09. Duke Special – Freewheel

'Freewheel' is the second release from the Duke's acclaimed
'Adventures In Gramophone' album. On it the Duke demonstrates his way
with a heartfelt poetic lyric and a singalong chorus.
The sound is pretty much like that of Badly Drawn Boy's smarter,
slightly stranger brother. In a time where the world falls at the feet
of the likes of David Gray, it's most welcome to find there's someone
who deserves plaudits for being alternative to the alternative, i.e. good.
Pete Wilson could have made such a hash of the whole thing, but it's
altogether gorgeous. 'Something Might Happen', the second song is an
absolutely heart wrenching ballad with nothing but voice and piano.
Soundtrack to 'The Company Of Olympian Bird Gods' employs the Duke's
beloved gramophone, it's got a crackly 'birds of Britain type' feel,
interspersed with reverential chanting, thumping drums and vague
instrumentation. A suitably odd way for the lad to finish off this E.P.
The single is available for download all over the place, so you can go
listen for yourself. The special edition 78rpm 10-inch vinyl will include
bonus tracks, including 'Something Might Happen' recorded live at
Howard Jones' house.

08. Sadie Ama – Fallin'

2007 is set to be an exciting year for this young woman. Already hailed
as the brightest light by Music Week...
**#4 on the BBC Sound of 2007 Poll**
“With vocals so honeyed even the coldest heart will thaw…†I-D Magazine
“A stunning debut from the brightest light to hit the UK R&B scene
in far too long†(Music Week)
Despite the best efforts of her record company to keep their prize asset
secret while she develops, nineteen year old Sadie Ama
(real name Mercedes Louise Hall), is impossible to hold back.
Since the leak of the song Fallin' to radio, the growth of media interest
and radio support has been exponential and unprecedented.
It has caught everyone by surprise.  Why? Because the word is out -
Sadie is the one to watch in 2007.
Sadie’s 2007 debut “Fallin’†promises to wet the appetites of cool-pop
lovers and welcome a whole new audience whilst keeping happy her rapidly
growing female fan base - who have shown real empathy for Sadie’s sound
and her songs via her myspace page.  Sadie may only be nineteen but her
lyrical content and emotive voice touches people of all ages – she even
had messages sent to her saying her song had repaired a couple’s break up.
Working on a batch of surprises for her debut LP, producers in the mix
include Future Cut (Lily Allen), Johnny Douglass (Sugababes) and Murlyn
(Britney Spears and Jamelia) whilst maintaining a fruitful relationship
with those that spotted her first - DaVinChe and Terror Danjah.
Some of the world's finest writers are onboard, also stirred by Sadie’s
effortless power to touch people - led by prolific songwriter Diane Warren
and man of the moment Ne-yo (“So Sickâ€, Beyonce “Irreplaceableâ€,
Mario “I Don't Wanna Know†and Rihanna “Unfaithfulâ€).

07. Damien Rice – Rootless Tree

This latest release from the Irish troubadour, taken from his critically
acclaimed new album 9, is somewhat removed from his usual fare. Preceding his
already sold-out UK headline tour in March, this is certainly more suited to the
newly announced stadium dates in October.
The track starts off in a perky yet predictable way, with the only major
surprise kicking in with the chorus. The contrast between the verses
and the chorus is marked, with the first being more coffee house schmaltz
and the second being a little more towards the teenage angst end of the spectrum.
Generally, if you want to have "f*ck you" shouted at you, this isn't the sort
of artist you'd be listening to.
This will certainly bring Rice to the attention of a new audience, but anyone
buying the album solely on the back of this is likely to end up disappointed.
All in all, whilst this definitely shows he's more versatile than many people
credited him with being, if you want to be sworn at you're better off with Lady Sovereign.

06. Public Domain & Lucia Holm – I Feel Love

If like me you love it hard and banging, this is a serious contender for 2007.
Mark Sherry and the team are back taking a tech-trance sound to new levels with a clever
sample of the Donna Summer classic. Since ‘Operation Blade’ they have come a long way
but have always flown the flag for hard dance.

04. Long Blondes – Giddy Stratospheres

Signed to the legendary Rough Trade label, The Long Blondes are a quintet hailing
from Sheffield. Their debut album, "Someone To Drive You Home", was released last year
to much acclaim and they will spend February supporting The Kaiser Chiefs, as well as
headlining a tour in their own right.
It's not surprise that the 'Blondes have previously played with Franz Ferdinand,
as one listen to "Giddy Stratospheres" immediately groups them together due to a choppy
and infectious riff that makes you want to shake your booty. Kate's singing is commanding
and mixed with some cute backing vocals, produce a delightful ditty that you can't help but like.

03. 2Pac & Ashanti & T.I. – Pac's Life

"Pac's Life" is a posthumous single by Tupac Shakur from his album called
Pac's Life. Produced by L.T. Hutton, it includes guest appearances from R&B singer
Ashanti and rapper T.I. The second 2Pac verse was recycled from a song titled
"This Life I Lead". That song was released as part of the Better Dayz album in 2002.
In the United Kingdom, the single is currently in the #18 on the UK R&B Singles Chart,
with a release date set for 5 February 2007 according to BBC Radio 1 have also predicited
it to be a future number one hit.

01. Jessica Simpson – A Public Affair

This title track from Jessica's upcoming new album, and follow-up single to her hideous
cover of These Boots are Made for Walking, is dubbed by her PR people as a
"party anthem of a single". Which it was. In America. Last Summer.
The fact that they thought that a shameless sample/rip-off of Madonna's seminal '80s hit Holiday
is going to storm the UK charts in January leaves the mind reeling. As does the track itself,
which is so sugary you can almost feel your teeth rot whilst you listen to it.
She obviously has a reasonable voice, but this does nothing to show it off.
The performance is breathy and uninspiring, and the track itself seems to be nothing
more than bits of familiar hits bolted together, even down to a mid-way giggle that just
screams Mariah Carey.
With a video that's been viewed over half a million time on YouTube there's evidently a
market for this lady. Whether or not it's for her music is debatable. This is disposable
bubble-gum pop for tweenage US mall-rats at its worst.
