16 23 4 The Wanted Glad You Came 1644 10.71 33.83 26.94 Island Glad You Came is #16 already on Airplay! After reading an article on OA/OS a few days ago it's made me realise how the system does work and how artists are cheating it by still using the old method. It can work as long as the campaign is executed properly, which Notorious was untill they decided to leave the promo untill the physical release which was a massive mistake. This cost them their airplay as it looked like it was bombing down the charts, only to rise up again when the physical had been released. They were treating this as a post-album single which I presume is why they left the promo untill it'a "interest peak" which is when they think the most buzz around the single will be out there. They got it totally wrong as the buzz was there the week they released it digitally and went Top 10. The buzz died off after radios and music channels saw this dropping down the charts and had already labelled it as a flop before the promotion had even started. Acts like The Wanted and JLS are only using the old method because they know that their music will not make as much impact if they did OA/OS. At least The Sats have gave it a go and are following with the times. I'm not saying Notorious would have done much better if they didn't do OA/OS, the sales would have maybe been similar but it would have dropped anyway like all their other first singles. At least Notorious is still climbing..

Yes they've had good promotion. They've performed it on two prime-time TV shows (So You Think You Can Dance? and Graham Norton) as well as smaller shows on T4, CBBC, and Lorraine. What more can they do? Missing You was a completely different campaign so there's no point comparing it, and they were aiming for #1 with Missing You which was not realistically achievable with Notorious being on air/on sale and them planning the magority of the promo around the physical release - bad decisions.

Notorious (1st Single Discussion Thread) (Part 2)
#21? Wasn't expecting that  .. No, not really :) They guini-pigged this for on air/on sale. On air/on sale is not to blame, and they have had good promotion. The single is sub-par.

Notorious (1st Single Discussion Thread) (Part 2)
If i'm going to be honest, I don't think radios have a problem with it. It's the fact that they've done air on/on sale. When it started to bomb down the Top 40, the people who decided the playlists would have taken this into account. It's not fair as radios should know how records are going to be released, and it annoys me that acts like JLS and The Wanted are ovioding this, cheating by not using on air/on sale like the majority of artists in the industry do now. Radio 1 wouldn't have A-Listed it if they thought it was $h!t, so there is no problem with the quality or likeability (although everyone to their own). It's the perception that it flopped which has gave Notorious an early grave. Radios have killed this - they obviously don't "l-l-love this traccck" (pardon the pun)

Notorious (1st Single Discussion Thread) (Part 2)
In all fairness though, this isn't their best single and is no-where near their best standard of pop. I'm glad that the label chose this track so they could guini-pig it for on air/on sale. I love Notorious but it's not as good as their previous hits Ego, Up, Higher etc. The first single from any album is usually one of the weaker tracks on the album, so I expect great things from this album. They said in an interview that the album isn't going to be all based around the Notorious sound, although that will be one of the "many genres" on the album. I think All Fired Up is in the same vien as Notorious so I'm not exactly quite shore how that's going to pan out. Unless radio start picking this up (which I doubt because we're half-way through the campaign already now) it should spend it's last week in the Top 20 next week and then trail down the chart. Like Lee said, Radio 1 will probably drop it from their playlist next week too as it's coming to the end of it's Radio 1 life. As long as it sells over 150k then this will be a moderate success for them. On paper this should have been selling alot more, especially after 2 prime-time TV slots, but like I said, this isn't as good as some of their previous singles. Good yes, their best? No. 0.001% from #18 on iTunes by the way :)

Notorious (1st Single Discussion Thread) (Part 2)
0.003% away from overtaking the Black Eyed Peas. I'm a bit dissapointed that their 3 performances over the last 24-48hrs haven't done much for them. I thought It'd be Top 15 on iTunes at least by now. Hope it climbs next week though. I'm guessing it will have done around 17-19k this week, which could bring it up to 78k. It could potentially cross the 100k mark by Sunday 03rd July. I'm only expecting this to sell in the long run over 150k if radios keep shunting this. #36 is their worst peak on the Airplay chart isn't it? Also, #19 on the Almost Saturday chart, and #5 in the physicals. I think she forgot to sing that line as Vanessa normally takes it, but because Vanessas voice isn't in great condition lately Rochelle was going to cover it again. However that dosen't really explain why Rochelle was 'miming' to Vanessas part . The only other explanation could be that there was a mic fault as you can vaguely hear her coming back in for "do you recognise me?" line.

Notorious (1st Single Discussion Thread) (Part 2)
Mollie wasn't singing over the backing vocals in her intro and outro. I've heard the playback version and her vocals were identical to the ones at SYTYCD, Graham Norton, Friday Download etc. Her mouth movements didn't match intonation of the track. It was their best vocal performance because they were all in tune, regardless of Mollie miming. It was a good performance!
-
Notorious (1st Single Discussion Thread) (Part 2)
That was vocally their best performance yet. So glad Rochelle took some of Vanessas lines. Mollie miming (as usual) the intro and outro, but hey-ho, it wasn't that side-splittingly obvious. The EQ between her pre-recorded vocals and the live vocals were just the same so no harm done. They've stated in interviews that Notorious will not be 'sound' of the album, so I expect this to be a one-off. All Fired Up still sounds in that vien however from that small clip.

Notorious (1st Single Discussion Thread) (Part 2)
I know but it's swings and roundabouts unless they actually make an album where every track is brilliant which they have yet to achieve. The better tracks should be released as singles of course I agree with that, and some of their single choices have been a bit mis-guided, but I'm not going to the point of saying the singles they chose where the wrong singles because they weren't - they've got them all right as far as the material goes. But what I'm saying is if people have already purchased the singles (which are all the good ones), what's left on the album? The not-so-good ones, which people wont want to buy - and it's albums every artists needs to sell the most, not singles. We shouldn't assume that just because the album has had a massive hit that the album will sell because that's not the case. Look at Nicole Scherzinger for example, #1 with Don't Hold Your Breath, amazing song, sold around 350k, and for the album... not that much. That 59p of Notorious is split left right and centre, it will bring next to nothing in for the girls themselves. They need the right balance. The real problem is not the material itself though (the material still needs to be better though, I'm not denying that), it's the way it's being marketed and released off the back of poor decisions at the end of the day. The whole campaign has been used as a testing ground which I don't agree with. Notorious wont be the worst track. When I said they release the not-as-good tracks first (note, I didn't say the worst track) I meant sub-par. There will be better tracks on this album for sure, but they're better off saving them for the next single rather than have a 'good single' first then a 'bad single' to follow up.
-
Notorious (1st Single Discussion Thread) (Part 2)
Because if they release all the good stuff what's gonna be left on the album? Will people invest their hard earned cash on an album they may already have most of the singles from? They wont pay £10 for some half-arsed tracks which is why balance is important. If they were releasing singles for the fans then yeah, release the good stuff, but every artist needs to release something that everyone will like, not just releasing fan favourites.
-
Notorious (1st Single Discussion Thread) (Part 2)
Because there is no way they would have released it as a post-album single (and if it had of been it would not have charted well. You only have to look at it's poor chart run now to realise it). And what I mean by that is they'll release the not-as-good stuff first (to get it out the way with) then they can release the better stuff nearer the albums campaign and after it. It's what most artists do when they plan to release more than 1 pre-album single. And throw into the mix the lack of early-on promotion, and radio not really supporting this, this is what you get. It's been marketed wrong, and they've used it as a guini-pig if you will. They'll most certainly do OA/OS again for the next single, they just need to review their plan of attack. It's poor planning.

So they really are trying to keep this Top 40 for as long as possible aren't they? Don't blame them, they need it. Interested to hear it!
