French rocker Hallyday to up sticks for Switzerland

 

PARIS (AFP) - After failing to become Belgian, veteran French rocker Johnny Hallyday confirmed he intends to move to Switzerland because he is "fed up" of paying French tax rates.

 

Hallyday, who made a failed bid to acquire Belgian nationality earlier this year, told French radio he now plans to spend at least six months of the year in more financially clement Swiss climes.

 

 

"I don't give a damn. Quite simply, I'm fed up, like a lot of French people, with being forced to pay all these taxes. That's it, I've made my choice," he told Europe 1 radio, confirming French media reports.

 

 

"But I love France and even if I live somewhere else I am still a French citizen, you mustn't forget that," he said.

 

 

The 62-year-old Gallic songster -- real name Jean-Philippe Smet -- was born to a Belgian father and in November last year lodged an application for Belgian nationality, although the demand has so far come to nothing.

 

The move was widely seen as a ploy to evade France's hefty fortune tax -- although Hallyday would not confirm it at the time.
