Posted October 27, 200618 yr Following on from dear old Jester's idea, I've decided to do my own Dance/Techno/EBM/Rave Top 30... Now, I've been a clubber and raver since the late 80s, so I'm kinda running the whole gamut here of stuff, so you're gonna see some old-skool, some 90s and some right up to date stuff as well. I tend to go to the underground EBM/Cyber clubs these days, so the more recent ones you aint gonna really know (mind you, for a lot of you, the Old Skool stuff's gonna be a bit new as well... ), but I reckon a few of my choices may surprise you.... Anyway, as someone once said, "Listen without prejudice". Enjoy.... So, we start off with NUMBER 30 - PWEI - Touched by the Hands of Cicciolina As far as I'm concerned this is one of the best marriages of Indie and Dance you will ever hear. This should have been the theme to 'Italia 90', but instead we got Keith Allen pratting about and John fukkin' Barnes' comedy 'rapping'. New Order did rather embarrass themselves IMO.... The cool Raver and Indie kids were all dancing to this one and vacating the floors when "World in Motion" reared its ugly head.... [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXyADEPkrA0.swf
October 27, 200618 yr Author NUMBER 29 - THE SHAMEN - MOVE ANY MOUNTAIN I really wanted to put "Boss Drum", but the sodding video for that on You Tube wouldn't open, so I had to go with my alternate choice (hence the lower ranking for The Shamen, "Boss Drum" would've elevated them higher...). "Move Any Mountain" is an alternate version of "Pro-Gen"; but frankly the differences are a trifle cosmetic. The vid for this one is a bit cooler. This would be the last thing that Will (the guy in the vid with the cool dreads..) would record before his untimely death... :( And no, I have absolutely no idea why on earth they are dressed like the Fremen from David Lynch's film adaption of "Dune".... Still, The Shamen did actually manage to pre-empt the whole "Cyber-Goth/Cyberdog" image about a decade or so early.... They should've patented the clothing, they'd've made a bloody fortune.... October 27, 200618 yr Author NUMBER 28 - LFO - LFO Caused a bit of storm this one did in the heady days of the "Acid House", illegal rave scene. Radio 1 DJ and arch tit Mike Reid went on record saying that he wanted the track banned from radio airplay because it somehow encouraged the use of drugs (hmmm, the fact that the tune has no lyrics as such, would make that surely difficult... ). But of course what Reid's rant actually achieved in the end was to ensure that absolutely LOADS of people actually went out and bought the thing....  A short time later, The Shamen would release a song with the mantra "Es are good, Es are good..." repeated over and over again, not a single Radio 1 DJ raised any word of objection as it bulleted straight to No 1...... Funny that innit...? [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch/v/o6rtL-mk64U.swf
October 27, 200618 yr I LOVED THE SHAMEN TRACK MOVE ANY MOUNTAIN,anyone know what they are up to these days?
October 28, 200618 yr Author NUMBER 27 - COMBICHRIST - GET YOUR BODY BEAT The first of my 'underground' EBM/Harsh Techno acts to feature here. A really brutal bunch of headfukkers they are too, think Prodigy in a head-on collision with Aphex Twin at his most nasty.... The lead singer, Andy LePeglua - the one with the cool-as-fukk mohawk clambering all over the fencing in the vid, also fronts another (bit softer, more Trancey) EBM act called Icon Of Coil.. IoC have no vids on YouTube however (well, apart from these naff 'Anime' things... <_< and I made a self-imposed rule not to embed any of those for this chart no matter how cool the track..). I have to confess, that this is not my fave CombiChrist track, but it's about the only one that has an official video and it is growing on me. They're beginning to get quite big, this appears to be from an upcoming Horror/Sci Fi film called "The Gene Generation"... So, get down with the harshness..... October 28, 200618 yr Author NUMBER 26 - APOPTYGMA BERZERK - UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD Now, these guys have gone through a fair few changes in style over their career... From Underground Industrial, to more poppy, Trancy EBM (of which this is an example..) to a sort of synth-pop Rock with Emo tendencies on their last album.... :o Anyway, enjoy a rather nice bit of Trancey EBM.... ^_^ [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch/v/-NlIjGGiqfo.swf Anyway, that's all for now. More later, I'll give you guys a chance to digest and comment.... :)
October 28, 200618 yr Author I LOVED THE SHAMEN TRACK MOVE ANY MOUNTAIN,anyone know what they are up to these days? No idea, I dont think they are a going concern anymore though. I'll try and find out for you... Hope you're enjoying the show so far.... :)
October 28, 200618 yr LOVED 'boss drum'... the lyrics appealed to old mushy in his 'spiritual' phase, the album was good too
October 28, 200618 yr Author LOVED 'boss drum'... the lyrics appealed to old mushy in his 'spiritual' phase, the album was good too Yeah, I really wanted to put "Boss Drum" on here, but I just couldn't get the sodding video to open, gutted really, one of my fave Shamen tracks... The thing they did with Terrence McKenna was brilliant too.... You enjoying the rundown so far...?
October 28, 200618 yr I really like the rundown so far. I (obviously) knew #30 - #28 as they were commercial hits, but I enjoyed the hardcore Techno of the #27 track, while when I played # 26 the Apoptygma Bezerk track I realised that I had heard it somewhere before (but I have no idea where) and I really like it. I look forward to the rest of the countdown.
October 28, 200618 yr Yeah, I really wanted to put "Boss Drum" on here, but I just couldn't get the sodding video to open, gutted really, one of my fave Shamen tracks... The thing they did with Terrence McKenna was brilliant too.... You enjoying the rundown so far...? yeah, but my net time is limited.... strangely enough its clares pet hate! lol, me being online... :(
October 29, 200618 yr Author Okay, we shall continue.... NUMBER 25 - LEFTFIELD - ORIGINAL This superb song from Leftfield's first album "Leftism" features 90s Indie Rock sex Goddess Toni Halliday from the excellent, underrated band Curve on vocals.. She went all blonde for this vid (usually sporting a suitably 'gothic' dyed black barnet for Curve..), but the blonde look really suited her. Leftfield are one of the forgotten bands of the 90s Dance scene, very unjustly IMO. "Leftism" was a superb slab of 90s Dance/Techno, easily one of the best Dance albums of the 90s... [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch/v/zTZVEpMX0p8.swf
October 29, 200618 yr Author NUMBER 24 - THE KLF - WHAT TIME IS LOVE? There is a fine line between genius and insanity... NEVER was this more evident than with Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty (The KLF/JAMMS/The Timelords/Justified Ancients of Mu Mu....). These guys were the original "Techno Terrorists", the nutters who burned a million quid, the nutters who after splitting up did a one-off, one-song totally insane "concert" in the year 2000 purely to proclaim "FUKK THE MILLENNIUM", the nutters who specifically wrote a book called "How to get a number one single" and then damn well went actually DID IT with "Doctorin' The Tardis"... , the nutters who went on the Brits with hardcore Thrash Metal band Extreme Noise Terror with a bruising Death Metal version of "3am Eternal" and ended their set with Bill Drummond taking out a replica machine gun and firing a full mag of blanks at the assembled media and music business bigwigs.... "CHRIST, what a shame it wasn't LIVE AMMO" screamed about three million Indie Kids, Ravers and Metallers at their TV screens..... The KLF - fukkin' INSANE GENIUS!!! :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: The 'Pure Trance' Mix [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch/v/wsrWW0FOXnA.swf The Single edit [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch/v/apjTA2p_Wf8.swf America - What Time Is Love [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch/v/IouCwc8loK0.swf
October 29, 200618 yr Author NUMBER 23 - UNDERWORLD - MOANER A pretty fukkin' bruising bit of pumping Techno this is, possibly one of Underworld's most extreme tunes. I love it!!! The insane, stream of consciousness, ad-libbed lyrics are probably the best thing about this song. Obviously "Born Slippy" is the more legendary track, but this one gets totally and very unfairly over-looked... The vid is brilliant, such a simple idea, but so effective.... [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch/v/HlvzBzLH65w.swf
October 29, 200618 yr Author NUMBER 22 - FRONT LINE ASSEMBLY - EPITAPH Okay, I'm perhaps heading off a little too far into "Industrial" territory here, but there is a reson for this - Front Line Assembly IS basically the reason why Delerium (and I'm sure you know who THEY are...) exist.. FLA/Delerium's main man Rhys Fulber basically does Delerium to fund the activities of Front Line Assembly and his solo work.... Delerium are the side project believe it or not (yeah, Delerium may be bigger than FLA, Delerium may shift more units, BUT, FLA is Fulber's first love...). "Epitaph" is a rather spiffy tune, you can easily dance to it.... [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch/v/uhMuGEzp3BA.swf
October 29, 200618 yr Author NUMBER 21 - THEATRE OF TRAGEDY - MACHINE (VNV NATION REMIX) Right, first I'll get this out of the way - Theatre of Tragedy are a Goth Metal band.... Don't run away though.. ToT, however have been quite well known to let underground Dance and EBM acts work their alchemy on their tunes, and for me, this is probably the most impressive result of this. A nice bit of Trancey EBM from the Gods of the EBM scene VNV Nation (who will themselves feature later in this count-down). The vid is rather interesting, I think someone actually 'adapted' the already existing video for the original version of "Machine" to fit it into the remix. Enjoy.... [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch/v/owy7EDnz9b8.swf
October 29, 200618 yr Author NUMBER 20 - DELERIUM - INCANTATION The first of Delerium's contributions to this chart. This is just gorgeous Pure Hard Trance. Nuff said really... [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch/v/DgRL4DLqKmY.swf
October 29, 200618 yr Author NUMBER 19 - SVEN VATH - L'ESPERANZA You can keep yer Sashs, yer Robert Miles', yer ATBs, cos THIS is the man, and he's been doing his thing for years before any of the big names you know today came on the scene..... Sven is the overlooked and totally unsung genius of the whole Hard House/Trance scene... He's taken some pretty wild detours over ther years, but this tune is rather bloody gorgeous.... [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch/v/DnhhiPallYo.swf
October 29, 200618 yr Author NUMBER 18 - PRIMAL SCREAM - HIGHER THAN THE SUN I seriously agonised over this one - this or "Loaded"...? But "Higher..." just edges it for several reasons - the trippy, dreamy vocals of Bobby Gillespie (he has rarely sounded better IMO..), the fact that Dr Alex Patterson of The Orb fame is involved in the production and mixing of the track, the dreamy, ambienty and trancy nature of the tune, and the fact that I felt that "Loaded" was maybe a slightly better fit for my upcoming "Grim's Top 50 Indie/Alternative Tunes of All Time".... [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch/v/arj2WOIvnTk.swf
October 29, 200618 yr The girl in Delerium's video looks quite like Michelle Marsh to me ^_^ I was only aware of the one Delerium song, of course Silence....and the several re-issues :(
